Detroit ice cream store promises to deny service to police officers wearing body armor
This story first broke the other day. This vegan ice cream shop won’t serve “anyone in body armor”, a veiled reference to cops. Of course, if you look at the business’s past social media posts, prior to George Floyd they were very supportive of the police and had photos with local officers and the Police Explorer post as part of their social media.
Now, it seems they’re doubling down as they virtue signal. If I were in the reserves or guard around there, I’d love to kit all my guys up in flak jackets on a drill weekend and record them all being denied service.
A Detroit ice cream store said it will deny service to police officers if they are wearing tactical body armor.
Cold Truth Soft Serve, located at 4240 Cass Avenue, posted a photo on social media of a Detroit police cruiser parked in front of their shop with the caption, “We can tolerate the parking however you please but we will not serve anyone wearing body armor.”
The owner, Tim Mahoney, released a statement defending the vegan establishment, which he said prides itself on being a family and community business.
“There are times when police units come through and are outfitted in heavy-duty tactical gear, it is disturbing and unsettling for some of the families in our space. In the last 24 hours, It has come to my attention that the City of Detroit outfits EMS and FIRE with armor, and this is not my concern. It’s the heavy-duty military dress that I’m hoping the city can find a way to minimize in our public spaces.”
Detroit Police Chief James White defended his officers wearing the protective gear, and called the denial of service and subsequent social media post, “shameful and apparently unprovoked.”
White said his department is hoping to contact Mahoney and store management to talk about the social media post.
“Law enforcement is a dangerous profession. Body armor provides our officers protection and is an essential part of the police uniform,” he said in a statement. “It is the desire of each and every member of the Detroit Police Department to fulfill their duties as a law enforcement officer and at the end of their shift return home to their loved ones.
“Members of DPD wear body armor to protect themselves so they can return home safely.
“It’s a shameful post and apparently, unprovoked.
“We are extremely thankful for the overwhelming response and support we receive from the community. We’ve attempted to reach out to the shop’s owner in hopes of having a thoughtful conversation.”
A Detroit police spokesman said that there are no instances he knows of where officers have been denied service at Cold Truth Soft Serve for wearing body armor.
In the meantime, reaction online to the store’s online posts spread through some of the first responder ranks and through the community, earning a backlash.
In another social media post, Cold Truth shared a photo of negative reviews (see below) with the caption, “Sorry to all the new visitors, we are not comfortable with Tactical gear/body armor at our space.”
A Google reviewer by the name of EMT to RN Ryan wrote: “Trash company that does not support fire, EMS, or police. Calls himself a vet. Should probably strip that title because you’re a poor excuse for a vet. Good luck with the new business venture after your business face dives. You’re an ice cream shop, not a 5 star restaurant.”
Jackelyn W. said: “The fact that you discriminate and have made it very clear that you will not serve police, the people that keep you safe and if your establishment needed them they would be there in a heartbeat. Terrible service and mediocre ice cream! Boycott this place!!!!!!!”

Civilian Finds Rifle Left in Unlocked Vehicle by Guardsman on Border Mission
More lectures on accountability coming in 3…2…1…
A National Guardsman on the southern border mission left a loaded M4 rifle in an unlocked vehicle Thursday, which was quickly found by a civilian.
“I think it’s irresponsible, reckless and a danger to public safety if that’s the way the National Guard is doing things,” Marianna Treviño Wright, who found the weapon, told Military.com. “If they cannot secure their weapons, how are they supposed to secure the border?”
Treviño Wright is the executive director of the National Butterfly Center, a 100-acre nature preserve on the U.S.-Mexico border. She said there were five vehicles in front of the preserve, some belonging to the National Guard and others being Border Patrol vehicles.
One vehicle had soldiers in it, which drove away when she approached. Treviño Wright saw a pickup truck used by Guardsmen still running and noticed a loaded M4 with a close combat optic, or CCO, attached in the driver’s seat. It also had at least one assault pack and multiple floatation devices in the bed.
Fearing the weapon could be taken by someone with bad intentions, she confiscated it and immediately called Border Patrol authorities. Roughly 45 minutes later, Border Patrol personnel and National Guardsmen came back to retrieve the rifle.
The Texas National Guard did not respond to Military.com’s request for comment or answer questions on whether the soldier faces any punitive action. Losing track of a weapon is widely seen as one of the greatest sins a service member can commit, a stance that’s drilled into troops beginning in basic training. It is common for a soldier’s company level chain of command to be investigated and potentially punished for a lack of proper oversight after such weapons are lost.
“Let’s say the Guard or Border Patrol were trying to apprehend someone, who got past them and got to that vehicle with the weapon,” Treviño Wright said. “Anyone could have grabbed it, multiple people went by on bicycles and were jogging.”
Treviño Wright said she has constantly battled with the National Guard over trespassing on her property and causing incidents. In January, soldiers crashed a truck into one of the nature preserve’s gates.

