JD Vance, named Monday as the Republican vice presidential running mate of former President Donald Trump, is known as many things: a bestselling author, a Republican senator, a former venture capitalist, a leading voice of conservatism, a onetime Trump critic – and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
Vance, 39, is the first millennial on a major-party ticket, and a prominent veterans group heralded him Monday as the first among the post-9/11 generation of veterans to appear on a presidential ballot.

Vance was raised in Middletown, Ohio, and enlisted in the Marine Corps after graduating high school in 2003. He served a four-year enlistment as a combat correspondent, during which he escorted civilian press and gathered information and wrote articles for a military news service. He deployed to Iraq as a corporal with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing in 2005.

Good call on Vance. He will be useful in putting a youthful face on the campaign. He’s also young enough to carry on Trump’s legacy, yet old and mature enough to be trusted with the Presidency should Trump die in office (hopefully of natural causes).
I used to think that Trump was too old to be elected. Having Vance as backup means that I can now vote for Trump with full confidence.

As a retired officer (and former E4) I have zero issues voting for him. If he had been a E4 in the Marines and that was all he had ever done with his life, that would be one thing. But he has moved so far past that It is practically a footnote.
It isn’t a footnote though. The Marines build one hell of a foundation for character. Sure, if you look hard enough you can find a bad one, But they are the rare exception rather than the rule. The kids today that say they are missing out on something or putting their life on hold to join the military for a few years have no idea what they are missing out on. It is life, an important part of it too.
The number of people that I know that regret not doing it, vastly outnumber those that regret doing it.
