Weekend Open Thread
I asked Bing’s AI image creator to provide a picture of Fat Leonard surrounded by Navy officers. One of the results showed someone, featured on this site in the last decade, who was alleged to have eaten 7 pounds of cheese in one night. I previously tried to use the image creator to recreate his “doc” photo, but the only results that came back looked like a portrait of someone living in one of the Middle East countries. Enjoy your weekend!

Been busting my ass for eight hours trying to catch up after being on vacation for four or five days and I’m hammered so I wasn’t even gonna try today but I just thought I’d check in at 3 o’clock and I am early.
Eat my shorts bunch of turds.
Love you and I’ll be hanging around
Chip – that “Eat my shorts” had me rolling in laughter at a memory. When my kiddo turned two, my sibling got him a Bart Simpson doll with a pull string. That was one of the phrases it said, which the sibling thought was hilarious … because the kiddo was speaking in full sentences by then and immediately repeated the phrase.
Bart was the second toy with a voice-box-ectomy, the first being an obnoxious bear. Couldn’t just take batteries out because by 2, he knew and would just come to me for more.
KA-BOOM!
CONGRATS To Our Favorite King Of Battle!

Tanks, ninja! Just got lucky, I guess. No, that’s not true. I used all of the skilz, agility, and analytical planning of a Professional to achieve my mission. My Queen of Battle, Roh-Dog did help with his covering fire against the 26 leaden soldiers of My Man CW. Hack Stone being deployed in his never ending quest for the missing Elaine has kept him out of the way and poor ol’ Chippy is exhausted from his chase of the affections he desires of OAM. All in all…? Easy peasy for this Smooth Operator.
The dastardly cable whores have blocked me from watching the “Good Games” on tomorrow upcoming. May and or may not catch our Black Knights, it’s on CBS Sports Net. Dawgs is SECN, Tide & ‘Noles are ESPN. It’s all good, I gots some TAD and Escort Duty coming up next week that will take me away from Firebase Magnolia and there are certain details to take care of before then.
If your comms are back up and in a receive mode, send me a ping to my @outlook addy. In the meantime…