Brown University ‘mindfulness’ course offered only to minority students
Racism is so hot right now.
A new course at Brown University has sparked controversy after it was offered solely to minority students.
The teacher training class in mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) was recently made available only to students who identify as Black, Indigenous or Latino. Anyone who identifies as BIPOC, regardless of their age or whether or not they are a student at Brown, was allowed to enroll in the online class, which debuted in May.
The exclusion of white and Asian students raised the ire of one anonymous Brown student, who was turned away from the MBSR program because they don’t identify as BIPOC. In a May 13 complaint filed with the Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism (FAIR), a “civil rights and liberties organization,” the student stated that “Brown is offering a RACE-BASED teacher training program that is ONLY open to certain demographics (black, latino, indigenous).
The complaint continues: “This program will also offer grants to these students to help manage the cost of the program. Financial assistance is NOT being offered to members of other demographics who may not be able to afford the program either. (white & asian). This results in certain demographics being favored over others and is discriminatory. As a student of the program, I find myself being unable to continue my training with this institution as I refuse to support educational segregation based solely on skin color as it violates my core principles, values, and the Buddhist teachings that which this program is based on.”
The student calls the program, which is funded by a foundation grant and the university’s School of Public Health, “a return to educational segregation based on skin color.”
Bion Bartning, the president and founder of FAIR, called Brown’s course “discriminatory.”
“In a misguided effort, perhaps, to remedy past injustices, Brown University has decided to discriminate against students solely on the basis of skin color and ethnic background,” Bartning said. “Such actions are neither legally, nor morally, justified and we urge the university to reconsider its decision.”
Following the complaint, FAIR attorney Leigh Ann O’Neill sent a strongly worded letter to Brown University’s president, Christina Hull Paxson, on June 15, accusing the university of violating Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which states, “No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
Dr. Eric B. Loucks, director of Brown University’s Mindfulness Center, defended the school’s decision to limit the course to people of color, saying, “the intent is to reach future teachers who have a special interest in or history of personal engagement with the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and/or Latino/Latina/Latinx peoples and others who have been underrepresented in the mindfulness field.”
Brown has since changed its policy to allow all students, not just minority students, to enroll in the class when it resumes in August.
“Upon further review of our early promotional materials for the program, we realigned them to reflect the program’s inclusive nature, while still meeting the goal of addressing the needs, life experiences, and priorities of marginalized communities,” Loucks told The Post.

Suspect killed during attempted robbery in SW Houston after accidentally being shot by himself or accomplice, HPD says
This is one Houston Police Department investigation where the person killed is not the victim, according to authorities.
Investigators said a plot to rob a man backfired in a deadly way Tuesday afternoon.
The southwest Houston community is still trying to process the news after police said two suspects tried to rob a man in the 600 block of Skyline around 5:30 p.m.
“That victim reported that he was walking down Skyline when a car pulled up and two males got out of that car and attempted to rob him. During the robbery, they shot him once in the leg,” said HPD Lieutenant Larry Crowson.
Investigators said the victim was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.
“You usually don’t hear that out here. What you here is mostly fights,” said neighbor Felipe Reyes.
Crowson said one of the robbers was also shot, either by himself or the other suspect.
“One of the robbers was accidentally shot by the other robber or shot himself. They both got in the car and left,” Crowson said.
Police said the suspects drove to the nearby Windswept Gardens Apartments complex where it’s believed at least one of them may live.
When they arrived, investigators said the injured suspect was dragged inside the apartment building where he died.
“Dumb criminals. Dumb criminals, man… wow,” Reyes said. “Like, I mean, that was very stupid. Like, whatever happened, it was uncalled for and it was just stupid, plain stupid.”
Right now, it’s unclear what property, if any, was stolen from the victim.
The surviving suspect is now facing a robbery charge and possibly manslaughter or murder charges pending the investigation.

Back yonder, in my food service days, I made sure that the LEO working my ‘hood beat got a free meal during my shift. Cheap insurance
PVT Snuffy gots some ‘splainin’ to do.
No one but black/brown/rainbow people are ever discriminated against. Everybody knows that! /s/
Bled out with a wound from yourself/partner in crime. To quote The Great One…”How sweet it is!”
Food service and the stop-and-robs, we always took care of our LEOs.
I find it telling that the owner does not mind the LEO presence in the parking lot where it may deter the baddies but doesn’t want them inside the store.
Maybe they could have a back door, separate seating, drinking fountain clearly marked “Law Enforcement Only”.
What a crock of shite.
Reason #629,396 why it’s a bad idea having National Guard troops on the border.
So where do the Homies erect the memorial for the young scholar in Houston who was bout to turn his life around, the place where he was shot, or the place where the cops toe tagged him? Inquiring minds want to know.
At the least, they’ll name the street for him.
Am sure that their are other ice cream parlors that the LEO’s can go to. I wonder if soft serve ice cream will be held up once the word is out about banning the PD wearing body armor. I bet the store will take a loss of customers over this.
How many cops take a break from fighting The Riddler and The Penguin and say to their partner “You know what would taste great right now? Vegan ice cream.”
Well, since there are so many people who want to defund the police, I guess they’ll have to rely on the perps to end their criminal careers by shooting each other.
Works for me.
