Walgreens employee with concealed carry license fatally shoots theft suspect
The shooting was reported at around 2:10 a.m. outside Walgreens, 522 Torrence Ave., in Calumet City.

A man who allegedly stole items from a south suburban Walgreens and pointed a gun at workers was shot and killed by an employee who possessed a concealed carry license, authorities said.

The shooting was reported at around 2:10 a.m. outside Walgreens, 522 Torrence Ave., in Calumet City. According to authorities, a 42-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were approached by employees after exiting the store without paying for merchandise they had taken.

Employees took the merchandise from the woman, who fled the scene on foot. The man, however, displayed a handgun when he was approached, police said. In return, a Walgreen’s employee, who possessed a valid concealed carry license, opened fire, striking the suspect, according to authorities.

The suspect was found by police driving a vehicle in the 1600 block of Sibley Boulevard near Yates Avenue and taken to a local trauma center, where he later died, police said. He was identified as Mario Almendarez, of Chicago, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

No word if the late Mr. Almendarez possessed a valid concealed carry license as well. Thanks, Gun Bunny.

The contest for ages has been to rescue liberty from the grasp of executive power.

There has to be a joke in there about Calumet baking powder and not rising (from the dead).
But it’s oh-dark-too-damn-early and I’m in a pre-caffeinated state.
What a can say is that the perp didn’t expect his victim to be armed. Tsk. Poor victim selection skills, and the Seven Pees (Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance).
I wonder how Walgreens reacted to the news that one of their employees was armed (GASP!) and used his gun responsibly to protect himself and his fellow employees (GASP! GASP!)? Most Big Box stores frown on such things.

Imma gonna go out on a limb and say that Mr. Alemdarez didn’t plan on picking up a few ozs of lead on his shopping trip.

Mr. Webster, if all of the citizens had us one of them “Broomstick” Mausers we could make a clean sweep of the power hungry despots.

My instincts tell me Mr. Almendarez was prohibited from carrying firearm…something about it being illegal for convicted criminals to do so.
