Gun kills Occupier in Burlington

| November 10, 2011

Believe it or not, Vermont has some of the most liberal guns laws in the country, and I mean “liberal” in the traditional sense. So when an occupier in Burlington gets shot to death, who is the next casualty? Gun owners. Burlington Free Press link;

Firearms are not allowed in City Hall Park. [Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss] said the shooting raises questions about the easy availability of firearms.

“We need to reflect on guns in Vermont,” he said.

Yeah, whoever shot the protester was already breaking the law by bringing a gun to the park, so what is the logic behind punishing every other gun owner in the State except the person who broke the law?

When I lived in Vermont, the saying went; “The nicest thing about Burlington is that it’s so close to Vermont”. Bernie Sanders, the communist Senator from Vermont, began his political career as mayor of Burlington.

Thanks to Adirondack Patriot for the link.

well thsi is going to end well.

Sgt K

AP is reporting that it was a veteran who shot himself…

CI Roller Dude

I’ was a cop in Calif for 32 years…Calif has some of the toughest gun laws in the country…and we still have the highet murder rate and more fire arm assaults than any other state.
Solution: Let “GOOD” citizens have guns and allow them to carry them with proper training. That’s the only way to cut crime.
As far as some hippie getting shot in Vermont, I don’t have enough info to decide…maybe somebody deserved it?

UpNorth

Sgt K, I read that too, but, for now, I’m considering the source. AP quoted another Occutard that the guy was a veteran. Either way, it appears to be a suicide.

Nicki

Yep, I read it was self inflicted as well.

PintoNag

MSN indicates it was self-inflicted.

Redacted1775

Any word on whether or not it was intentional? Or was he truely an “occutard”?

OWB

Of course an occutard has a definition of “veteran” at variance from ours.

DaveO

Suicide?

Suicide is excuse enough to drop the 2d Amendment?

I’d be willing to sell maps of Burlington, VT to criminals once it goes gun-free.

If he had jumped from a bridge, I suppose there would be a proposal to (you finish it.) And let’s give mayor whatshisname a break. All he wants to do is reflect on the gun laws, not repeal them. Reflection is nice. Who could be against that?

Redacted1775

Something tells me ridding the world of guns (which will never happen, BTW) people will go on committing murder the old caveman way, which is why it’s such a preposterous idea.

Well, this evening someone was shot at Occupy Oakland, definitely not self inflicted:

Adirondack Patriot

This is the same bullshit that the media pulled with Scott olsen.

Look at this report from MSN:

“A 35-year-old military veteran has died at a hospital after shooting himself Thursday in an Occupy Wall Street encampment in Vermont’s largest city, a spokesman said.”

What spokesman? Who? The media used the same unknown Occupy spokemen to warp the truth around Scott Olsen.

The problem is THE POLICE HAVE NOT DETERMINED THAT THIS WAS A SUICIDE. Look at the next sentence:

“The public was not believed to be at risk after the afternoon shooting at City Hall Park in Burlington, but the circumstances were still being investigated, said Burlington Police Deputy Chief Andi Higbee. Police would not confirm that the shooting was a suicide, but witnesses said the man shot himself.”

Which witnesses? The one’s who may be part of a coverup? Ones that may have been puffing on a bong when the death occurred?

The media is a joke. Such crap.

If this is the same park I am thinking of, it’s too bad. It was a nice place for a walk. I’m sure covering it in urine soaked hippies has done wonders for the landscape.

Not gun violence, but police crack down on UC Berzerkly occupy protesters after they decided to break an agreement not to camp out:

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Vermont one of the few (only?) states that allows concealed carry at age 18+ without having to get a permit?

Seems to me that Vermont is ordinarily a very safe place…hmm…could it be?

Athanaric

Saturday should be the last day for Occupy Portland, though they have an ill-conceived plan to move their protest into foreclosed houses, so they can get shot for trespassing.

Let’s see, drugs, booze, guns, lawlessness, what could possibly go wrong?

Flagwaver

If you make it criminal to carry a gun then only the criminals will carry guns.

Personally, we need to treat these squatters as what they are. Last time I checked, when someone was squatting on city land, they were asked to leave. If they didn’t leave, they were forced to leave.

It is amazing that the homeless cannot sleep in public parks, but these occutards with homes can.

UpNorth

“It is amazing that the homeless cannot sleep in public parks, but these occutards with homes can.” Yeah, sad but true.

Redacted1775

Eegads!!! A shooting? In Oakland?! SAY IT ISN’T SO!!!!

UpNorth

I know, Redacted, almost as shocking as a shooting in Detroit, or Chicago, right?

Adirondack Patriot

So, it turns out the deceased was a 35-year-old transient with a stolen handgun. He had consumed large amounts of alcohol prior to the shooting and threatened to shoot someone else prior to shooting himself.

As far as his “veteran” status, he did two weeks at boot camp before being kicked out.

So, all of the bullshit about “veteran” who was mentally ill, inadequate care by society, and the OWS narrative, it turns out this was a drunken criminal with a stolen gun who threatened someone.

Oh, and the police still haven’t ruled this a suicide officially and the third person from the tent hasn’t been located.

Gee, he blended in so well with the nice OWS people. Who would have guessed he was a problem?

Redacted1775

What’s interesting, albeit not surprising, is most of the “veterans” supporting occuturds have had their service records embellised. Done so by either themselves or the media.

Redacted1775

Embellished* Spellcheck FTW!

Born and raised in Vermont. I can tell you that you can indeed carry a concealed weapon without a permit. You just need to not be a felon, have a restraining order, etc..In other words, be an average person. By coincidence, the murder and crime rate in Vermont is one of the lowest in the country.

While it is true the city of Burlington has an ordinance prohibiting firearms in the park, the ordinance itself violates state law prohibiting municipalities from regulating the possession or carriage of firearms.

“24 V.S.A. § 2295. Authority O\of Municipal and County Governments to Regulate Firearms, Ammunition, Hunting, Fishing and Trapping

Except as otherwise provided by law, no town, city or incorporated village, by ordinance, resolution or other enactment, shall directly regulate hunting, fishing and trapping or the possession, ownership, transportation, transfer, sale, purchase, carrying, licensing or registration of traps, firearms, ammunition or components of firearms or ammunition. This section shall not limit the powers conferred upon a town, city or incorporated village under section 2291(8) of this title. The provisions of this section shall supersede any inconsistent provisions of a municipal charter.”