DID YOU KNOW…?
Did President Richard Nixon suggest a play to one of the coaches in a Super Bowl?
By Commissioner Wretched
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com
When we are kids, we never, ever think of being old. Never. Our grandparents are old people. So are our great-grandparents.
Now I join that group of people that kids think are old … I have a milestone birthday coming up. My 65th.
As I have said before, if I’d known I was going to live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself.
But since I didn’t, you’re stuck with what’s here. And what’s here brings you your weekly trivia fix.
So enjoy, my friends, enjoy!
Did you know …
… you may be an illeist? If you are, you’re in pretty good company – folks like Julius Caesar (100 BC-44 BC), Salvador Dali (1904-1989), and Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970) were illeists. An illeist is someone who habitually refers to him- or herself in the third person. (The Commissioner doesn’t think that’s such a bad thing, he doesn’t.)
… that thing you have to click when visiting a website to prove you’re human has a name? It’s called a Captcha. That’s an acronym, by the way. It means (take a deep breath now) Completely Automated Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. (Whew!)
… at one time, you could have won a replica of the house shown on The Simpsons? In 1997, viewers of the popular animated show were given a chance to win a replica of the family home which had been built in Henderson, Nevada. The winner would have gotten a house in the accurate animation colors and even with a refrigerator full of the fictional Duff Beer. The person who won the contest, Barbara Howard (1934-2015) of Richmond, Kentucky, opted to take the $75,000 cash prize instead. A few years later, the house was repainted in different colors and sold – but people keep stopping by to see it, and even peer into the windows to see if Homer Simpson is home. (If Duff Beer is fictional, how did they come up with a refrigerator full of it? Never mind, I don’t want to know.)
… presidents are lousy football coaches? Okay, that’s a generalization, but hear me out. During Super Bowl VI in 1972, the Miami Dolphins took on the Dallas Cowboys. At 1:30 a.m. a few days before the game, the coach of the Dolphins, Don Shula (1930-2020), received a call from President Richard Nixon (1913-1994). Nixon called to suggest the coach try a down-and-out pattern against the Cowboys, and Shula agreed it might work. It was 1:30 in the morning; he probably would have agreed to anything at that point. But when the Dolphins tried the play during the game, it didn’t work, as it was deflected for an incomplete pass. It probably wouldn’t have helped anyway, as the Cowboys defeated the Dolphins 24-3. Nixon’s record as a play-caller was actually 0-2, as a call a couple of weeks earlier to Washington Redskins coach George Allen (1918-1990) to suggest a play in their playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers also ended up not working, and the Redskins lost 24-20. (“I am not a crook! Nor am I a good football coach!”)
Tricky Dick should have stuck to the “gimmick” plays.
They sell Duff Beer at Moe’s Beer Garden as well as Moe’s Tavern at the Springfield part of universal Studios theme park in Orlando!
President Nixon did a good job with the VN war that he was handed. Got them to the peace talk table and got it done. Got our POW’s and troops out of there with honor. Pretty good play by my book.
Except that Kissinger let the Commie bastards keep several hundred of our POWs held in Laos.
Not sticking up for Kissinger. I once commented to an WW2 vet uncle that democrats did not know how to wield power. He said “what about Rosevelt”. I replied “l was speaking about in my lifetime”.
… the canned food industry began as a result of Napoleon? Because the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) believed that “an army marches on its stomach,” he offered a prize in 1795 for a practical way of preserving food. Taking up the challenge, inventor Nicolas Appert (1749-1841) devised a method of airtight food preservation which we know today as canning. Appert won the emperor’s prize, and his work began the canned food industry as we know it.
… a gigayear is one trillion years? To put it into perspective, scientists tell us that it’s only been 14 billion years since the Big Bang that, they think, created the Universe. So a gigayear hasn’t happened yet. (Now that’s probably the most useless thing you’ll learn this week.)
… depressed people dream more? Scientists have learned that depression causes a person to dream three to four times more than normal. (And the dreams! The dreams!)
… a French mathematician’s beliefs about health brought about his death? Joseph Fourier (1768-1830) believed that wrapping a blanket around his body was good for his health. It might have been, but in May of 1830 he tripped on the blanket and fell down a flight of stairs, causing internal injuries from which he died two weeks later. (The inspiration for Linus van Pelt, I think.)
The rub was the can opener wasn’t invented until about 80 years later. I hatchet or knife had to be used.
… the lion is the national animal of eight nations? Those nations are Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, England, Ethiopia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Singapore. (Hey, I’m not “lion” about that.)
… the placement of a donkey’s eyes in its head allow it to see all four of its feet at the same time? (Nothing else, just all four of its feet.)
… penguins have a rather cold-hearted way of making sure there are no predators in their waters? They will push other penguins into the water to check. If the pushed penguin doesn’t get eaten, then there are no predators. (Sometimes it’s your best friends, you know.)
… the four spikes on the end of the tail of the dinosaur Stegosaurus have a name? Stegosaurus, which lived between 163 million years ago and 100 million years ago, was a pretty big dinosaur – it stood between 6.6 and 9.7 feet high, measured between 15 feet and 28 feet long, and had a long series of pairs of bony plates sticking out of its back. But at the end of its tail appeared four long, sharp spikes, which it used as a weapon against any other dinosaur silly enough to try and attack it. Paleontologists call those spikes the “thagomizer.” The name comes from a 1982 Far Side cartoon by Gary Larson (born 1950). (This one’s silly enough without help from me. And thanks to Ed for the item!)
Now … you know!
Named for the late Thag Simmons, I believe!
CW, compared to some of us jen you wine old farts, you’re still a whipper snapper…but we do lubs the way you whip out the snappy trivia. How Embarassing…And Sad.
All because of one Military Phony who went to his Grave with his lies of being a Silver Star recipient as well as a Vietnam Boots On The Ground Veteran when he never was in Vietnam. He did this via an Oral report which has now been taken down.
The Bong Center of Superior, Wisconsin learned a huge lesson because of this Phony. They are now requiring proof of veteran status (a DD214) for participation in every program, from donated items and event speakers to volunteers and tile applications.
Here is the story. Other additions to the story will be linked with this STOLEN VALOR story.
“Bong Center Staff Confront Stolen Valor Incident”
“An Email, An Expert And A Piece Of Paper Helped Unravel A False Vietnam Tale.”
https://www.superiortelegram.com/news/local/bong-center-staff-confront-stolen-valor-incident
“A lie that left shock and sadness at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center has resulted in a new policy requiring proof of military service for every program, donation, display and volunteer.”
“It started with good intentions.”
“The community turned out to remember naval veteran Dan Knight at a Flag of Remembrance ceremony July 7 at the center. Members of the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435 also held a Missing Man ceremony for him.”
“That’s special. We don’t do that for everybody. That’s usually just for members of our honor guard,” said Post Commander Butch Liebaert.”
“Knight reportedly saved the life of a Marine in the Vietnam War and earned the Silver Star, the third-highest military combat decoration, for his bravery. His heroic oral history was recorded at the center in 2011 under a previous director and sent to the National Archives.”
“He was also a former commander of the American Legion post and a longtime volunteer with the center who even got married there. Center staff said they wanted to honor the veteran, who had no one to provide end-of-life services.”

