Afghanistan withdrawal report not about accountability, but it’s Donald Trump’s fault

The White House released a report about the Afghanistan withdrawal while insisting that the report was not about accountability. The report appeared to not indicate any faults that Joe Biden may have had in plannings related to the evacuation. However, the report appears to shift some blame to Donald Trump’s administration. The Trump Administration apparently placed constrictions on the evacuation.

From Fox News:

Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy pressed Kirby on the report, which admitted the intelligence surrounding the situation in Afghanistan was inaccurate, and asked who from the administration would be fired over the failures and whether President Biden could trust the information given to him in his future daily briefings.

“The purpose of the document that we’re putting out today is to sort of collate the chief reviews and findings of the agencies that did after action reviews. The purpose of it is not accountability. The purpose of it is to study lessons learned,” Kirby said, avoiding directly answering the question.

He went on to admit that certain pieces of intelligence “weren’t accurate,” but said the White House was trying to be honest with the American people about what shaped Biden’s decision-making on Afghanistan.

“This document and this effort isn’t about accountability today. It’s about understanding,” Kirby reiterated. “The review process isn’t over. This is the next muscle movement in what will be a long process to better understand and comprehend and adjust to what we learned and what we did in Afghanistan.”

Kirby was later asked by another reporter how the Trump administration was responsible for the “disorganized and chaotic” withdrawal from Afghanistan, specifically concerning the evacuation flights from the airport.

He responded by detailing the “hectic” process of setting up the airport for evacuations, but ultimately dismissed the notion that the evacuation was chaotic despite the estimated thousands of Americans and Afghan allies left behind.

Fox News has additional details at this link.

I saw Kirby’s comments like…
“There was not any chaos…”
“We didn’t leave millions of dollars’ worth of equipment…”
“We’re proud of what we did…”
Which shows the level of incompetence in The Biden Regime.

I liked seeing The MSM call him out for releasing the report 10 minutes before the briefing with a 3-day weekend coming.
The classic news dump at 4:50 on a Friday…
The Biden Regime is like a woman…
They never accept responsibility for their poor behavior.

Kirby was an Admiral at one time and he should know better. Now he is nothing more than a butt sucking zombie.

“Now he is nothing more than a butt sucking zombie.”

“Now”??
How do you think he made Admiral?

STSC(SW/SS)

I guess he was in training all along.

2 July – Bagram Air Base vacated by U.S. forces, making it more difficult to conduct evacuation operations. (One report suggested the Afghan commander was made aware of the U.S. leaving 2 hours after the base was abandoned.)

15 August – Biden held a press conference following the Kabul airport airlift, where he justified the reasons for withdrawing and affirmed his view that following through with leaving was the right decision.

19 August – U.S. air support remained, but only as a show of force. (No close air support.)

20 August – During a press conference, Biden stated the U.S. government did not know how many Americans were left behind, and affirmed he would bring Americans home.

26 August – 13 servicemembers died in a suicide attack at Kabul International Airport. In desperation, Afghani’s who were fleeing clung to landing gear of U.S. aircraft leaving the country. (<Not chaotic enough, I guess)

29 August – Biden photographed looking at his watch as the bodies of U.S. servicemembers are offloaded from transport aircraft at Dover AFB in Delaware.

30 August – As the last U.S. aircraft departed the country, Taliban soldiers entered the airport and declared victory. The following day, it was estimated that more than 800 Americans remained in Afghanistan.

“One report suggested the Afghan commander was made aware of the U.S. leaving 2 hours after the base was abandoned”

If true that the Afghan commander was so out of touch, that just tells us that those 20 years and thousands of lives were, indeed, a total waste.

timactual

“it was estimated that more than 800 Americans remained in Afghanistan.”

I thought it was “thousands”? And I am still waiting for someone to explain why I should worry about “Americans” who chose to live in Afghanistan.

Can’t argue with that. Stopped clock and all that. All the more shame on us.

