“Brazen” attack on Bagram

| May 19, 2010

The Associated Press is reporting that a slew of Taliban fighters attacked Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan this morning;

Insurgents launched a brazen pre-dawn assault Wednesday against the giant U.S.-run Bagram Air Field, killing an American contractor and wounding nine service members in the second Taliban strike at NATO forces in and around the capital in as many days.

At least 10 insurgents were killed as Taliban suicide bombers attempted to breach the defenses of the base north of Kabul, while others fired rockets and grenades inside, according to a statement issued by U.S. forces.

Several US troops were wounded and a contractor killed. I figure it wasn’t as much “brazen” as it was foolhardy, desparate and almost comical if it wasn’t for the loss of one US life.

An Afghan provincial police commander, Gen. Abdul Rahman Sayedkhail, said the attack began when U.S. guards spotted would-be attackers in a car just outside the Bagram base. The Americans opened fire, triggering a gunbattle in which at least one militant triggered his suicide vest. Running gunbattles broke out as U.S. troops hunted down the other attackers.

So it wasn’t as much an assault as it was a goat roping exercise. Of course, the new York Times is too busy following this story to give much thought to anything else;

Yea, Read yesterday about the grim milestone. Sure enough people are already using it as a reason to leave.

It’s illogical. Even though Gen. Westmoreland’s “body count” doctrine was correctly dsimissed as a gauge for success in war, the media continues to gauge body count “milestones” as a basis for losing a war.

They are fixated on body count to the detriment of other indicators of success. They stopped reporting on Iraq altogether partly because the majority of accounts are positive (and contrary to their “War Is Not the Answer” narrative), and partly because accurately writing about such success takes genuine hard work.

They’re really not into hard work and doing their job. They’d rather run a body count story.

Reminds me of the ‘bold’, ‘brazen’ attack by Iranian back militants in southern AIraq where they kidnapped some US troops and then brazenly shot them in the back of the head while boldly running for their pathetic lives.

“partly because accurately writing about such success takes genuine hard work”. AP, don’t forget, that would also require said “correspondents” to go outside the wire for stories. Can’t have that, they’d miss the cocktail hour at the embassy. And get shot at!!

Does anyone know what Tango the attack started at?

I am guessing somewhere between 10 and 15, but wanted a specific if anyone with INTEL knows. If you need to keep it hush, email it to Jonn who will forward to me.

Sweet lord how the standards have fallen….was a time..Is there any hope for the media, the White House, the left in general…Was a time. Check with your vets about Khe Sahn, or any of the other outpost the VC/NVA tried to overrun…These Afgans are punks compared to the NVA.

First thing I noticed about the picture is that it was taken with a VERY long lens… The mountains around Bagram aren’t THAT close. Use long lens, shoot photo from the opposite side of the base and the far away firefight looks darn close.
My second thought was: I’ll bet the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines are still required to wear reflective belts during hours of darkness (to comply with the base’s Motor Vehicle regulations). Hello? Is there any common sense left above the O-5 level?

amazing stuff here

I’m confused, for the last couple of days you’ve been citing The New York Times for the Blumenthal-Veteran Issue, and now you’re attacking NYT for writing an article about losing 1000 troops. Which is it? Do you like The Times or not? Can we have some consistency here?

My son in law just left there about a month ago. We felt he was pretty safe there. I don’t know which Marine squadron from Cherry Point took their place. I sure hope they are safe.

Gee, now that I compare that picture to pictures I took while I was there, I realize that that smoke was coming from the dump. The same dump where a large burn pit is operated.
