“Rock” Harris fesses up

| July 17, 2011

Jeff “Rock” Harris who we wrote about here, here, here and here finally admits to the Army Times that he wasn’t in the Ranger Regiment or in Somalia.

“Obviously, I did some things in the military, but it was nothing like what was in the article, it was my lie, and I don’t even have an explanation,” Harris said. “All I can do is apologize.”

Harris said he had served in the Army from 1987 to 1996 or 1997, when he was honorably discharged as a sergeant, and that he took part in the Persian Gulf War. He refused to elaborate. Army Times has made an inquiry with the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, but was unable to immediately confirm Harris’ claims.

Yeah, get in line Army Times, there are a bunch of people who have requested his records.

[Kinston Free Press reporter Jane] Moon told Army Times that she had trusted Harris. Only since has she learned how widespread stolen valor cases have become.

“From now on, I’m not going to take anything at face value,” Moon said.

Been living under a rock, Jane? Just google “stolen valor” and look at the thousands of incidents in recent years.

Angry people have been lashing Harris directly. He said he has “received a huge amount of hate mail” and that his employer, a local alarm company, has been receiving calls.

“It’s my own fault, and I’m not criticizing anybody for it, I understand, and I’d rather just put my apology out there,” he said. “Who has an explanation for lying like that? I don’t and I just apologize more than I can say, and the retraction’s coming.”

Harris also said that his “faith” made him apologize. His faith should have prevented him from lying in the first place. Where’s the statement from his buddy whose life he saved – James Murphy who said he wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for Harris? It seems he’s equally culpable in this farce.

Frankly Opinionated

“Where’s the statement from his buddy whose life he saved – James Murphy who said he wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for Harris?”
Perhaps his public apology should be a Q&A, and he could be asked that. I would wager that even in a public apology format that he still stretches the truth, or tries to lay blame elsewhere.
Extreme public humiliation is about all we can hope to get from this, and would go far to make things right.
Kinston NC could even benefit from this escapade by having an annual “Jeff Rock Harris” Tell a BIG ONE day.

I asked the same question. Is there really a James Murphy, or are his “comments” secondhand bullshit from Harris?

Scott

Ah, the “come to Jesus” faker. Gotta appreciate the classics.

ROS

I’ve been informed that the Murphy guy is also fictitious, as Mr. Harris produced a letter with “his” quote on it. The reporter never actually spoke with this person.

Doc Bailey

He was a fake? WHO COULD HAVE GUESSED? I would the reporter would have thought to take every interview with a grain of salt

Ummmm… The Special Operations community, which I’ve never in any way, shape or form been a member of, is a small place… Boggles the mind that these arse-helmets think they can go beyond lying in a bar and blather their crap into cyberspace & get away with it…