I guess you know fuck all about how military planning works and since you don’t you should listen to this report because the people involved in it do know about military planning.

Umm,,,, I would have to say prove it, because it sure as hell doesn’t seem like they know anything about military planning either!

It was not a report dude. It was propaganda. Nothing more. And it still demonstrated that the fuckwit in charge and his minions didn’t have a clue what they were doing.

I actually know a lot about military planning. I even attended resident CGSC. I also know a lot about CYA. This is going to be the 2nd one for all the grown ups in the room.

timactual

I never had the benefit of any staff training, but I do know the difference between an administrative and a tactical operation, and the basics of a tactical withdrawal, which emphasizes the importance of at least trying to break contact with the enemy, ideally without them noticing. This puts me ahead of the military geniuses who actually carried out this operation.

Perhaps they do, but the execution of that withdrawal doesn’t show it.

Yeah, it sure fucking showed there, didn’t it, Lars?

Know the room. Suggesting some here don’t know about military planning is quite an assumption.

Commissar

It was the Trump administration’s fault. They entered into the withdrawal treaty with the Taliban and then refused to do anything to prepare for the withdrawal, including preventing the DoD and DoS from making any direct preparations or major planning decisions.

Anyone that has served in the military SHOULD know that whatever plan for a pullout that happens a few weeks from a new administration taking office SHOULD have been planned out, war-gamed, and ready to be implemented by the previous administration.

Planning cycles for a comprehensive withdrawal are months long, not weeks.

I know for fact some of you served long enough to know this to be true. Which means some people rejecting these findings are doing so in bad faith.

Roh-Dog

Maybe y’all should impeach him again?

Planning cycles for a comprehensive withdrawal are months long, not weeks.

So we’re pretending 01MAY21 from 20JAN21 isn’t “months”?

Well now,…

And Biden should have been well aware of the situation on the ground since he started getting daily briefs in November the year before. His administration was in charge starting January that year. A few weeks my ass. This tar-baby is all his. You are part of the same folks who exclusively blame Bush for 9/11…which also occurred at roughly the same point after the new President took office. The difference was that Kabul was supposed o be pre-planned, not a sneak attack.

Good grief son! I wonder if I should have went to UCB so that I too, could know every damn thing! In another comment I said that you have to accidentally get something right at some point. You have made a couple of comments in the past that were right, so my hypothesis stands true. But it looks you are back to getting all of your info from MSNBC and CNN. You do know that just because they say it, doesn’t mean that you have to believe it?

SFC D

He’s a walking, talking (although probably not at the same time) violation of the “stopped clock is right twice a day” theory.

SFC D

A former major such as yourself should know that it’s incredibly disingenuous to blame failure on a plan you didn’t follow. Was Trump’s plan better? We’ll never know because THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION SCRAPPED IT. There are two constants in the universe. One is Joe Biden’s incredible ability to fuck up and blame others. The second is your ability screech your fraudulent, misguided, and absolutely politically driven bullshit. Bad faith? Again, your mirror will reveal the true bad faith actor in the room.

Correct, the current admin dumped Trump’s plan so they could have their own done by (for?) the 9/11 20th Anniv.

Exactly what he said. I’ll add that Biden stated this multiple times as well. He then extended the time line and still did nothing.

Like you said it is a months long process and Biden was president for 7 months when this catastrophe unfolded. He had all the time in the world to make it happen.

The failure had mostly to do with Biden personally grossly underestimating the Taliban, Biden’s Team moving the withdraw base and generally inadequate support.

timactual

“Biden personally grossly underestimating the Taliban,”

He had plenty of company in his misundrestimating in the military and intelligence communities. Of course the constant assurances (to the public, also) by those communities that everything was just wonderful and the Afghan good guys were quite competent and reliable may have misled him just a teeny bit.

“Biden’s Team moving the withdraw base”

Show me.

timactual

Thank you for the link.