“Why wouldn’t you step up and do the right thing?” asked Katie Marturano, the Bong Center’s marketing and events coordinator.”
“Over the next two months, an email, an expert, and a crucial piece of paper unraveled Knight’s story of heroism, revealing instead a tale of stolen valor.”
“This was a person who was never in Vietnam saying he was there,” said Briana Fiandt, curator of collections and exhibits with the center.”
“Alot of people have had to take a moment and kind of swallow the hard pill,” Marturano said.”
“Shortly after the ceremony, Bob Barnett, chairman of the Swift Boat Sailors Association, emailed the center asking for a copy of Knight’s DD214, or military discharge paperwork. When Fiandt looked in the oral history file — where a copy should be — it wasn’t there. That opened a back-and-forth dialog.”
“And they started telling me all of the reasons why they thought he was lying,” Fiandt said, based on inaccuracies veterans who had been in Vietnam could point out.”
“Center staff and volunteers were shocked.”
“I figured there’s no way that he could not have been in Vietnam,” said Bob Hoyt, a Vietnam veteran who volunteered at the center with Knight for four years.”
“Hoyt, of Duluth, has taken many oral histories at the center. He studies up before the interview to make sure it’s accurate.”
“Civilians don’t normally have this type of information in your head, whereas those that served in the military do, right, and it’s just a couple of quick questions you can ask, and then you know if the guy’s lying,” Hoyt said.”
“He listened to Knight’s oral history and found inconsistencies between the recording and the stories Knight told him when they sat at the volunteer desk. A Navy payroll dispersing clerk who was stationed in Saigon, Hoyt had experience with Swift Boats, river patrol boats (PBRs) and military procedures to catch additional red flags and some “absolute baloney” in Knight’s oral history.”
*Continue*
*Continue*
“I felt really, really, really sad when I finally realized that, that Dan was lying to all of us,” Hoyt said.”
“Knight’s DD214, received from the Douglas County Veterans Service Office, confirmed that Knight served in the Navy in the Mediterranean from 1965 to 1969, Fiandt said. He served on the USS Fremont, according to the paperwork.”
“For us veterans, faking serious wartime injuries to gain undeserved benefits and claiming valor is kind of a disservice to our brave veterans and service members who risk their lives every day protecting this country,” Barnett said.”
“It is also a federal crime if a person’s false claims allow them to receive money, property or other tangible benefit, according to the Stolen Valor Act of 2013.”
“When Barnett sent a letter Aug. 9 asking for Knight’s oral history to be removed and that news outlets who ran the story to retract it, Fiandt said she could feel the pain behind the words.”
“This is the story Dan stole, their story is the one he stole, and I want to make it up to them. I guess that’s why I don’t want a little retraction in the corner. I want to make it up to them and show them that we honor their sacrifice,” Fiandt said.”
“The incident led to a new written policy at the Bong Center requiring proof of veteran status (a DD214) for participation in every program, from donated items and event speakers to volunteers and tile applications. The policy was approved by the nonprofit’s board of directors in late August.”
“Now we’re going to do everything we can to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Marturano said.”
“They also want to share their experience, to prevent it from happening elsewhere.”
“Maybe we need to shed some light on this … it is unfathomable, so you don’t think about it until it happens,” Marturano said.”
*Continue*
*Continue*
“Fiandt said she reached out to other organizations, including the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum, to look at other policies before drafting one for the center.”
“I never found one,” she said.”
“Doug Thompson, curator of the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum at Camp Ripley in Little Falls, Minnesota, said they don’t deal with stolen valor instances often. They always ask for documentation of awards and discharge certificates, he said, and red flags come up when veterans get evasive.”
“I think doing due diligence can weed out a lot of people,” he said.”
It’s “institutionally ingrained” in the current staff to get that information and there are safeguards in place, he said, but the museum doesn’t have a formal policy codified in its collections manual.”
“It’s actually probably a pretty good idea to put something like that in writing,” Thompson said. “I think it’s something that we might probably entertain the idea of creating for ourselves.”
“Roughly $500 was raised during the July 7 tribute to assist in future cases of honoring veterans who don’t have end-of-life services. Fiandt said they plan to contact people who sent checks to see if they would like the funds returned. The rest will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.”

