Can Brits Meet NATO Obligations?

British ‘Home Defence’ Seriously Lacking, Undermining NATO Contribution Credibility Finds Report

Oliver JJ Lane

“Doubts exist” over whether the UK is prepared to defend its homeland and overseas territories from acts of war and “grey zone” hybrid attacks, while work to rectify the situation is “glacial” and cloaked in counter-productive secrecy, a critical report by the Commons Defence Committee found.

The UK should be honest with the British people about the country’s security situation “and [the public’s] role in it”, and appoint a Minister of Homeland Security to see through the delivery of reforms, the Commons Defence Committee said. A report into the British contribution to European security found that the UK is questionably able to support the wider European security picture because it can hardly defend itself, with even NATO basics like having a plan for homeland defence (a ‘war book’) not thought to be fulfilled.

The “current threat to European security is significant”, with “systemic threats posed by China, Iran and North Korea”, the report found. The “plausible worst-case scenario”, the committee stated they had heard in evidence submissions, is “the potential for the US to be at war with China, or at least heavily engaged in a crisis with China, and Russia comes in and tries to take advantage of that situation”.

To be a credible partner in defence the UK has to be at least able to deter and defend attacks on its own territory, it was stated of basic NATO assumptions.

Breitbart

Another unintended consequence of unfettered socialist multiculturism and death-by-diversity is a hollow military. If Great Britain is unable and/or unwilling to defend itself there in zero expectation it can defend Europe. This asks the question, why are they still a member?

Progressive, sissy, muslim-appeasing Britain doesn’t want to pony-up for reasonable defense.

We should lay down the keels for three or four more Carriers, because the UK will not be available for us in about 10 years.

Barring major reforms within the next year or two, the UK is -done-. In ten years, it won’t be recognizable and will be openly hostile.

Nah…I think we need a new “Intrepid”.

“…the UK has to be at least able to deter and defend attacks on its own territory.”

The most important locations for Islam are Mecca, Medina, and London, so good luck with that.

Indeed.

“This asks the question, why are they still a member?”

More like “why are we still a member?”
Along with most of the rest of Europe, Great Britain has the wealth and population to defend itself while at the same time becoming less worth saving.

Amateur Historian

Where people see a problem with Britain being being militarily weak, I see free real estate (half-sarcastic).

Great Britton is slowly but surely becoming Mediocre Britton, and is well on the way to Poor Briton.
I used to have the highest respect for the United Kingdom, even as our adversaries during our American Revolution.
I have always known them to be a people who may have spoken like fairies, but who fought like demons.
But over the past 20 years I have watched them debase themselves, and surrender to the demands of an invading group of slime that hold their own views as superior over every other in the world, and who will not stop until they destroy freedom and liberty in every corner and depth of the Earth.
The saddest part of this is that it is NOT the people of England…it is the weak kneed, half assed, twinkle toed, slimy communist cock strokers who try to pass themselves off as LEADERS.
Maggie Thatcher, we could really use you now.

Slow Joe

Well, while I agree with most of what you said, I am going to push back on one point.

Like the wise philosopher Joseph de Maistre said in the early 1800s, “every nation has the government they deserve”, so I wouldn’t let British people off the hook.

This is what the UK people got, whether the British bricklayer or Irish dockworker asked for it or not. It’s hard to believe that the UK was one of the world’s dominant empires up through WWII. A couple of days ago, I watched a video about the Empire’s decline, from having a hold over nearly a quarter of the world’s territories to reverting back to small island status.

Multiculturalism has watered down the British people. Their government has hastened the destruction of the once-proud former empire, especially over the past 20-30 years. We Americans like to tout our Second Amendment as the ultimate protection against a tyrannical government… the British willingly gave up their firearms and are now faced with what are essentially thought police, all while dodging increasing violent crime on the part of immigrants. Don’t say anything hurtful, and definitely don’t post your thoughts on the internet, though.

But oh well. My ancestors left England well before the Acts of Union. Smart people, moving to this then-mostly unexplored New World and away from the Crown.

The thing is, even the most conservative Brit still comes in around moderate Dem on our political spectrum. For those who are slowly realizing they’ve already cut off their own nose on immigration and will be looking to flee, it will be like getting a New Yorker leaving because of high taxes.

“Sorry, UK, no more room at the inn. Try our attic (Canada).”
