ICE paying recruiting bonuses

AOC-ICE-detention-centers
ICE is offering signing bonuses… pretty sweet ones.
The agency is hoping to recruit deportation officers and other agency roles with signing bonuses of up to $50,000, and student loan debt forgiveness of up to $60,000. Other benefits include higher-than-standard overtime pay and promises of enhanced retirement benefits.
The recruitment drive aims to double the agency’s existing headcount. Currently, ICE has 20,000 employees between officers and support roles. The President has vowed to deport one million people per year, though in July, only 27,483 individuals were deported, a 13% drop from the month before.
Gonna have to make up some of them numbers, guys – even almost doubling to 50,000 a month is still only 600,000 annually.
The large cash incentives offered by ICE point to the real issue: Americans are not in support of ICE’s activities. CNN reported in July that 55% of Americans say the president has “gone too far” in deporting illegal immigrants. A further 59% oppose arresting and detaining undocumented immigrants who have no criminal records.
Love how they clarified that for me in that first sentence. Talk about trying to make your facts fit your conclusion – and using a CNN poll to do it.
The “One Big Beautiful” tax and spending bill allocated more than $76 billion to ICE, funding this new spending spree for the agency. The bill gives ICE nearly 10 times its previous budget, and makes it the best funded federal law enforcement agency in the country.
They have to specify law enforcement, or it brings up other departments like DoD which has ten times the budget.
However, even those who are insiders believe the surge in recruitment is a bad idea. Speaking to the Associated Press, former ICE chief of staff Jason Houser said he believes the recruitment drive will see the agency hiring bad actors. He compares the move to the recruitment drive in Customs and Border Protection in the 2000s. MoneyWise
Should anyone point out that Houser was Chief of Staff for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the folks IN CHARGE of that hiring? When did he do that – during 2021-2023 under the Biden administration. So I think he’s saying “I sucked at what I was supposed to do”?
Lots of outrage and spin in the original article – I really don’t recommend reading it.
I am struck, however, by how the hiring incentives for ICE compare to enlistment bonuses for the military.

Ah, remember way back in 2025 when Auto Pen was president and the border was impossible to secure? The golden days of human trafficking have come to an end.
Only 600,000 estimated to be deported this year?
Gotta bump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers.
Here is to hoping the gender studies major doesn’t use this to pay off school loans and undermine ICE.
I wonder if this is one of their textbooks, or required reading (blue hair dye and nose ring sold separately, but available in the campus bookstore).
Money talks. You know the rest.
Up to 50k sign on bonus, up to 60k student loan forgiveness + what you would normally make (+overtime) and benefits package? A pretty sweet retirement should you stay, what’s not to like.
I’m not sure how many people know this, but it needs to be advertised better. Maybe some prime time ad placement on AB,NBC,CBS, CNN etc… would do the trick to get the word out. The networks would twist themselves into knots trying to decide whether to take the money, or say those ads don’t follow our values. At which point, somebody would (or could) make the case that conservative values or opinios were being suppressed.
Prime time being when GMA, The View, local news from 4 to 6 pm, but especially when the national eve news is airing.
They received 125,000 applications this month, sounds like whatever they are doing is working. I will say that probably 70% are completely unqualified, half of those remaining will quit in the middle of the process. About 30% will flunk the physical, poly or background check.
Still, on the surface they have almost the numbers they need already. This is in spite of (or maybe because of) the no sense liberal media claiming that Trump is building a secret army.
As with anything, you will get ones and bad ones.
The bonuses are to lure LEO’s from other departments. You’re not getting someone “off the streets” with the proper vetting, and training (law and weapons) in less than18 months maybe 12. Becoming a Federal Agent is like joining the military. These cops coming from other departments are like prior military/reservists going active duty.
I’ve seen the “activists” saying they’re joining ICE to become disruptors, but they’ll NEVR be accepted because they can’t past most or all of the physical and moral requirements. Like SRB’s the bonuses are paid over time and not all at once.
The melt down in DC started a couple of months ago. Trump has been stripping budget from other DHS LEAs and sending as much as he can to ICE. Some of them literally have no money. Everything has been thrown at them so far as resources go to send home millions of people who never should have been here in the first place until the Auto Pen opened the border and invited them in.
Do people still watch TV?
I haven’t watched an actual TV channel in years.
The media I consume it’s all online.
If they ran the ads, we would find out soon enough. Not all can either afford streaming, or get their internet from less than reliable providers (think rural). Soon enough somebody would provide a link. Not tech savvy, but i assume you could stream through your phone to TV to watch.
Either way, it would be fun to listen to the waiting and gnashing of teeth, at least to me.
If it was The View, would it be whaling and gnashing of teeth?
Just generating outrage via the CNN poll:
Who is going to cut their grass or clean their homes if those workers are deported!!!
Don’t forget to add; deliver toilet paper and ice cream.
Fuckin A, if I was younger I’d totally jump on that. 20 years of service and my bonus was continued employment…you gonna give me 50K to take out the trash? Yes please
There is no upper age limit either. Although you would have to run a 14:20 1.5 mile in addition to the rest of the PT test.
Can you link to the PT test?
That sounds interesting.
Here I was thinking that my real Law Enforcement days were over. That’s it, I’m throwing my hat into the ring. If they will take some 20 year old twerp with no training or experience then surely a retired military and semi-retired law enforcement officer will be great for the game. Gotta be some kind of transition program.
Don’t want the Deportation Officer job, that is only GS6-7, I make more than that with my part time gig even with the 50k bonus. Criminal Investigator is GS 7-9 to start. That is a little better, with good locality pay and LEAP should make a touch more.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell No!
Retired Deportation Officer, GS-12, they are the main people you see rounding up everyone in news. It starts at GS-7 or at least used to but it promotes to GS-12 non-competitive (you get GS-12 in 3 yrs.) Been this way for 30 yrs.
I have a feeling that most won’t last three years.
All Federal Law Enforcement jobs start between GS 5-9. The key is taking a covered position, retire at 20 yrs and age 50 or 25 yrs service any age.
Ah, but you can also retire at age 60 with five years of service. If they have truly lifted the age cap.
A gym buddy of mine is a US Marshall, and they’ve been tasked to escort the deportees on flights out of the country on a rotating basis from departure points in the South East. I have not caught up to him recently, but I’m curious if he’s been to Alligator Alcatraz.
That was ordered closed by a judge due to lack of environmental impact statement.
Of course a judge order it closed…that don’t make it so…if these judges had their way, illegals aliens would be able to kick you out of your home and move right in. Its a LONG WAY from closed as it winds its way through the legal system. The Trump Administration has a very good record vs. these activist judges.
Sounds like the same old solution, throw money at a problem until it goes away. Why couldn’t we just, I don’t know, use the guys we already have, and do away with catch and release? Or maybe raid a few trucking companies hiring illegals so they don’t crash and kill people. The post that to the internet. People will get the message.
Too many illegals.
Yep. One illegal is too many illegals.
As a DA civilian, I got an email from OPM the other day asking if I was interested in moving to ICE, and by the way, here’s the USA Jobs link. Tempting.
I got that too. 180 day temporary posting, may deploy in 96 hours. No say in where you go.