“American Legion And Bong Museum Team Up To Give Final Honors To Silver Star Recipient”
https://www.northernnewsnow.com/202
3/07/12/american-legion-bong-museum-team-up-give-final-honors-silver-star-recipient/?outputType=amp
“Dan Knight served on swift boats during the Vietnam War. He earned a Silver Star for rescuing Marines under fire. He also earned several Purple Hearts and the last one sent him home in a coma. Upon recovering, he went back to duty and served the Navy for decades to come. Knight passed away recently with no family left to arrange services. So, the Superior American Legion and the Richard Bong Center stepped in.”
“Everyone deserves that final honor especially everyone who’s been in the service.” said Ryan Jost, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and current American Legion member.”
“The American Legion and the Bong put on a Flag of Remembrance and Missing Man ceremony for Knight last week. After retiring from the Navy, Dan served in the American Legion and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.”
“I was just glad today to come for the Missing Man ceremony for our friend Dan Knight who I served with a few times on the Coast Guard Auxiliary boat.” said retired Coast Guard Chief Tom Erickson who has served the USCG as an active duty Coastie, a Coast Guard civilian employee and as an Auxiliary member.”
“The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center says these tributes are an important part of their mission.”

“Superior Veteran Honored With Flag Ceremony”
“Dan Knight Served In The Navy During The Vietnam War.”
https://www.superiortelegram.com/news/local/superior-veteran-honored-with-flag-ceremony
“The American Legion Post 435 and the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center will be hosting a special Flag of Remembrance and Missing Man ceremony Friday, July 7 for Dan Knight, who died in May 2023. The ceremony will take place outside the museum at 9 a.m. to remember and honor Knight. Community members are invited to attend.”
“Knight was born in Chicago in 1947 and grew up in the south side neighborhoods. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy directly out of high school in 1965 and served on the USS Fremont, according to official paperwork. He was released from active duty in 1969.”
“Knight later moved to Superior. In his retirement, he was involved in community service.”
“Knight was a former commander of the Richard I Bong American Legion Post 435, a longtime volunteer at the Bong Center, and part of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was very proud of his service and both the legion and the museum held a very special place in his heart. So much so that when he and girlfriend Judy Felien decided to get married on March 17, 2007, they chose to say their vows in the museum’s exhibit gallery.”
“Knight’s wife, Judy Felien-Knight, died in 2021, leaving him with no one to organize a funeral or memorial service. His Bong Center and American Legion family have stepped in to remember Knight with the ceremony July 7.”
“A drive-by donation opportunity will also take place from 10 a.m. to noon in front of the Bong Center following the ceremony. Simply drive into the Bong Center parking lot donation station and donate in honor of the memory of veteran Dan Knight.”
“Help us make his memory stronger than his ending and recognize him with all the support a family could give.”

