AZ legislature moves to loosen gun laws

| January 11, 2011

In the wake of the Tucson shooting this last weekend, some Arizona legislators are considering loosening gun laws which the Washington Post already considers too loose;

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik …is critical of two bills, House Bill 2001 and 2014, which would allow any college faculty member and those who have a proper permit to take their guns on campus.

Sen. Ron Gould says, “We ran a similar bill several years ago in the Senate and it was after the Virginia Tech shooting.”

Sen. Ron Gould, who supports both bills, says he wants to prevent that from happening again and says determined individuals are going to carry and use their gun regardless of laws against it. “We can’t put guns back into Pandora’s Box and seal it back up because once it’s open, you can never close it again.”

The reader who sent us the link (an Arizona resident) says

And to answer those who claim more guns equals more crime, one can still offer up the example of Kennesaw, Georgia.

In 1982 Kennesaw passed a local ordinance reading in part ‘every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.’

There is reasonable evidence that the passage of this law was partially responsible for decreased crime in Kennesaw, which enjoys crime rates less than half the national average per capita despite a population boom of over 300% in the last 20 years. (statistics found here , and here .)

A good article detailing the statistics, with a comparison to a comparable city in Illinois which enacted a complete gun ban, can be found here.

Signs, like they have here, that say “Guns prrohibited on this property” has an alternative meaning to criminals where they read it to say “Un-armed victims at this location”.

Sorry Jonn, I forgot to include my ‘handle’ with the submission.

Thats how we roll in AZ. FTW.

I can verify that you can see Kennesaw residents OPENLY carry on occasion. The biggest threat to Kennesaw are the self-absorbed Kennesaw State University students who reside there.

Old Trooper, that reminds me of a comment once by a cop answering a break-in near my old condo complex. The house broken into had an ADT security sign out front. The cop said, “Those ADT or Brinks signs aren’t a deterrent. They’re a neon sign saying Hey, look! We’ve got crap to worth stealing!”

“An armed society is polite society.”

Look it up. Open carry is STILL the great equalizer.

Imagine events in Tuscon if…

I think that a well trained and well armed individual is far more effective as acting as a sheep dog then most police do. And really, when you look at it Wolves are far less likely to attack if there are a ton of sheep dogs guarding the sheep.

I’ve got security, but I don’t post any of their signs. Stonewall is right, had more than one burglar tell me the same, if they advertise, they’ve got shit worth stealin’.

Just wondering the last time someone went to a gun range to initiate a mass murder attack… I just can’t figure out what the fascination is with schools and other places where they don’t allow guns…

Mo’ guns, less crime. If granny and others had had a gun there, they’d have shot his crazy ass (before he got off 30 rounds) instead of waiting for him to change mags before jumping him.

Thor

Since AZ doesn’t require permits to carry, I’m baffled as to why nobody in the crowd was carrying.

I recall there was a young man carrying there–buying smokes inside and came out and helped subdue as Loughner was already down and struggling. I can’t recall if he stated he drew down but was about to. 30rds from a semi doesn’t take THAT long. Anyone know the cyclic rate of a Glock 19? Nobody said it was well aimed fire.

@ Rob in Katy
2 Police officers (Former AF SPs) were killed during an arrest for domestic violence at a gun range in the panhandle of Fl back in the spring of 2009. There were plenty of people there shooting but not one intervened when 2 good guys were KIA. Whether events went too quickly for them to react or they were taking cover before returning fire or just standing there d*cks in hand–nobody knows…

I carry concealed everywhere I go just in case… but there will be times when lawfully armed people won’t get rounds off even in a situation like that. But it’s better than having no opportunity to protect yourself if you DO have the time.

Old Trooper

I don’t have an electronic security system in my house. I don’t need one. I have a 170lb. security alarm that doesn’t cotton well to strangers coming onto his turf without permission. If they manage to get by him, then they have to deal with me and it would probably be a tossup which way they want to go.
