For couples who file jointly for tax year 2023, the standard deduction increases to $27,700 up $1,800 from tax year 2022, the IRS announced. Single taxpayers and married people filing separately will see their the standard deduction rise to $13,850, up $900, and for heads of households, the standard deduction will be $20,800, up $1,400. Lady who does my taxes says she has yet to see anyone exceed the standard deduction since they brought the system in. $20-some grand in deductions is a LOT.
Evidently no longer content to flush public money down just any old toilet, the city of San Francisco is upping its toilet game and is prepared to spend up to $1.7 million to build a single commode in one neighborhood plaza.
San Francisco also has a history of overspending on seemingly mundane items. Last year, the city spent nearly a half-million dollars to develop new trash can prototypes because city leaders “weren’t happy with the look” of off-the-shelf cans. National Review via Yahoo

The NY Post says that several city council members have said that the mayor has been pressured by the White House NOT to declare a state of emergency over the border crisis, despite the objections of several council members, and allege that the White House wants to funnel FEMA funding to deal with it.
President Biden pressured Democratic El Paso mayor Oscar Leeser to avoid declaring a state of emergency over the influx of illegal immigrants arriving daily, despite several members of the local city council urging otherwise, the New York Post reports.
One councilwoman, Claudia Rodriguez, told the Post that Leeser “told me the White House asked him not to” declare a state of emergency for fear it would make Biden look bad. These sentiments were echoed by fellow Representative Veronica Escobar (D., Texas). during a September 27 council meeting. National Review via Yahoo
Also says that El Paso alone has sent roughly 9-14 buses of illegals north, with 10,000 illegals from there (That’s over 700 per bus, methinks someone is off!) ending up in New York or Chicago. Hey, DeSantis and Abbott: time to step up your game!

The WaPo reports on Yahoo that hundreds of former senior US officers have gone to work for various friendly (and not so friendly) foreign powers.
Australia’s government, for example, offered former senior US Navy officials more than $10 million for consulting deals. In Azerbaijan, one retired US Air Force general was offered a consulting job with a pay of $5,000 a day.
In comparison, an active four-star general with more than two decades of experience receives up to $203,698 a year in basic pay, according to The Post.
Saudi Arabia, which has been repeatedly accused of human rights violations, has hired at least 15 retired US generals and admirals as consultants for the country’s Defense Ministry, The Post reported.

So, the mayor refuses to declare an emergency, but the Fed Emergency Management Agency is already providing the benefit to the mayor’s city of busing hundreds of illegals to NYC daily. Looks like he doesn’t need to make the declaration.

My neighbor, a former submarine captain in a western nation and still on active duty, said he and other captains get offers to captain and serve in Australia’s and other countries’ submarine service. The culture and skill necessary to field a submarine force take a nation years to develop, and grafting talent into the force speeds the process.
