Gitmo Alum news
Fox News reports this morning that Hungary has volunteered to accept one graduate from the Guantanamo Intensive Learning Center;
Bajnai said Hungary would choose from a short list of Guantanamo prisoners in the coming days and that he would participate in an 18-month integration program.
“According to our current expectations … the chosen candidate will be a Palestinian man who will be able to start a new life in Hungary,” Bajnai told reporters.
“I ask my fellow citizens to consider the difficult circumstances in which the detainee spent his latest years and help his future integration.”
This news comes on the heels of yet another Gitmo alumni who was arrested on the Pakistan border with his shiny new Swedish citizenship. (Washington Times link)
Dera Ghazi Khan police Chief Mohammad Rizwan told the Associated Press that authorities made the identification after interrogating the man, Mehdi-Muhammed Ghezali. A copy of his Swedish passport obtained by the AP showed that his face matched that of previously published photos of the man held at Guantanamo.
“I do confirm that he is the same person. He is a very dangerous man,” Chief Rizwan said.
Ghezali was arrested on the outskirts of Dera Ghazi Khan, a southern Pakistani town, on Aug. 28 along with a group of foreigners including seven Turks and three other Swedes who lacked proper immigration stamps.
So, apparently, our “catch-and-release program” isn’t working. In the meantime, a DC District court is determining the merits of the government’s case against a detainee – they voted to close arguments to the public yesterday.
