Arizona AG suggests that ICE agents could get shot under the state’s self-defense laws

| January 23, 2026

Kris Mayes, Arizona’s attorney general, sat down with 12 News anchor Brahm Resnik for an interview. During a part of the interview, Mayes mentioned how masked agents risk getting shot by Arizona gun owners who may not be able to discern if the agents were legitimate or were up to no good. Resnik argued that this remark could be erroneously interpreted by some residents to go ahead and shoot federal agents. Mayes insisted that she was just stating the facts.

From New York Post:

The Democrat, in a sit-down with 12 News anchor Brahm Resnik, warned that Arizona’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which allows citizens to use deadly force if they believe they’re in imminent danger, could become a “recipe for disaster” if protesters clash with immigration officers.

“It’s kind of a recipe for disaster because you have these masked federal officers with very little identification, sometimes no identification, wearing plain clothes and masks,” Mayes said in the Monday interview, calling ICE “very poorly trained.”

“And we have a Stand Your Ground law that says that if you reasonably believe that your life is in danger and you’re in your house or your car or on your property, that you can defend yourself with lethal force.”

A flabbergasted Resnik repeatedly challenged Mayes, cautioning that her remarks could be interpreted as a “license” to residents to shoot a federal agent.

She retorted that she was merely stating a “fact,” not encouraging violence.

“If you’re being attacked by someone who is not identified as a peace officer — how do you know?” the state’s top prosecutor pressed, adding that “real cops don’t wear masks.”

“I mean if somebody comes at me wearing a mask, by the way, I’m a gun owner, and I can’t tell whether they’re a police officer, what am I supposed to do? No, I’m not suggesting people pull out their guns, but this is a ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ state.”

The attorney general, who was elected in 2022, unleashed her jaw-dropping comments as immigration officers begin to spread into parts of the Grand Canyon State.

The talk shows here took Mayes one step further. There you are driving your car and a bunch of leftist protesters begin hitting and shaking your car, Mayes just gave us permission to get rid of a bunch of leftists at one time. Stupid skrunt.

And then you would be on the receiving end of a case of 9mm lead poisoning.
-6 degrees at the homestead, full tank of propane, full pantry, 22kw Generac whole house generator, I think I am ready for the polar express!

Graybeard

A tad bit warmer in the East Texas Pineywoods, the Greater AO of the GB Compound. Only forecast to get into the upper teens through the weekend.

Just had our propane tank refilled, but a whole house generator would eat that up in less than 24 hours. Have a little portable generator, plenty of wool blankets, enough water in storage, and a old coffee pot if the power goes out.
For that matter the old Scouting storage shed still has stuff from our days of taking other people’s children on our vacations. Not concerned.

Yup, waiting for the snow here in Rock Ridge.

79 Deg. at 12:30 outside my enclosed porch and 76 Deg inside the porch where I have my PC. I hung up my LL Bean Wool made in the USA shirt jac yesterday. Should have brought my second one down here when I retired in 2007. Now sweating out when the freezing cold spell is going to hit us this coming Mon. or Tues. Dungarees hanging up for that and have a pair of shorts on now. Glad that I don’t live up in the Florida panhandle

I went through my winter emergency checklist and everything on it was already done. I then debated breaking the ATV out of storage and decided if the weather actually does show up, there isn’t anywhere I actually want to go anyway.

I am anticipating a lot of rain and maybe some ice on Saturday. If I am disappointed and “Icemageddon”, then maybe I won’t have to go to work on Monday, which would mean I would have to stay inside by the fire with a good book and uncork a bottle of Laphroaig while the old lady does her work from home gig. If I shut door to the office, shouldn’t hear a thing. In which case I may nod off from time to time.

I am thinking if I can survive that, I can survive anything.

75 today in balmy South Bluntzer, about 20 miles north of Corpus Christi Bay. Whole house propane generator is ready to go, swore off on beer for dry January. Still, I’m thinking about heading down to McAllen for the weekend in contemplation of relocating.

Sure glad I don’t live in NE Massachusetts, anymore or ever again.

Best description of “Scoutmaster” I’ve ever heard!

Better relook Sunday night’s low!

SFC D

It’s a balmy and wet 53 at D’s Cantina and continuous soirée, where every day’s a party and every meal a feast! Border traffic is minimal, load cars have stopped, and the Shiner is cold.

NHSparky

You just described Casa de Sparky Nuevo.

In fact my generator has its own dedicated propane tanks. It was either that or trench out a line to the opposite side of the house, AND install a larger line AND install a larger tank.

That being said, everything full. Forecast high of 5. Let’s see how long it takes to grill a steak this afternoon before the snow hits.

The AZ AG is a DA?

Also a train the trainer of law enforcement, that is how she knew that ICE agents were poorly trained.

