HPD: Teens trespassing in vacant apartment get into gunfight with officers
Police said one teen was shot and another cut by broken glass. They were both detained and taken to the hospital for treatment.
HOUSTON — Two teens accused of trespassing at a southeast Houston apartment complex Saturday got into a gunfight with officers, according to police. One of those teens was shot.
According to HPD Assistant Chief J. Skelton, police were initially called out to the apartment complex at 8360 Park Place which is near Galveston Road at around 1 p.m.
Skelton said that apartment management found out about the suspects — a 15-year-old female and 17-year-old male — through an app used by residents there. They learned the teens were in a vacant apartment.
Officers who responded went with managers to the apartment. After knocking on the door, a manager used a key to open the unit for police and that’s when Skelton said the officers were immediately met by a suspect with a gun.
The officers retreated. At some point after that, Skelton said the suspects broke out a window in the back of the unit to get out. As soon as they were outside, Skelton said they started firing on officers.
Officers fired back, hitting the 17-year-old.
When KHOU 11’s Troy Kless asked if both suspects had weapons, Skelton said that would be part of the investigation.
The 17-year-old and the 15-year-old were both taken to the hospital for treatment. The 17-year-old was being treated for a gunshot wound. The 15-year-old suffered a cut from the window.

HPD: Officers shoot robbery suspect who fired at them after early morning crime spree
According to Houston police, the suspect had been on a crime spree that started in west Houston Sunday morning.
HOUSTON — Officers got into a shootout with a man they said was on an early-morning crime spree, with the suspect being shot and taken to a hospital.
Houston police said the exchange of gunfire happened in northwest Harris County, but the crime spree started earlier in west Houston. During a news conference Sunday morning, HPD Assistant Chief J. Skelton said at around 3 a.m., the man robbed three women of the car they were in along Richmond Avenue west of Fondren. Then, 12 minutes later, Skelton said he robbed a convenience store about a mile away, taking off with several hundred dollars.
Officers from the Midwest and Northwest patrol started looking for the suspect when one of the officers spotted the vehicle he was in. They started to follow him and saw him pull into an apartment complex near Easton Commons Drive near the intersection of Highway 6 and Huffmeister in northwest Harris County.
“As the officers converged the suspect exited the stolen vehicle ran through the courtyard and immediately started to fire at the officers who were pursuing, officers returned fire striking the suspect and taking him into custody,” Skelton said.
No officers were hurt in the shooting. The suspect was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. It’s unclear why the man wen to the apartment complex.
In all, Skelton said five officers were involved, ranging in experience from six months to three years. They will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard in shootings that involve officers. Because the shooting was in Harris County, the sheriff’s office will be involved. There will also be an internal HPD investigation.
