No reason to believe deadly shooting by 18-year-old was not justified, Logan County sheriff says

There is no reason to believe the shooting of a 37-year-old man by his 18-year-old stepson would be anything other than a domestic situation that ended in a homicide, Logan County Sheriff Randall Dodds told News Center 7 on Wednesday.

“It’s possible this could be justified,” Sheriff Dodds told News Center 7?s Brandon Lewis. “I don’t know that now…. We were comfortable with the fact we didn’t have a killer on the loose out there. There was no reason to believe anything else [other] than a domestic incident. There wasn’t any evidence . . . we thought we could make an arrest [on] or take him into custody.”

Dodds said the preliminary investigation shows that the stepson called 911 about 10:27 p.m. Tuesday to report a domestic altercation and a shooting at the address in the 2600 block of Myeerah Trail, east of West Liberty in the county.

During the 911 call, the stepson said his stepfather, identified as Lee Brokaw, told him and his younger sister that it was their turn to die, Dodds said.

“He walked in and pointed the gun at me and my sister and he told us both to get on our knees,” the stepson told 911. “He pointed the gun at our heads and then my mom came up behind him and tried to wrestle him — he threw the gun on the ground.”

Out of fear for his safety as well as his family’s safety, he shot the man, the sheriff said.

Sheriff’s deputies shoot and kill man allegedly armed with machete in South L.A.

Nathan Solis
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a man who was allegedly armed with a machete in the Florence-Graham neighborhood in South Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Deputies received reports of a man armed with a machete and threatening employees at a business in the 9100 block of Graham Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. When they arrived, they were directed to a man walking south, away from the business on Graham Avenue.

Deputies found the man seated inside a white Nissan pickup truck. He allegedly punched and kicked the deputies after they made contact with him and then he retrieved a machete from inside the truck, authorities said. The man allegedly swung the machete at the deputies as he approached them and the deputies tried to subdue him by using less-lethal weapons, but they were ineffective, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

I have to wonder what would make a father snap like that? Drugs? Family situation? Undiagnosed (mental) disease? These things usually don’t come out of nowhere, they’re an accumulation over a long period of time.
Good for the stepson for stepping up to defend himself and his family, even at the cost of his stepfather. Stepson is going to need counseling over this.

Not a father, a stepfather. No excuses but I’ve heard that feeding someone else’s kids can be stressful.

A machete. Just a larger variation of a knife. And as we’ve all said, and heard, “Don’t bring……”
Is south LA becoming the new “Florida”? Nah. Florida will still reign supreme for people that make us say, “WTF was he thinking?”

Mental disease may be a terrible thing, but so is threatening to do bodily harm to others. I really don’t have a problem with nut jobs being eliminated from the gene pool.

That bullpup will bite you! “…chambered in 7.62 Nato…” Be still my beating heart. Small dog with a dangerous bite. Kinda reminds me of meself.

Homicide: The killing of a human being.
Murder: The killing of a human being, with malice, for no justified reason.
That’s why you will never hear of a “justified murder”, but will hear of a “Justified Homicide”.
It is legal to use deadly force when the following circumstances are present:
To stop the IMMEDIATE, and otherwise UNAVOIDABLE danger of DEATH or GRAVE BODILY HARM to the innocent.
I would have to say the step son was in a situation that met all of those circumstances, and thus acted accordingly.