“Members of the auxiliary are unpaid assistants who help with the Coast Guard’s civil missions. These include vessel examinations, safe boating classes, anti-pollution and safety patrols, port security, and search and rescue.”

“New Policy Requires Proof Of Military Service At Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center”
https://ticker.tv/news/bong-center-staff-confront-stolen-valor-incident/38396/
“The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior, Wisconsin, has implemented a new policy that requires proof of military service for every program, donation, display, and volunteer. This policy comes in response to a recent incident involving a veteran who falsely claimed to have served in Vietnam.”
“The story began with the commemoration of naval veteran Dan Knight at a Flag of Remembrance ceremony held at the center on July 7. Knight was recognized for his alleged heroic actions during the Vietnam War, where he reportedly saved the life of a Marine and earned the Silver Star for bravery. However, further investigation revealed that Knight had never served in Vietnam and had fabricated his military service history.”
“The discovery of Knight’s stolen valor shocked and saddened the community and the staff at the Bong Center. Previously, Knight’s oral history had been recorded at the center in 2011 and sent to the National Archives. He was also a former commander of the American Legion post and a dedicated volunteer at the center.”
“Following this incident, the center has now implemented a policy requiring individuals to provide proof of military service for any involvement with programs, donations, displays, or volunteering. This policy aims to prevent future instances of stolen valor and ensure that those being honored or recognized have truly served in the military.”
Not directly related, but it made me really look into this guy and area, and the namesake…

FIRST THIRTY on the WOT
Present and accounted for.
Why do these peeps like Knight lie to embelish their Mil. service. I was 17and still a kid when I boarded the USS Okinawa in 1963. I volunteered for Swift Boats when they started to need need crew members for these boats. I put in a request to join the Swift Boats and the next thing I knew, Gunners Mate 1st class Smitty gets a hold of me and says to me. Kid, I don’t think this transfer is for you. I was a Screw up but eventualy got AJ Squared away making MM 3. I never made up any stories like the sailor who went into A Div. where I was but in 1967 he came aboard the ship and tried to get on the Swift Boats while the ship was over in Viet-Nam. He recently wrote a book about himself being a Navy Seal. This was mentioned o TAH awhile ago. I was a Kiddy Cruiser from 1963-1966 and I got off of the LPH 3 in Nov. Of 1966 before she changed home ports to San Diego. Did a couple of years in the inactive Navy Reserve in Queens NYC. No BS or embelishment for me.
Jeff, the reason you don’t lie or embellish your time in the Navy is because you were never a “Screwup”.
You don’t have anything to hide, i.e. kicked out of the service, nonjudicial punishments for insubordination, AWOL, etc.
You are very secure in your own skin.
We really appreciate you sharing your Navy and ARNG stories with us, Jeff. You are very down to earth, humble and never call attention to yourself (“Look At Me!”).
Plus, you are great on Puns…Keep Em Coming!
Thank You, Jeff!

[A Lebanon County man has been found guilty of charges related to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Leo Bozell IV, 44, of Palmyra, was convicted Friday on 10 charges, including five felonies.
Investigators said Bozell – led the crowd, barreling through two police lines. He also smashed the glass of a Senate wing door windowpane and window, allowing the mob to climb into the building.
He was videotaped ransacking the Capitol, including the office of then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Bozell was also captured on video on the balcony of the U.S. Senate Chamber.]

BTW – IF you are a fan of “media transparency” pundit Brent Bozell,
this is his SON.
IRONY – After days of public rants at the left on Fox and elsewhere,
now all of a sudden,
Brent Bozell has NO COMMENT on his own son.
Sentencing for Leo Brent Bozell IV in 4 months, January 2024.
