Springdale police investigating deadly shooting at nightclub

Lakyra Banks
SPRINGDALE, Ark. —
According to Sergeant Matt Ray with Springdale police, officers were called to Zabana nightclub around 2 a.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived they found 21-year-old Luis Steven Ogando Lopez with two gunshot wounds. Ogando Lopez was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

According to Sgt. Ray, the other party involved was a security guard who worked for the nightclub. Ray said the guard remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The guard was taken to the police station for questioning.

Ray said the initial investigation revealed that Ogando Lopez was kicked out of the establishment after causing issues. They also said he had a knife with him in the nightclub. Ogando Lopez then went to a vehicle and retrieved a firearm.

To his credit Mr. Lopez correctly surmised his knife was inadequate in a gun fight. He failed to recognize the importance of being the first one there actually armed with one.

Mr Lopez FAFO. It won’t happen again.
Very little good happens at a bar after midnight.
Either someone is shot/killed, or you get a good look that morning in bright daylight at the person you took home in the dark while drunk.

Security guards, rent-a-cops, mall ninjas, the list goes on. I used to find mall security funny, as some companies had them wearing goofy headgear like straw campaign hats, and the few interactions I had with them as a punk teenager in the ’90s made them seem over-the-top in terms of wanting to be “somebody”. There was a mall ninja thread on some forum or another in the mid-2000s that was hilarious. Think Jeremy Dewitte, Mall Edition. Tacticool cargo pants, load-bearing vest, pepper ball gun, you name it.

Truth be told, I worked “unarmed” security part-time in the late-90s to 2001. Mostly truck terminals, but I did raid the kitchen for yogurt at a hotel and suites that was about to open. My buddy was usually my relief and he’d simply do some round to make sure everything was locked and then go take a nap in one of the rooms. Even as a certified unarmed guard at age 18, I kept a shotgun in my car and sometimes a .38 on my person, along with an ASP baton and pepper spray. $5.25/hour at the first job, then in 2001 I became one of those “goddamned Pinkertons: Long Riders (Walter Hill, 1980) (youtube.com), making :7.25/hour guarding truck terminals and a Hewlitt-Packard facility. The interesting thing was that my full-time job had the contract at the same facility, so I’d be there in my mechanic’s uniform working on forklifts during the day on occasion and be back in a security guard uniform at night.

Nothing pertinent to the stories besides to say that as much as cops have to deal with, security has it worse these days. Very limited (if any) powers of arrest, little respect, using deadly force is a combination of personal and corporate liability, and training is even more minimal than what police receive. I briefly explored doing the armored car thing, but don’t think any job where I have to carry a gun is wise in 2023.

I worked private security in downtown Houston, day and night shifts, for 10+ years.
Fortunately, the company I worked for started out hiring only those with some college experience, and that was still predominantly the case at the end.
We “promoted” to carrying nightsticks (batons) sometime in there, but had to be certified to Texas standards – which included handgun and shotgun “proficiency”, and take a one-day course on baton use.
Some of us also were paid to get EMT-B certification as well.

Pay was low, but because the company was a subsidiary of one of the major developers of highrise buildings in Houston there were paid vacations and, best of off to a father of 3 youngsters, full medical coverage.

Respect for the officers was, as to be expected, low. Most of the LEOs were respectful, but we were well aware of our position in the hierarchy.

Still, we were first contact for a few scumbags (a government housing project is just right across I-45 from our territory), One of my buddies (6’4″ 300#) was jumped by a couple of teen punks once – lack of situational awareness on his part.
Further east toward Main street and beyond was not a place to be a white boy after 11:00p.m. but I never got jumped staying aware and carrying the stick.

Security guards who are trying to do a good job have my respect. Wannabes exist in all areas, but there are good ones too.

Hope this guard gets through ok.

One has to wonder if Senor Lopez had of been a Gurkha with a Kukri if he mighta survived his stupidity? Or if he hadn’t been drunk and stupid at the same time?

A taser shot is just an attention getter. “…shot him multiple times.” Shoulda shot him at least once more…you know…a TPSS.

Box cutter is just a flat skinny knife?

A Gurkha isn’t afraid of dying, and he’s taking you with him.

A kinda feel-good:
Getting out of prison yesterday, found a lot of flashing lights and a life-flight helicopter on scene.

Some inmate had started a fight, and a CO, (I believe) ended it rather forcefully. His head was somewhat swole up according to one report.

FAFO even in prison.

I was at the mall parking lot when I witnessed the punk rabbit punch the teenage girl. By the time I got to the girl, the punk was punching other people. “How do you like getting beat-up by a teenager?” the punk yelled at everyone he punched. I looked him in the eyes and told him to knock it off, then I told the other guy who was squaring up to fight him to knock it off. Just then, a car with the punk’s buddies shows up; he gets into the car and they speed off. Another old man provides first aid to the teenage girl. It was then the mall cops show up and tell everyone they’ll not have that behavior on the property.

I just walked away, listening while the other shoppers laughed at the mall cops.

The lesson is, “If you’re going to have security, have trained security.”
