Doubly Appropriate

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.” –John Stuart Mill

Not new or news.

Just Veteran’s Day AND OWS simply defined.

Thanks, Zero, my thoughts exactly.

Amen!!! That says it all.

I’m stealing your quote for my Facebook status.

Hooah!

UpNorth

I stole it for Facebook, too.

I used to have this above my desk. I ought to put it back up. I’ve always thought it to be absolute on point.

NHSparky

Stolen here as well.

I once used this quote as part of the “1SG Comments (Simulated)” part of the drill letter for my NG company. The remainder of the 1SG comments was something to the effect of, “And that’s why we must learn to beat down drunk college students and hippies in a loving and less-than-lethal manner.” The forthcoming drill was MACDIS-focused (military assistance for civilian disturbances, aka riot control for dummies). Ironic juxtaposition for comic effect, as it were.

Amusingly, I later discovered that a particular member of my company, lately having returned from fleeing to Canada to avoid not deploying (it’s complicated and stupid; google “Peter Jemley”), wrote a letter to the governor complaining about how inappropriate it was that I used this quote in this manner in an official communication. His complete inability to understand the intent gave me profound insight into what the hell was wrong inside his head.
