A good way to close out Military Appreciation Month — Memorial Day. The day we remember those who have fallen on behalf of our country while serving in the armed forces. The flag is at half-staff until noon to honor those who died while serving in the U.S. military. Then it’s raised to full-staff at noon to honor America’s battle heroes. Have an honorable Memorial Day!

I wish I could get down to Dad’s grave to plant a flag there. There are no markings to show he was a veteran from The Greatest Generation, so I doubt anyone else has done so.

My only issue is fighting the traffic to get there. Today has been heavy storms in the AO, and I’m getting where I just avoid the freeways into Houston (and all the roads in Houston) when it is storming.

I never deployed when I was serving in the Navy. Others went in my stead. Some didn’t come back. There are times that I feel I didn’t do my duty due to never deploying, but this day is not about me. I watch this video every year, to remember those who gave all for our country, freedom, and way of life.

Trust in the Lord God with all your heart and he shall protect you, even in bad or scary times when His protection doesn’t seem obvious. He will always be there to give you shelter.
Dad told me his story about Psalm 91 once when, for some reason, I was terrified about death and dying.
He was somewhere in France, just days after his 21st birthday, and they were moving in the dark to attack a German line about daybreak.
He was moving up the slope of a ravine, so scared he had to hold on to the trees to stay upright and be able to move. For some reason, a halt was called.
In the early light, he pulled his pocket New Testament with Psalms out and turned – on purpose or accident I do not remember – to Psalms 91. These very verses.
He read them, and accepted the promise of God’s protection.
He had already placed his faith in Jesus Christ, accepting Him as his personal Lord and Savior. He now placed his trust in God’s faithfulness to those who rely on Him.
He told me “After that moment, I was never afraid again. Cautious, but not afraid.”
As they moved out, after daybreak, and the Germans were dropping mortars on the advancing line. Men were falling to his right and to his left, but he and his ammo man were not touched, although you know that the machine gunner is a prime target.
When he later developed pneumonia and was hospitalized, he was not with his unit during the German attack known as The Battle of the Bulge. Many of his comrades were wounded or killed, but he was kept safely out of harms way.
Although I have never served in the military, as you all well know, I also accepted this promise and fully placed my trust in Him Who was already my Lord and my Savior.
He has never failed me.

The author of Psalm 91 used a combination of events as metaphors: a battle scene, corruption and backstabbing within society, etc. Its actual meaning addressed the human tendency to abide by flesh and blood desires, ego-driven, in contradiction to what God calls for people to do.
God as a refuge, sword and shield, etc., continues the theme where Moses addressed the blessings and curses of God. He told the Hebrew tribes that if they followed God’s commandments, they would be blessed beyond their imaginations. This included the ability to defeat more powerful enemies. However, if they disobeyed God’s commandments, they would be cursed beyond their imaginations.
Pestilence, plagues, animals, etc., are metaphors describing a corrupt people. Lawless and godless are interchangeable to describe a corrupt people.
One of the things that Psalm 91 is saying is that if we remain true to embedding God’s commandments in our actions, regardless of the temptations to do otherwise, God will be at our side and reward us and those who do not do the same would face judgment. Daniel’s friends in the furnace, walking around unharmed with an angel of God by their side is one of the symbols representing this theme.
Psalm 23, God as cosmic Shepherd, communicates many of the same themes.
