Bob Barker donates $3mil to care for TBI warriors

| March 9, 2011

Former naval aviator and game show host, Bob Barker, helped a service organization make up the last 3 million bucks in it’s struggle to raise money to help warriors suffering from brain injuries and for the new construction at Bethesda Naval Hospital;

Bill White, president of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, got on the phone with Barker. The two spoke for 40 minutes about Barker’s service experiences and the difficulty of raising money in a recession, White said.

Barker, 84, said he was motivated to make the donation because of his naval service and his desire to help people in his retirement.

Barker just went up a few points in my estimation. If more of those Hollywood types would pry open their wallets and give back to real causes instead of just the culturally popular causes, maybe people would take them more seriously.

Thanks to ROS for the link.

I did not know he served, I just remember him as the host of “The Price is Right”.

Old Trooper

While I have been a fan of Bob’s for many years, I’m disappointed that he was the one that donated that speedboat to the Sea Shepard pirates (of Whale Wars fame)that harrass whaling ships in the Antarctic sea. I’m not a fan of whaling, but giving those nutbars, who break international sea laws at their pleasure, another tool to continue to break laws of the sea is not what I call good PR. Don’t forget that the chucklehead who wanted to be a human shield during the invasion of Iraq, with his group of social justice doorknobs, Ken whathisface, is a big time supporter and member of the Sea Shepards.

Jacobite

For a variety of reasons I can’t stand the man, and this doesn’t change my mind.

Carrie

He also made a $2m donation to Injured Marine Semper Fi fund.
Bless him for all he’s done.

Spigot

Like all of us, he has both good points and bad. And I agree totally regarding his support for the Sea Shepard morons…not a good move.

And to know that he is a former fighter pilot, now sheds light on why he was such a Hound Dawg with the hotties who graced the stage of his show…it explains a lot.

I never, ever met a fighter pilot who did not fancy himself a poon hound, par excellence.

For me, he’s about 75/25 to the good…

I didn’t know he was a naval aviator. There have been times when I have been critical of Mr. Barker, but he sure impressed me with this. He put his money into good use instead of giving it to some crap liberal trendy cause, and one does not often see that happen in the hollywierd scene.

Bravo Zulu to Bob Barker.

Bob’s ‘other’ accomplishments;

Aggressive support for HR2929, banning the use of elephants in circuses.

The 1987 ‘Fur Flap’, when he had a stand off with the producers of the Miss Universe Pageant over the use of fur coats on the show. While successful in preventing furs from being used at the 1987 pageant, he resigned in 1988 when it was clear the producers were going to bring them back.

Did away with the giving away of fur oand leather items on The Price is Right, and ensured hunting safaris where never a possible destination prize.

Actively advocates for the vegan life style.

Is a monetary supporter of not only the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, but also of United Activists for Animal Rights, and PETA.

Over the course of 11 years he was sued for sexual harassment and wrongful termination by 6 of the women working on The Price is Right, financially settling all the cases out of court while losing his own lawsuit against one of them.

He can spend money on Veteran’s issues till he’s blue in the face, so could Rosie O’Donnell for all I know, I could care less.

I’m of two minds, and tend to lean toward Jacobite’s position on this. There is good in bad people, and bad in good people. I think it’s wonderful that Mr. Barker gave that money for the help of TBI veterans. They certainly deserve and need it.

Having said that…it still doesn’t change the fact that he’s just another dirty old man.

DaveO

I used to watch the Price is Right with my grandfather. It was his favorite show. I don’t agree with all of Mr. Barker’s positions, but I will commend his consistency in holding to his beliefs. Being a naval aviator is just icing on that cake.

ROS

The man gives the $3M necessary to complete a viable and important Veterans’ facility and served his country, yet he’s still likened to Rosie O’Donnell. Nice.

Though his choices in associations leave much to be desired in reference to PETA, I see nothing wrong with being a champion for animal rights and give the man props for facilitating the completion of this center.

DefendUSA

ROS-
I agree. Barker should not be likened to Rosie, evah! I say just give him the kudos he deserves for this. Everyone makes mistakes and tries to move on. C’mon people…he’s putting his money where it can do the most good!!

Carrie

Regardless of where else he has donated HIS money, it is still very much appreciated. That Center for Excellence will be helping wounded/injured servicemembers and their families.
And the money donated to Semper Fi fund comes on the wake of a very brutal and busy fall in Afghanistan for units like 3/5.
Many wounded Marines and their families needed the fund’s support and assistance.

PintoNag

“I see nothing wrong with being a champion for animal rights.”
———-
If you are supporting the eithical use and treatment of animals, I agree with you. If you are talking about “animal rights” the way animal rights activists use that term, then I would have to disagree. I like my steak and pork chops a little too much for that!

PintoNag

…and I agree with the post above about it being HIS money, to spend where he pleases, and that it went to our vets smoothes over some rough spots in my book!

Old Trooper

I’m not saying that his donation isn’t appreciated, nor am I saying that he doesn’t have the right to spend his money where he pleases. I am just reminding others that not everything he spends his money on is what I would consider a good thing. That’s my opinion and all I’m doing is telling of other things he’s donated to. They weren’t “mistakes”, either, since he has been involved in such things for a very long time.

PintoNag

You’re right, Old Trooper. And I guess it bears pointing out that those kind of donations are tax deductible — so the cynic in me also says that donation may not have been totally out of the goodness of his heart.

DaveO

Animal rights are delicious. So are animal lefts. The rear however, is not a delicacy.

PintoNag

Oh no, good sir! It depends on which animal’s rear we are discussing! And the manner in which said rear is prepared!

ROS

I feel that if we weren’t supposed to eat animals, God wouldn’t have made them out of meat.

That said, the whaling in Japan is an absolute atrocity and Sea Shepherds have changed the direction of that industry drastically. While they are quite extreme and I much prefer ODF, they’ve done some good on that front, as well as the search operations for last month’s ship lost at sea.

Even Colin Powell is a vet with questionable leanings, but he’s still respected. I think B-squared deserves the same. Except on the PETA and hookers part.

Jacobite

Unfortunately, I don’t respect Powell either, again for a variety of reasons predating and including Desert Storm.

Old Trooper

PN’s right; pig butt can be mighty tasty! 🙂

Jacobite

I agree OT. 🙂
