Intel weenie attempts to spy for China
A former buck sergeant intel guy from Joint Base Lewis McChord (JLBM) name of Joseph Daniel Schmidt has been busted attempting to recruit himself into spying for the Chinese.
Federal agents took 29-year-old Joseph Daniel Schmidt into custody at the San Francisco airport this morning (October 6 – ed.), officials said. He faces one count of trying to deliver national defense information and one count of retention of national defense information.
Court papers say Schmidt served in the U.S. Army from 2015 to 2020, primarily with the 109th Military Intelligence Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. He held a top secret security clearance, had studied Mandarin and worked as a team leader in spying operations.
Those efforts began, court papers say, just over a month after Schmidt left the military when he traveled to Istanbul, Turkey. Investigators say his internet search history at the time includes searches for how to defect, including searching “countries that dont extradite” and “can you be extradited for treason.”
According to court papers, Schmidt introduces himself, explains that he has a top secret U.S. government security clearance and experience in surveillance detection and running spies. He allegedly offers to share his knowledge with the Chinese government, and asks for a face-to-face meeting.
Court papers say Schmidt has remained in China, primarily in Hong Kong, since 2020, and has continued to try to provide sensitive U.S. government information to Chinese authorities.
This week, officials say, he booked a flight to San Francisco, where he was arrested by federal agents at the airport. NPR
While in China, Schmidt allegedly created other documents detailing US Army intelligence practices over training, intelligence collection, interrogations methods as well as a hand-drawn diagram of an Army computer network.
The former Army sergeant allegedly contacted Chinese companies run by the government there to advertise his services and access to sensitive material. In one such email, Schmidt allegedly wanted to “reverse engineer” an encryption key used to access a classified network in the Army “to give to the Chinese government.”
He allegedly wrote in an email to an associate that he was motivated to leave the US after learning “some terrible things about the American government” while serving in the Army. CNN
An E-5 first-termer is probably privy to all sorts of state secrets, huh. And I’m sure he is well trained in all kinds of expert techniques the Chinese have never thought of. I wonder where in covert intel school he was taught to do open Internet searches with incriminating terms, or directly e-mailing a hostile intelligence service. “Lookee MEEE!!” seems more descriptive.
Usually one of the first questions which should be asked is, if they took him, “what did he have that they wanted”? In this case they seem to have neither taken him nor thrown him back. Not sure what that says?

If you’re going to betray your country because they did terrible things, going to China makes the most sense because they have never done anything terrible. There are as clean as a baby’s bottom and innocent as the day is long.
Indeed the logic fail is massive here….which probably explains why he thought flying to San Fran would go unnoticed….I’m guessing he didn’t graduate near the top of his class….call it a hunch.
He was a just a functionary paper pusher. The reason the “really good stuff” is compartmentalized, so assholes like this never get the full picture. I hope enjoys Federal pound-me-in-the-ass-prison
After he serves his time there, ship him off to China so he can join the Uyghurs in doing slave labor.
Nike needs the help. Gotta make more shoes to pay for Colon Kaepernick’s victimhood.
It appears that he tried to sell himself and no one was buying, like a one-legged, buck-toothed, bald headed hooker.
My Internet searches focus on chubby Indian gals so ….
I’ve said too much; I’ll see myself out.
So you’re saying you get a chubby doing internet searches on Indian gals? Do you prefer feather or dot?
Home boi may find himself a chubby in the federal pen. Didn’t he know that the only way you can do business with the ChiComs is to be an artist? Or a US Senator? Dumbass!
I remember during Out-Proccessing one element was a debrief informing me “no travel to communist” countries, specifically calling out it included over-flight of Cuba (and trying to go to Berlin, showing my age 🙂 )….The implication was it would be monitored……
Jerry (Buck SGT/E-4 Mafia)….
Jerry, you are showing your age. Now they don’t forbid you from going there, since they are monitoring all your media anyway. That way if a really big fish bites they can reel them in!
Obviously with this one, the minnow kept wiggling and no-one bit!
Clown-O.
Needs to change his name to Full Retard.
I’m sure that schematic of the network was really detailed with all the nodes and encryption. This guy must have been the type that liked to trace the wall with his finger if he was reverse engineering an encryption key!
Combining HUMINTers and SIGINTers in the same unit must have really rubbed off on him he is a code breaker and a spy master!
Amazing our country is finally taking this seriously
I’ve been screaming about it since 2009 after multiple odd incidents
In Iraq and back home in Nevada USA. My leadership
Warned me then about coming off as racists
Told a asshole AF O-6 they were asleep at the wheel
Long story short
I WAS RIGHT
😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
“…..attempting to recruit himself…..”
I think that sez it all right there.
Joe Schmidtt the Bagman
So even the Chinese didn’t want him, poor little jailhouse bitch – NOT! I’m sure that Bubba, Thor and Company will straighten his ass out while he’s in lockup, ya-knowhutimean?
He sure will.
There is only one treatment for traitors. It rhymes with nope.
And it sounds like “GRRRK”