Forest Bondurant

In that regard, the only thing I’ve found about her involvement in “train-the-trainer” was the state’s partnership between her office and the Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona to create such a program. Its purpose was to prevent human trafficking and address the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous people within the states 22 tribal communities.

I haven’t read anything that suggests ICE agents have been part of that initiative.

Perhaps I’m missing something…

Absolutely. Here is Chandler SWAT. Rounds outgoing and courtesy of the AAG.

Not a drop, flake or pellet of precipitation anywhere in my state and people are acting like it is end times.

Toxic Deplorable B Woodman

Very little precipitation out our way.
The shelves are full, and life is dry.

Forest Bondurant

Yep. You’d think someone had announced that another public health emergency had started. People are panic shopping and clearing shelves in my AO.

UpNorth

Up here in western central Michigan, about 35 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, our local Walmart looked just like that. Likely a result of an influx of refugees from what has become the West Michigan hive of progs(Grand Rapids). They know nothing about hunting, fishing, or stocking up, so they panic buy.

Odie

Probably had someone deliver their online grocery order too so they wouldnt have to bother with changing from their sweat pant pj’s.

Toxic Deplorable B Woodman

Soooooo……you’re going to tell me that you’re confused between officers of the law, with helmets and gear, clearly marked front and back, with “POLICE”, “ICE”, DHS”, and protesters, NOT equipped and marked??
Bitch, best get a red tipped cane and a seeing eye dog (if one will tolerate you).

Mason

These are the Democrat talking points;

  • Real cops don’t wear masks
  • ICE agents aren’t properly identified as police
  • ICE agents are poorly trained

All three of these things are abjectly wrong.

11B-Mailclerk

The Donkuloids are wishcasting someone to fire on Fort Sumpter 2.0 so they can deny responsibility for another futile pointless insurrection.

No amnesty this time. They know better.

Tallywhagger

I remember as a boy being taught to identify and know your target before you shoot. Hell, most people know to do that. Yet, there are some specious folks in Arizona that seem to anxiously fall astray of ordinary things.

RGR 4-78

Yet, there are some specious folks in Arizona that seem to anxiously fall astray of ordinary things.”

In all fairness, it’s not just Arizona.

SFC D

I do believe that 99% of Arizonans are smarter than the governor and AG. Of course, they set the bar very low. As does Mark “Foreskin” Kelly (h/t RGR 769). The Tucson city council is twisting themselves into knots figuring out what they can and can’t do regarding ICE. It’s very entertaining.

rgr769

I wish one of these demoncat pols would tell us the truth about why they want all these illegal alien invaders who are subject to deportation to their stay here so they can exploit our welfare programs and prey on our citizens. Maybe they would admit the truth of the replacement theory/conspiracy of these progressive crypto-commies.

Hack Stone

You have to keep those numbers up to maintain the House seats when redistricting comes along.

rgr769

Welp, my wish was just granted on Will Cain’s Fox show. A Democrat party activist/strategist admitted the Great Replacement Theory is the objective of her party. She has been in confabs of party leaders and major donors where they have stated that the party views the illegals as the future voters/residents who will give them defacto one-party rule forever, like Commiefornia.

Too bad the city clowncil of Tucson can’t put as much energy into providing decent streets to drive on.

Rejyna Romero thinks filling potholes is racist.

SFC D

She also believes Cesar Chavez fought for illegal immigrant rights. Who wants to tell her?

Awful Cause C

“99% of Arizonans are smarter than the governor and AG.”

50.3% of Arizonans voted for Katy Hobbs.
280or so more Arizonans voted for (possibly male) Kris Mayes than the republican candidate.
Maybe the percentage of smarter Arizonans is not as high as you would hope.

SFC D

I’m going to translate your post, if you don’t mind:

“The greater metropolitan Phoenix area voted for Katie Hobbs and Kris Hayes”.

Nobody else matters.

Awful Cause C

That sounds like a terrible, yet common situation and I’m saddened to hear it.

I will say that just because they now like guns and the 2A, doesn’t mean that they can use them effectively!!

Hack Stone

“Poorly trained” ICE officers. Getting awfully tired of hearing that. According to Al Gore’s Amazing Internet, peace be upon him, ICE agents receive 12 weeks of training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). A majority of them are prior law enforcement at the local, state or federal level, as well as US military service. That does not sound like poorly trained to Hack Stone.

Skivvy Stacker

A little covert threat there. No two ways about it. And she knew it.
Arizona’s AG needs to be getting her ass handed to her.

The Marxaholics are trying to poke some deniable/disposable anarchist to start the Revolution for them.

Cowardly fools.

Don’t do it, fools. You do not win. It’s not even as close as 1861-1865. And this time, no amnesty. Don’t do it.
