War still rages in part of Iraq

| September 15, 2011

AP’s Rebecca Santana writes at the Stars & Stripes tells the story this morning of COS Garry Owen which straddles smuggling routes near the Iran border between the Iran government and insurgents;

Elsewhere in Iraq the tanks are being packed up, but here they still serve in the hunt for insurgents. And when U.S. troops hand out soccer balls to village children, Apache helicopters circle above.

[…]

At Contingency Operating Station Garry Owen, the last American military base in the southern province of Maysan, Maj. Steven Gventer spells out their doctrine: “You don’t want to be soft and chewy. You want to be hard and prickly. And we are hard and prickly at Garry Owen. … focused on getting out and aggressively trying to target bad guys.”

Garry Owen, named after the fabled U.S. Cavalry song, sits in treacherous territory next to Iran, near weapons’ smuggling routes, in a province whose governor views them as “occupiers.”

But, ya know, the war is over, so let’s rush the Hell out. How long before we’re back…again…and fighting Iranians?

Let them figure out their own problems. We tried since 2003 to get them right and spent trillions of dollars and countless lives. How much more blood, money, and resources do we have to shed for the Iraqi’s to take charge of their own country?

Didn’t Custer say the same thing to Keogh? ‘Let’s go get prickly!’

Brian is right Lilyea needs to listen to people who actually served over there and not spew out his right wing talking points that he is directed to put out by his handlers

Frankly Opinionated

Obumbler girl has surfaced. Was she hiding in embarrassment because sphincter said he was going to put some bimbo in bed when he got to Minnesota? Was she embarrassed because her ?bf? was too pussy to show? She is still as disconnected as ever with the post above.

@#4: Hmm, listen to people that actually served over there.

Well, let me throw in my 5 cents worth. I have served over there, 3 tours to be exact (’04-’05,’06-’07 and ’09-’10)and I totally agree with his comments. We either do it right or we will be back over there again and all the work we did this time around will be for nothing.

We should absolutely take into account the assessments of those who served in theater. That said, there isn’t a uniform opinion amongst this group [I was ’07-’08] about the purpose and method of invading, nor the viability of keeping forces there….SOFA notwithstanding.

There’s a lot of context to consider when formalizing ‘doing it right’.
