Gerber MK2

Jurors find Ryan Schafer not guilty of murder in death of Daryk Maki

Bryce Buyakie, Anthony Thompson
A 30-year-old Canton man who was accused of the November 2024 shooting death of Daryk Maki in Akron was found not guilty in Maki’s death.

Ryan Schafer was charged with murder, felony murder, two counts of felonious assault and four firearm specifications, which would have carried additional prison time if he was found guilty.

A Summit County Common Pleas jury found him not guilty on all four charges on Nov. 25.

The shooting occurred Nov. 6, 2024, in the 2600 block of Nesmith Lake Boulevard at about 10 p.m. Schafer fatally shot Maki in the neck after Maki pushed him following what was described as a shouting match. Maki was pronounced dead nine days later.

Schafer argued that he acted in self-defense after he drove to his ex-girlfriend’s house near Ellet to check on his daughter. Schafer testified that he was concerned for his daughter’s safety after hearing that Maki, who left a substance abuse rehabilitation program that day, was drinking and acting violently.

The ex-gf chose, poorly.

That Gerber is an object of my desire, indeed.

Wish I’d got one in the 1980s when I could have afforded them and they were available.

Hindsight still 20/20

Try acquiring a Randal #1. (grin) About a 4 year wait last I checked.

Worth it.

Thanks to Pop, I had his 1958 vintage Number One prior to enlisting.

MSG X: ….” Where did you get that? …. You ain’t old enough to have one of those!”

Thanks also to my CO for letting me keep it in the barracks and to wear it.

I bought one at the Infantry bookstore at Ft. Benning. It was a Mk. I. Someone stole it from my wall locker at Ranger School in 1968 while we were at Camp Darby. I think I only paid about $40 for it.

Bought one in 1975 or so right before USAF Survival School. Got rid of it because of the serrated waist …. I wanted the one with the offset blade and wasp waist (no serrations).

That would be the original model, the Mark I.

Bought a Mk2 at the PX when I was AD back in ’89. Lost track of it during one of the many barracks room shuffles were were having to do when our Pershing unit was closing down. All I can say is, somebody opened the drawer of a 3-drawer chest and got a lucky find. ☹️

Wanted to add, the story I read was that the Exchange system didn’t want to sell “fighting” knives, so they made Gerber put serrations on it in order to sell it as a “survival” knife.

rgr1480

I was told the serrations were to cut rope and necks easier.

That’ll work too.
