Suicide bomber strikes Russian airport; 31 dead

| January 24, 2011

Drudge is running a lead from Reuters;

At least 31 people were killed and more than 100 injured on Monday in a suicide bombing at Russia’s biggest airport, Russian news agencies reported.

Russia’s ruble-dominated stock market MICEX fell by nearly two percent following the blast, which ripped through the baggage claim area at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport at 1332 GMT.

From the New York Times;

An explosion rocked an international terminal of Moscow’s busiest airport on Monday afternoon. There were conflicting reports on the number of dead and injured, but the toll appeared to be rising rapidly. The authorities were seeking to determine the cause, but Russian investigators released a statement saying that the case was being treated as a terrorist attack.

Gee. Think the commies will read more of those terrorist memos before they go out and support them?

According to RIA Novosti, from the FSB source at the scene: FSB was warned that a terract would take place in one of the Moscow airports today. FSB was tracing 3 guys but the guys were able to slip into airport international arrivals area to confirm that the atack was done by their suicide cohort, assess the damages and leave the airport without being caught.
That info was from the BBC Russian live reporting.

Of course, this will be blamed on Russian nationalists as an effort to enrage the Russian populace against the Chechens or other Muslim extremists from the Caucaus regions. W and Cheney must have been advising Putin on how to do this and get away with it just like they did on 9/11!

I’m kidding, BTW…..

Just goes to show that IMO, we’ve not only been lucky here thus far (Times Square Bomber, Underwear Bomber, etc), but that the reach of Al-Q, et al, is getting shorter and shorter.

Old Trooper

Sparky, I believe it was Chechen AQ-linked types, also. Putin won’t let this slide off his radar, that’s for sure. There will be hell to pay and you can take that to the bank. Bobo better take notes on what to do when it does happen here, cuz he’s gonna get a phd level example to study.

Probably better that the bomber died in the bombing. That was a lot kinder and quicker than what the Russians would do to him if they had bagged him alive.
I hope his friends realize what kind of hornets’ nest they have kicked; but if not, the Russians are just the ones to teach them!

one of the complaints about FSB’s dealing with these kind of terrorists is that the FSB leaves nobody alive to get intel from…
they did find a head of the guy they believe was a suicide bomber…

If the recovered brain housing group turns out to be the Chechen terr, I’m certain they’ll bury it in a pig skin bowling bag.

Somebody who actually knows might be able to answer a question for me.

Do the Russians really refer to Muslims and other non-Russian types from the Caucaus region as “blackasses”?

I’ve read it in different places but didn’t know if it was simply something made up by a couple of authors or if it was true.

Thanks

“Russia’s ruble-dominated stock market MICEX fell by nearly two percent following the blast….”

Somebody else may have known this was going down too.

When you have people like Boris Yeltsin in Moscow running against Vladimir Putin making outrageous statements such as we may need to resort to taking baths more than twice a month, for people like Sarah Palin to say she can see us from her porch, they are irresponsible not without consequences and we be seeing the fruit of it here.

Sarah Palin

I can see your ass from orbit, Dupnik.

How long until Janet starts singing her own praises on the fallacy of power known as TSA and our… ahem… secure boarders which will keep this from happening to us?

Old Trooper

Well, here is the problem, as it exists right now; the explosion happened in the baggage claim area, which in any airport in the US, doesn’t require TSA screening. So, Big Sis can babble all she wants, but it means nothing since where this happened is a relatively unsecure area in US airports. Granted, that may change, after this, but I have always thought that anyone wanting to pull a terror attack wouldn’t need to go all the way to the aircraft, but just in the crowded areas of the airport that aren’t as secured. Seems the Chechens have finally figured out what I have known for years.

PintoNag

Not to cause anyone’s hair to stand on end, but they know it here, too. Have you ever just watched the activity at a major airport? Seen who handled the baggage, and loaded and unloaded the plane?
There’s not a blue-eyed blond in the bunch, and English, if it’s spoken at all, is a second (DISTANT second) language.

That’s not a PC observation, it’s stereotyping to the nth degree, and if I have said something that is offensive, I will offer my apologies instantly.

But that’s not going to make me able to un-see what I have seen. In this instance, the king has no clothes.