So by “Biden’s team” you mean the generals who advised him to close Bagram and work exclusively out of Kabul? I thought Biden was supposed to follow the expert military advice of the generals. I am having trouble understanding exactly what your point is.

Yeah, and military planning is supposed to be conditions based, and with an alternate plan, and should never be driven by a timeline

timactual

You are assuming any planning by the military was actually done. Judging by the comments here, any planning was done by Joe Biden, personally.

5JC

Some of it was, as above.

timactual

“should never be driven by a timeline”

That’s just not accurate. Plans are motivated by an objective. There are frequently time constraints associated with that objective.

timactual

“a plan you didn’t follow.”

Okay, I’ll bite.
What plan? Show me. And who, exactly, created that plan?

“THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION SCRAPPED IT.”

You know better. If there was an actual “plan” it was, at worst, archived, not scrapped. And there were probably plans (plural).

5JC

The plan was classified for obvious reasons so your request is denied.

SFC D

Bite away. Archived is probably a better term. And I’m sure there were multiple plans. There always are. I’m too cynical to believe that Biden would stick to any plans the Trump administration was working with. The plan that was executed consisted of “leave now, leave everything behind, including Americans. Declare the war is over, take a victory lap, blame Trump for anything that goes south”.

timactual

“The plan that was executed
“leave now, leave everything behind, including Americans. Declare the war is over, take a victory lap, blame Trump for anything that goes south” ”

Actually, that’s a plan I can live with. At least the “leave now, declare the war is over” part. I could even respect the person(s) who actually advocated that plan; honest, realistic, effective.

Commissar/Комиссар reminds me an awful lot like a LT that would go out of his way just to be saluted.

A Proud Infidel®™

One Unit I was in had one that seemed to think that the duty of EVERY EM was to look for Officers to salute, he lasted about seven months until he resigned his Commission, word had it he was going to get thrown out mainly because ALL of the NCOs around him said “FUCK IT” and let him stomp on his dick in front of the BC.

timactual

“refused to do anything to prepare for the withdrawal,”

First of all, read the damn document. Pay attention to the dates in the document(s). Then google a timeline of the withdrawal read about how the withdrawal process took place. Also, read about something called a “chain of command” and “staff functions” and try to figure out why we have a big, oddly shaped building full of military officers just across the river from the White House, and what they get paid for. Then look up “Central Command” and do a little research on what its function was/is, and how many highly trained ossifers it has on its ‘staff’ and what they spend their time doing. And so on down that “chain of command”.thing.

Trump, and even Biden, have the right to expect that when they give an order, withdrawing from Afghanistan in this case, the responsible subordinate line and staff ossifers in that “Chain of Command” do the jobs they are trained and paid for. In this case to develop and execute detailed plans, down to platoon level, to execute that order. In this case the CENTCOM commander and a few other links in the chain screwed the pooch. Big time. If Biden had any brains or balls he would have relieved a few of those links.

SFC D

Chain of command. The top of that chain is Biden, Joe, 1 ea. responsible for everything under his command, good or bad. Joe can’t cut any of those links out without admitting responsibility, and that ain’t happening.

timactual

“responsible for everything under his command”

Yeah, yeah, I know the drill. The ship runs aground, the Captain’s career is ruined. We both know, however, that being responsible for the screwup does not mean you caused the screwup. The problem is, if you do not remove the actual cause of the screwup, it will happen again no matter who is in charge.

Dude, next time, take Biden’s spank sock out of your mouth before you type.

I watched the clip of the exchange between Peter Doocy and Kirby a few times. It’s been brought up in the comments that planning an orderly withdrawal takes months…well, Biden was inaugurated in January, by which time we were already down to 2500 boots on the ground. You’d think that pulling out Americans and those who assisted us would have been a priority during that first half of 2021, you know, when our enlightened new Beloved Leader was stumbling around and muttering to cameras, but it obviously wasn’t. Which, of course, led to the fiasco at Kabul.
