Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth proudly announced last week that he was ending the “Women, Peace, and Security” program in the military.
“WPS is yet another woke divisive/social justice/Biden initiative that overburdens our commanders and troops — distracting from our core task: war fighting,” Hegseth wrote in a social media post. “WPS is a United Nations program pushed by feminists and left-wing activists. Politicians fawn over it; troops hate it.”
Now, I personally know little about it other than that it exists, so I am not going to try and debate the merits of it. But… it was a Trump program.
The Trump Administration is committed to advancing women’s equality, seeking to protect the rights of women and girls, and promoting women and youth empowerment programs. The legislation for the program was drafted and supported by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, previously the congresswoman from South Dakota. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also been a strong supporter, including recently complimenting the program’s impact within his department. Military Times
Hegseth says the program has run amok and that the Democrats have warped it past its stated goals; meanwhile the current administration (which had plenty of time to cancel):
Last week, U.S. military officials met in Japan with defense leaders from six Pacific countries for the third annual Women, Peace and Security workshop, designed to discuss ways to promote peace and security as well as women’s issues.
One would think that anyone who could generate a 6000+ man parade in six weeks could have cancelled the conference with 100 day’s (twice as long) to play with. Does seem to reinforce the perception that everyone’s out of step but Petey – or maybe that someone’s left hand doesn’t now what their right is doing.

What’s the issue here?
We have seen before many instances of the Left kidnapping and expanding many programs designed by Republitards-With-Good-Intentions.
The Left weaponized institutions and agencies whose initial responsibilities were necessary and justified.
This is not new.
I think the issue is that Hegseth might be a little hungover in the morning.

This isn’t the first time he has scrapped something he created claiming it was Democratic DEI.
Good God David. Take 5 minutes to see they’re not the same thing. One is a law(PL 115-68.) The other is a 2023 policy paper by the Biden White House from 2023. One puts women in positions to advise with regard to international conflicts, the other is regarding “gender responsive policies.” One is a law, the other is a policy paper. Take 5 minutes and save your mind some stress. President Trump makes plenty of mistakes if you want to nit pik. Jesus Christ, he is not. Heck, he’s more like Jerry Lewis. Great entertainer.

Call me crazy, but not every executive or secretary action requires a tweet or social media posting. Just implement necessary and appropriate changes as necessary and move on.
Democrats and other folk who don’t like it will complain soon enough.

I’m glad it’s going away, as the bureaucracy behind WPS (the CCMD I work with had 4 1/2 FTE from GG13-15 equivalent working on this project) had grown well beyond what the law required. That being said, there was no reason for DOD/SECDEF to spike the football here.
Just let the program die as the formal legal requirements on DOD expired at the end of the year anyway.
