Ditz: carrying weapon does more harm than good

| September 28, 2011

This ditz, Cary Carr, tells the story of how a man was shot by a 15-year-old thief, the victim, licensed to carry a concealed weapon, drew his own gun and shot the fleeing teen in the back and somehwo this doesn’t make her feel any safer. I guess that the fact that a 15-year-old running around her streets with a gun did make her feel safe?

This incident led me to wonder how many more students make the decision to carry weapons and not just guns. What’s really going to stop someone from bringing their weapon on campus? After all, aren’t these students carrying in order to feel protected when walking from classes or activities to their off-campus residencies? That doesn’t make me feel protected.

Dr. Jennifer Wood, associate professor in the department of criminal justice, said that guns only add to the problem and that the answer to safety may lie in Temple’s environmental approach.

“[Carrying guns] is obviously not a solution at all,” Wood said. “If anything it contributes to a climate of fear.”

Well, if the victim used his gun, apparently he didn’t feel safe on campus with good reason. And asking a professor about gun control is like asking a pig about the importance of hygiene. “Doctor” Jennifer Wood would have us all throw open our doors and allow the criminals to take whatever they want…well, except for Dr. Wood’s stuff.

If the criminals are carrying guns, obviously, the law abiding public needs to be similarly armed and trained.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe improving our relationships with community members won’t solve anything. But I would rather try all my alternatives and put a little faith in my neighborhood before I resort to carrying a lethal weapon. Knowing I possessed the ability to hurt or even kill another individual wouldn’t make me feel any safer.

Yeah, a liberal is just a conservative who hasn’t been mugged yet.

Thanks to ROS for the link.

This is so much “Can’t we all just get along” bullshit.
As for that alleged professor, I wouldn’t take a class from her if she paid me. What real life experience does she have in criminal justice, did she sit her over-educated ass in a court room one day?
I guess that “improving our relationships with community members” is code for give them what they want, so we don’t hurt their feelings?

I lived in Fairbanks, AK for three years. Not once did I feel unsafe because you can carry concealed if you have the right to purchase. Just because it was Alaska and pretty much secluded from the rest of the world doesn’t mean there weren’t idiots attempting a crime…they just knew anybody could be carrying to defend themselves.

Sounds like the college newspaper editorial at Flat State U back when Flat State first considered concealed carry. “But then no one will know who is carrying a gun?!?!” Last I saw, most criminal types don’t bother getting their CCHL before mugging/raping/murdering someone, even after going to the community outreach programs.

I prefer the signs I saw at a university in Texas: “No non-Permitted weapons allowed on campus.” If you have one, you can carry. If not, don’t.

Trust in the neighborhood? how about trust that the individual citizen can properly discharge a firearm in a reasonable manner for a good reason?

Old Trooper

Hey dr. dipshit; you don’t have the right to “feel safe”. Why is it that for the leftists/progressives it’s all about how they “feel”? Maybe if we all lived in gated communities like you probably do, dr., then you would have a point. Why does someone need a gated community to begin with, if your neighbors are so good and there’s no threats from society in general?

The good doc is from tu, naturally. I’ll be so relieved when Austin builds a wall around itself.

UpNorth made a good point: I’d be interested to know what her real-life experience with criminals is. She sounds like a doctor that wants to outlaw vaccines!

Miss Ladybug

ROS, this Temple University is in Philly, not Austin. That, and Austin is full of Libs, too, unfortunately…

>. But I would rather try all my alternatives and put a little faith in my neighborhood

Really? Does this mean this idiot doesn’t lock her doors at night as a precaution, because she has “faith in her neighborhood.” How about her car?

These kind of people do not get that there is true evil in the world. I hope to God they are never faced with it, because talking to evil is like trying to reason with a shark.

News Flash: My being armed has nothing to do with how you feel about yourself, Csry. Or even about how you feel about me, much less your neighborhood! How you feel about my protecting myself is quite irrelevant. I simply WILL protect myself by whatever means is expedient at the moment I need to protect myself. You know, because I have that pesky little gene which kicks in – that survival gene.

No one is suggesting that you should carry a weapon of any sort. No one is demanding that anyone who doesn’t want to be armed must be armed, in spite of the evidence which suggests that an armed by mandate society is much safer than an unarmed by mandate society is.

PintoNag

OWB, I wish I’d said that. All of it.

70+ comments posted in response to Ms. Sheeple’s brainless editorial. I’d say 90+% in favor of the 2nd Amendment, CCW and the God given right to defend oneself against deadly force.

Here’s my favorite of all of them: “Cary Carr looks like she would be good for removing the swelling from my penis, not much else.”

That’s so full of WIN, in my book.

Except for Security, and one very attention-to-detail former Marine professor, nobody around my school knew I was packing my 9mm. It made me feel safer knowing that in case of an emergency, such as that of Virginia Tech, I would be able to defend myself.

These people always say that guns are not the answer. Well, they just are not paying attention to the proper questions. The VT shooter walked around the school building shooting people at random in classes. If just one was carrying and knew what they could do, it would have cut the body count in half or more.

I don’t carry because a gun makes me feel safer. Just the opposite, I know it is a massive responsibility and I cannot truly relax my guard while it is holstered on my person. I carry it because I took an oath to defend the Constitution and people and I was never discharged of that oath.

Sure, I may no longer wear the uniform. Sure, I may have a piece of paper saying I had honorable service and got out. But, I was sworn into that oath by an officer and no officer came along and discharged me of that oath.

Does that make sense?

ROS

Thanks, Miss Bug. I’ve got to get out of this “tu=Texas” mentality. Ugh.

Of course that makes sense, but the “Carys” of the world aren’t interested in sense.

They focus on their own weaknesses, and what they perceive, in their twisted view of human nature and our culture, the ridiculous concept that good people do not have the right to defend themselves. They truly believe that it’s better to be hurt/killed/raped/robbed (you get the picture) than to stand up and stop the POS that is committing a crime against them or someone else. IOW, the POS deserves more respect and tolerance than good, decent people.

Like you, I reject that premise, and truly believe and adhere to the concept that there are people in this world who just, flat out, deserve to be shot in the face (paraphrasing Clint Smith). Like you, I believe that I have a moral (if not legal) obligation to protect myself, those I love, and innocent strangers from predators and to confront evil no matter what form it takes.

Final observation, you’re doing it right. It normally takes another sheepdog (or a career wolf) to “make” someone carrying, even if they are using gear that is not suited for CCW (the “Carys” of the world wouldn’t notice if you had an M4 carbine under your coat). But when using a quality holster, mag carrier(s) and belt designed for CCW, and a properly fitting cover garment, it becomes a lot more difficult for even a sheepdog or wolf to make the CCW practitioner.

The only thing I can disagree with the author on is this…

He says that citizens should be equally equipped and trained with the criminals…

I say we should be BETTER trained. Take a shooting course, stop watching movies and thinking that turning the gun sideways is correct…

Other than that….GREAT rebuttal to this whack-job lib…

Austin is the home of Texas hippie. Just had to put that out there considering Austin was mentioned
