Sheriff Chuck Wright: Don’t get Mace. Get a gun.
At about the same time today, Old Trooper and Mr Wolf sent us the same link to an article about the Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright discussing a recent attempted rape in his county by a repeat offender. WYFF Channel 4 reports that the sheriff took the opportunity to lecture the press on the benefits of concealed carry weapons;
Wright said, “It’s too bad someone with a concealed weapons permit didn’t walk by. That would fix it.” He said people are tired of doing the right thing and criminals getting away with their actions.
He said several times, “I want you to get a concealed weapons permit.”
Wright said, “I’m tired of looking at victims saying, ‘There’s life after this’ … I’m tired of saying, ‘We’re sorry, we can’t keep them in jail.'”
Wright said in his view gun control is, “How fast can you can get the barrel of your gun back on the target?”
According to the report, Wright mentioned several times that his listeners should get guns and a CCW license.
“I want you to get a concealed weapons permit. Don’t get Mace. Get a firearm.”
Compare that to the blather coming out of New York, California and Illinois.

This. Many times this. The sherriff is completely right. I have had this same conversation with female friends many times. I would add a few points though:
Don’t get a little gun just to “scare” the bad guy. He doesn’t want to scare you. He wants to rape and kill you. Keep that in mind while gun shopping.
The day you buy your gun, also buy at least 100 rounds of ammo. Use it up at the range that day.
The gun does you no good sitting at home in a safe. The first rule of carrying a gun is to actually carry it.
“At about the same time today, Old Trooper and Mr Wolf sent us the same link to an article ”
Great minds and all that 🙂
Just completed my CHL here in TX mailed everything off this morning. Hopefully in 2 weeks my license will come in the mail.
Practice. Practice. Practice. I’m a S/W .38 guy–old school. The chances of my coming across a bad guy with greater firepower are good. The chances of my coming across a bad guy with greater firepower who is more able with his piece than I am with mine are not good at all.
What is it they say? “Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.”
If the Sheriff was to run for president I would vote for him. Our laws, Jails and Justice system are too easy on criminals. Lets go back to old school public hangings and the right to openly carry a firearm without a permit.
Like everyone so far has said, buy a firearm, buy Ammo, shoot up all the ammo, buy more. Become as proficient with your firearm as you are with your cell phone. When you practice, use human facsimile targets, bulls-eyes won’t rape and kill you, a human will. Double tap, two rounds center mass, then two more. Until you can do it every time you try.
What can I say? Gun control is so…….
Aw damnit what is the word I am looking for here?
unamerican.
You tend to notice that one does not find incredibly high violent crime rates in places that have large numbers of CCWs. JUST saying.
average Police response time: 15 mins
Average time of citizen response with a CCW: Immediately.
I agree with you all, however, as one of our local Sheriffs Scott Berry says. “Just having a gun doesn’t make you armed. “. You have to practice, of course, but most importantly, you MUST have the mindset that you are prepared to take a human life if you absolutely have to.
I could give my wife a firearm, train her until she shoots like Annie Oakly, and force her to carry it at all times,,, and she still wouldn’t be armed because she cannot envision herself in a situation where she would ever shoot another person. At least she would USE pepper spray.
Finally a LEO who at least has the balls to admit that 911 is nothing more than government-sponsored Dial-A-Prayer.
I’m proud to say Sheriff Wright is MY Sheriff and my grandson has been one of his deputies for several years now. Sheriff Wright stated that a .45 was about the right size to carry. I’ll definitely vote for him again.
Another grandson and I passed by that park about 2:00 p.m. Sunday on the way to visit my mother in a nursing home in another town.
Well, Joseph Brown, I hope you’ll let the man know that many, many people outside of his jurisdiction admire his solid and sane advice to those he serves.
Well, the recidivist maggots have a very hard time continuing doing the crime when they’re properly ventilated.
My wife knows how to shoot and is better with a pistol than some of my Vet buddies are. She still isn’t sure on which pistol she wants, she likes shooting mine, but the problem is she needs something a little more compact for carry purposes, even though I carry mine with no problem in my shoulder rig.
way to go chuck…proud of you!!!
Sheriff Wright is going to take a lot of flak from bleeding heart liberals on this one. I’m a “bleeding heart liberal” and I agree with him completely. Our courts spend so much time and money on drug users who only hurt themselves that the animals slip through, time and time again. Sex related crimes have the highest recidivism rate of all crimes and are treated like a child shoplifting candy. I saw one case where a man that raped a nine year old got nine months. Really, nine months? For raping a nine year old? That’s insane. Get a gun, learn to use it and be prepared to kill in defense of your life or other lives. End of story>
As I understand it, a can of wasp/hornet spray is much more effective than mace! My personal choice of protection is of course, a gun!
@17: I heard a speaker, yesterday, say similar things about recidivist maggots. The court system gives them a slap on the wrist and a pat on the butt and sends them out the door.
Well, Vic, you don’t need hornet spray. Just a good bottle of spray perfume or hair spray is equally effective. And for added effect, a BIC lighter in the line of the aerosol makes a great blowtorch.
