Go Spurs

The Phoenix Suns have decided to make a statement about Arizona’s new immigration law:

PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns will wear “Los Suns” on their jerseys in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday night, owner Robert Sarver said, “to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona, and our nation.”

The decision to wear the jerseys on the Cinco de Mayo holiday stems from a law passed by the Arizona Legislature and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer that has drawn widespread criticism from Latino organizations and civil rights groups that say it could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics. President Barack Obama has called the law “misguided.”

Steve Nash’s opinion of the new immigration law:

“I think the law is very misguided. I think it’s, unfortunately, to the detriment of our society and our civil liberties. I think it’s very important for us to stand up for things we believe in. As a team and as an organization, we have a lot of love and support for all of our fans. The league is very multicultural. We have players from all over the world, and our Latino community here is very strong and important to us.”

I  don’t take people who chase an orange ball around for a living very seriously and Steve Nash just reinforced the reasons why. I’m not going to get into the reasons why Nash is full of it, because its been discussed multiple times already on this blog and a million others.

So thanks to your dumb stunt tonight Nash, despite the fact that I have been a longtime Arizona resident, I will be rooting for the Spurs.

Los Morons, thy name is Nash. Byte me, you fricking idiot.

Jon The Mechanic

I’ll trade Nash and the rest of his team to any country for several Nobel prize winners in Medicine and a pack of Bubble Yum Bubble gum, flavor to be named later.

Dave Thul

I’d like to see the local police respond by checking ID’s at the door of the stadium.

Adirondack Patriot

Steve Nash isn’t even an American citizen. He’s Canadian. So when he says “to the detriment of our society and our civil liberties,” I have to think he’s talking about Canada, because he sure as hell isn’t an American.

OldTrooper

Well, this is what I love about our country; they can say whatever they want, expose themselves as complete morons, and we can express ourselves any way we want, which includes not buying their product, which is supposedly for entertainment purposes. So, they are free to run their yappers and I’m free to not pay any attention to them, which includes not paying that over-inflated ticket price, to watch them.

B Woodman

OT,
Thank you. What you said.

Claymore

I’m glad the Suns are finally honoring all of those famous Latino basketball players…like that one guy…and…uh…well…then there was…ummm, no he’s black…well there was…hmm. Yeah.

AW1 Tim

Considering the comments he wrote, you’ve got to wonder if he actually bothered to READ the bill.

I stopped giving a crap about the NBA when Larry Bird retired.

zedechek

They have done this every May 5th for the past five years when they’ve made the Play-offs. So, while there is a political sentiment behind it this year, even without the immigration law being news its likely they would have continued their outreach to the Hispanic community.

OldTrooper

Cool, Zed; when are they going to reach out to the German community and wear some leather shorts during Oktoberfest? Otherwise, I will be offended.

AW1 Tim

I am sick to death of this “outreach” crap. Hispanic, Black, Asian, whatever. There is only ONE community in this nation: American, and only ONE race: Human.

Everything else is bullshit and needs to be called out each and every time. You want to celebrate Hispanics? kewl. Go to Mexico. Go to Hispania. You want to celebrate Asians? Kewl. Go to China and celebrate there.

There are only three colors in these Uni\ted States: red, White, and Blue.

“eff diversity and everyone who pushes that bigoted racist agenda. It serves only to divide and destroy.

respects,

Dan

Did you even finish the whole article?

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said his team was interested in taking part but couldn’t get new “Los Spurs” road jerseys in time for the game.

“It’s a wonderful idea,” Popovich said. “because it kind of shows what we all should be about. Sure there needs to be a lot of work done, obviously. A lot of administrations have done nothing about the immigration deal and now everybody’s paying the price, especially a lot of people in Arizona. That’s a bad thing, but the reaction is important, too, and this reaction [the Arizona law], I believe with Mr. Sarver, is inappropriate.”

To paraphrase, the NBA is where, every 24 seconds, a bunch of overpaid clowns jump up in the air. Basketball, as far as the NBA goes, took a back seat to showmanship when they started allowing guys who are 6-0 and taller to throw the ball down into the basket.
So, do I care what the Suns think, or the Spurs, or the Cavs? Nope, not at all. Do I think the citizens of Arizona deserve protection from this invasion, not only yes, but hell yes! And it takes a lot of chutzpah for a Canadian to think about lecturing Americans about “our society and our civil liberties”.
Claymore, I wonder if Nash is aware that there are more Serbians in the NBA than there are Hispanics? When is “Wear Serbian Colors Day” in the NBA?

Operator Dan

Dan,

I saw that, but the Spurs management and players aren’t completely on board with it yet. Either way, the Suns are insulting their home state and the people of their home state so I hope that the Spurs stomp them again like they have done in years past.

Truth from Mesa, AZ

You may be an Arizona resident, but there’s no way on God’s green earth you have ever been a longtime fan of the Suns. It would be like Celtics fans rooting for the Lakers. Obviously their fan base isn’t those of you who “don’t respect people who chase an orange ball around for a living,” because none of you would attend games or buy Suns gear to begin with. Quit your grandstanding, so the Suns lose the 1 ticket you buy at the beginning of the season every 10 years or so, you sure know how to stick it to ’em!

If you’re actually a Suns fan, answer this: Why do we hate the Spurs so much? I mean, if you’re even remotely a Suns fan, you’ll know who it boils down to and why. And you can try googling the answer, however, it’s not specifically listed because it’s indistinct to everyone except us, and it’s not as simple as say, why Celtics hate Kobe.

I love how everyone wraps themselves in the 1st Amendment but conveniently forgets that people with dissenting opinions have that same right. You basically said Nash shouldn’t be saying that, you fail to qualify why other than some vague reason that amounts to “because I don’t like it.” Quit being such a drama queen.

NHSparky

Nash has less room to talk about it than others because he’s a dumbass Canuck, “troof”. There comes a point where the team and it’s players piss on the fans enough, the fans turn on the team. Ask anyone in Cleveland what they think of Art Modell, or anyone in Indy what they think of the Irsay family.

Oh, and as someone who has family in the Phoenix area, the Suns aren’t exactly the end-all, be-all of Phoenix sports. Pretty sad when they take a back seat to ASU teams.

Operator Dan

Well Mesa somebody takes basketball a little too seriously…you realize its a game right?

And please point out to me either in my post or in the comments where anybody said that Nash didn’t have the right to say it? Nobody is disputing that, but you seem to be so upset by the fact I don’t worship the Suns to actually take the time to read what we are saying.

Old Trooper

Truth in Mesa: Here’s some “truth” for you; you’re a dumbass. There, I exercised my 1st Amendment right as a citizen of the United States. Nash, on the other hand, can run his yapper, however, his opinion is lower on the importance scale, since he babbles about “our society and civil liberties”, but conveniently leaves out that he’s not an American citizen and therefore; we have no idea what society and what civil liberties he’s talking about, the US, or Canada.
