Day of Infamy
USS Arizona Memorial
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
Just before 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor where they sank or damaged nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan.
Each year on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Survivors, veterans, and visitors from all over the world come together to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the Day of Infamy.

Thanks Ed. I knew there was something about this date when
I went to the PO to pick up my mail. Then I went to the bank
to deposit some checks but something still did not seem right.
Nice day with people going about their business but still this
feeling that something was missing.
Did not see anything in the news and on line was all about
Taylor Swift.
My desk calendar shows Hanukkah beginning at sunset but
nothing about a Day of Infamy. I’ll check the 2024 calendar
to see if they corrected the error.
As the son of one of the Greatest Generation and the son-in-law of one, I need no reminder🇺🇸 Never Forget🇺🇸
I’ll be damned. Nothing showing on my calendar, local news had a short piece about U of A ROTC holding a ceremony this morning. Concur with BlueCord Dad, I too am a son of the Greatest Generation, I need no reminder of the day.
Not the son of one, but the Grandson of a European Theater Soldier, that landed in Africa during Operation Torch and worked his way all the way to Germany. He spent 3 birthdays overseas. I always thought of him and his war when I would have to deploy for a year or so. My dad was out of the picture when I was in kindergarten, so all I learned of being a man came from this great gentleman. Honest, Hardworking and kind. He passed away in 2012 while I was unfortunately in Afghanistan. That group of vets will soon be gone forever. I share his stories often, and my son carries his name.
Thank You.
Are there any Pearl Harbor Survivors remaining above ground?
Or have they all gone to meet their shipmates at the Great Rest?
Damned onion fairies…
According to Fox News there are 6 survivors remaining who will attend the ceremony at PH. One of them, Ira Schab, is 103 yrs old.
And next year, there most likely will not be any mention made about this date.
The sad part is, the young people working in hardware stores, fast food, whatever jobs today have not a clue about those that died that day were their age at the time.
The Greatest Generation.
Always remember, never forget.
I knew that one of the usual suspects would make a post about today. No surprise that it was our very own Beloved AW1Ed, The Kid Squid (ht2 Ol’ Poe) of Naval Aviation/Rescue Swimmer Fame. I needed no reminder of this day, not because it is noted on my local newspaper’s free calendar as “Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day” per se but for other, more personal reasons. Like other OK Boomers here, my Pappy and Uncles served in WWII, Pop, US Army Artillery, ETO, his brother US Army Inf, Pacific Theater. A man I much respected in my teen years was Pearl Harbor Survivor Mr. Fred Johnson, our High School Principle. Linkys on Mr. Fred are below. This week The Gun Bunny will also celebrate Saint Barbara’s Day (4 Dec), with the Festival of our Patron Saint being held tomorrow night at Firebase Magnolia. Will also celebrate the Birthday of a Lady Friend and the purchase of Firebase Magnolia on 8 Dec ’06. All of those festivities will lead up to THE party of the year when my compatriots will gather to watch (GO) Army take on (BEAT) Navy in the only gridiron competition that means anything.
The Story TeeVee Channel has been running various programs on the Day of Infamy all morning. Lots of original film footage and interviews with folks that were there. Never forget that America has and will be attacked with little or no notice and we must PREPARE for that, be it by foreign or domestic enemies.

Thank you for the remembrance. Never forgotten.
I ain’t sayin’ nothing but it’s my Chairforce Birthday. December 7th 1983. Every other even year it was my pay date/raise anniversary. Got DAMN it doesn’t seem that long ago AND to boot, my (approximately) same date 10 years later for NASA. That TOO even more so, doesn’t seem that long ago when I started but the wrinkles, aches and pains and level of institutional expereince say otherwise.
Cheers
Welp, ’bout time you showed up. Now, Hie thyself (that’s yanky talk for “get yore happy ass over yonder”) to the Purple Heartbreak Thread. Y’all ain’t got time for no party, celebratory or pity, you gots work to do. There has been a motion, a SECOND, a KA-BOOM (unofficial AYE), an AYE, several calls for chips/cheapcheaps, and endorsements there of for a Deployment of the TAH As(s)teroid of Insults. Get cracking you wing wiping, no FIRST Earning, love sick for OAM puppy and earn yore keep. ps don’t go all moonie for the FNG (Foxy New Girl).
Thanks for the heads up….I am about 4 or 5 days behind in my reading….
I’ll get to it shortly!
WHAT FNG? WHAR!?!?! I’m on it.
KoB King of my BACKSIDE!!! 😀 (joshin’ is all!)
Read the attached linky on the thread. If you can’t find what Imma talking about, I’ll loan you two (2) hands, a map, and a flashlight.
Why am I getting a mental image of a map reading army lieutenant getting stuck in a fence….
Or even without the fence.
Wow…
(Hoplessly disoriented by NTC) “If you’re so smart PFC, show me!” Flings map.
(Quickly does)
(Drives jeep to objective in silence)
(As approaching CP) “Stop.” …… “is there any need to discuss thus further?”
“No sir.”
“Fine. Drive.”
(Deadpan face)
Most of those who remember this day in 1941 have passed on, while nearly all of those who experienced it firsthand, and the World War it caused us to enter, are gone.
My the world has changed. These days there would be a call for a ceasefire immediately after. There would be a lot of discussion about how the Japanese empire has a point about something. Oh it was actually the United States fault for getting in their way of expansion.
AmeriKKKa incited the poor “oppressed” Japanese– boo hoo, etc. (and other left/libtard whining)…
P.S. /sarc (for those who missed it)
Mostly peaceful fly-by?
Pretty much… just “part of their culture” and we shouldn’t be “judgmental,” you know. /sarc
Before I was born, My Dad went into the National Guard some time before the draft was started in Sept of 1940 and in August of 1940, the Pres. had the National Guard go into active service and Pop wound up in Coast Arty. I was born in Nov. of 1945 3 months after the hostilities stopped. Pop and Future mom were in the movie theater on Sunday Dec 1941 when the shit hit the fan and Future Mom’s Pop came into the theater and told Pop what had happened which ended the date and back to his base went Pop.
I commented on another blog that this is “Bluto’s Ignorance Day” and it is a sad comment on present day college students, and a few college presidents, too.
Yeah, especially since Bluto was a character in a movie. Said character being a HEAVY drinker.
But, of course!
When policing up the desert of NTC, I found an empty clip from a Garand. Presumptively, it was there since the 40s. Forgot who I gave it to. They went nuts over it.
So cool.
Whut’s the big deal about 12/7? According to all the Progs, J/6/2021 was much “worser”. Cuz it was a direct threat to “our democracy,” since Trump is worse than Hitler and Tojo combined.
