Old Trooper sends us a link to Fishbowl LA which is about the Marines taking to Reddit to show their support for Scott Olsen. Apparently, the picture above is from that media assault. I understand that, really, I do. My first reaction when I got the partial story was the same thing. Then I started doing my little “Google-foo” thing and started reading about how the thing happened and that Olsen was a member of IVAW and Veterans For Peace – big warning signals.
But the clincher for me….because if you read my first about him, you’ll notice I wasn’t my usual asshole self. I gave him unquestioned credit for his service and two tours in Iraq…But, then this morning I read what he thought of his “brothers”;
Maybe the brainwashing didn’t work on us.
Loosely translated, that means the rest of you who are proud of your service and proud of the heritage and history of the Corps are brainwashed…you fell for the bullshit. That’s the guy you want to defend? Really?
Both times I’ve written about him, I’ve been sympathetic about his injuries, even though he should have been following the instructions of the police…like anyone with half-of-a-brain would do – the police didn’t injure the whole Marine Corps…they injured one hippie fuckstick who has professed his hatred for the Marines.
No self-respecting Marine would join IVAW, whose most famous Marine was Rick Duncan/Strandlof the phony gay Captain from Colorado, or VFP whose chief fund raiser is Doug Zachary, a Marine who was jettisoned from the Marine Corps for dealing drugs and being a general nuisance before he could be deployed to Vietnam.
Seriously, do you want to peg your service to Olsen’s? Especially since most of Olsen’s posts on his website make it sound as if he was chaptered out/ for some sort of malfeasance.

If online reaction is any indication, it’s not a stretch to think Olsen’s injury could be the start of something very big. We have a lot of military combat veterans in this country who haven’t been treated very well since they left the service. No job prospects. Inadequate medical coverage. If they take their anger offline and into the streets, the OWS movement will become an extremely potent, and WELL TRAINED force.
To be concise if not tactful: fuck Scott Olsen. Having been a Marine doesn’t give you political carte blanche and it certainly doesn’t give you the right to pretend to speak for me. When you turn on your service and your brothers, you run around like a hooligan with organizations run by anti-U.S. Marxists and you spit on the values of the organization you use as tool to build popular sympathy in the media you can go get bent.
When the police tell you to leave an area and they start racking rounds into their firearms, you better leave.
Anything that happens after that is on you, not the police.
Who diagnosed his skull fracture? An OWS surgeon? Teh guy appears fine only 24-hours later. I call BS.

AP; where did you hear that he’s doing fine? The last I saw his condition went from critical to fair.
The thing that gets me is the allegation that the Po-Po did this with some sort of projectile, presumably a tear gas canister, being trotted out as undeniable fact. But I’ve also read reports that the protesters were flinging bottles and rocks. Color me unconvinced this was a police projectile due to lack of evidence. It could have just as easily been a friendly-fire incident, especially given my presupposition that most of these hippies throw like girls and, ergo sum, aren’t very good at hitting their intended targets. Add to that, it appears to me from the video that Olsen was out in front (got to at least give him credit for that) and was likely caught in a crossfire.
The dude is doing better and overall his name is pretty much shit with the younger generation of veterans. 902 I don’t think he is the start of anything other than maybe us policing ourselves a little better so don’t wear you uniforms to protests for a while.
re his supporter: I am not an expert, but rarely have I seen former marines get face piercings and whatnot. Generally, being “brainwashed” and all, the respecting how you look and what you present to the public doesn’t disappear after the discharge.

Old Trooper, I heard it on news radio that said he was released. I don’t see anything online that says he was released. I may have been premature. He may have been released from ICU or Trauma Care.
As far as who diagnosed his injuries, I’m still questioning the nature of his injuries. The Guardian reports that a hospital spokesman said Olsen was critically ill, but there is no attribution to anyone in authority claiming a skull fracture.
Still looking, but I question what the OWS protestor claim happened. They are capable of mimicking the Green Helmet techniques of Hamas and Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel.

.03, by the tone of your question, I guess you have undeniable proof that Olsen stopped a “projectile” with his head, and not a bottle, or rock, or ball bearing fired from a slingshot?
And, take a look at the video, and tell me where the cop was that fired a projectile, and point out where exactly in the video he was hit. I’ve watched it a lot, full screen and the smaller image, and I still have yet to see him get hit with a police-fired “projectile”.

When I was young (read very young)… FTA was prevalent. Once my company fired bangalores into the ground… spelling FTA at the Demo Range at Benning. It was one of 19 reasons we were BANNED FOREVER!
Freedom expression is a RIGHT of this wonderful country. It works both ways. Please don’t try to express this “freedom” (Marine Hating) at this year’s Madi Gras in New Orleans! If so… I’ll make sure “we” will express our “expression” upon your “expressions of freedom.” By the way… I’m not part of “The Few, the Proud, the Marines”… just a regular guy!

Usually guys that end up like that are the ones who are raised to believe they are unique and special, and the world owes them something. They enlist, are brought back to reality and shown that no one owes them a damn thing. They’re typically the ones who honestly believe everyone around them is retarded and they are the smartest people on the planet, without ever actually doing some self analysis; and maybe drawing the conclusion that THEY might be the problem. The Marine Corps definetly isn’t all wine and roses. I don’t think we ever suggested it was. There’s good times and bad times. Take them as they come and make the best of it. If in the end you feel it isn’t something you can do as a career, by all means, get out. But get everything you can from the institution, because they will for damn sure get everything they can out of you.
Redacted, I had the misfortune of dealing with a LOT of kids like that. According to them, they were incredible geniuses and if they could only get five minutes of the CO’s time, everyone else would see it. Thankfully, most of them ended up getting booted.

When I was a young Marine PFC, my Sergeant Major explained to me the rules of the road for liberty.
If ANY sort of violence appeared to be in the offing–say, if a couple guys started talking smack at a club and it was not obviously in jest–I was to leave immediately. If I hung around to “watch the excitement” or “help calm things down,” and things went to hell, I was going to end up losing a stripe, some money, and be confined to quarters for a while.
I took that advice to heart. I set a record for getting out of the Oasis Club at MCAS Tustin, just ahead of the first punch of the Great Bullwinkle Barroom Brawl of 1985. I became known as the canary in the coal mine–if I suddenly suggested that maybe that club down the street had a better band, everyone in my posse knew it was time to go.

I’ve seen more than one troop that could pass every single inspection, but could not for the life of him (and a few hers) pull his head out of his 4th point of contact. These were medics mind you. I’m not even talking about infantry land.
I don’t know how long this cat served. But I’m guessing that he never made it past E-3, which is saying a lot. Hell I’ve known Guys that got out as CPLs in the MC and were only mildly squared away. It’s really not rocket science. Staff Sergeant and above maybe but not fucking Corporal!

We are a brother hood yes. But we have assholes in our ranks too. Just as does any group or organization. This shitbird went into the harm’s way trying to be political and got hurt. When one does stupid shit in dangerous situations, and gets screwed up, that person deserves what happens to them. Bet he didn’t think it would happen either. As he is a member of VFP and IVAW, both of which harbor mostly malcontent ten percenters who could not hack it in service, I have no respect at all for him.
