A newly constructed memorial honoring nine fallen Rhode Island Marines in Beirut Lebanon was vandalized two weeks before Memorial Day.

Vandals target Rhode Island Nine Memorial honoring fallen Marines

Providence’s Rhode Island Nine Memorial honoring the lives of fallen Marines was vandalized over the weekend.

“Sick to my stomach,” Charlie Masterson, curator of the memorial said. “It’s no accident about this. This was this was a concerted effort to destroy this monument.”

The monument honors the nine Rhode Island Marines who lost their lives in the 1983 Beirut bombing. It was unveiled in September 2020.

Nine glass panels each have a picture of the fallen Marines. Two of the nine panels were shattered.

After hearing about the vandalism, Masterson went to see the damage for himself and speak with Providence police.

“It’s peaceful, it’s tranquil, and for somebody that violates that, the depravity … I can’t fathom,” he said. “I can’t fathom what’s going through somebody’s mind to do something like this. This is terrible.”

The nine Rhode Island Marines were among the 241 American service members killed in the 1983 bombing of a U.S. Marines Corps barracks in Beirut.

“People need to know about sacrifice. They need to know about patriotism,” Masterson said. “This monument, it’s a beautiful monument, I’d much rather have a live Marine.”

Somebody speculated that the vandal(s) loosened a paver and threw it against the glass.  One was found nearby.

It cannot be said that this is part of an ongoing war against monuments, or simply a random act of violence.  The former is usually a part of a staged public protest and this activity seemed to be under the cover of darkness.

No word on whether the monument can be repaired in time for Memorial Day 2022.

I would hope that it is just some immature kid with a pellet gun
but in todays world I know better. We broke street lights when
kids but the sacrifices of our elders were respected by us.
Post WW2 parenting went a long way.

I’d say it was a deliberate act by a despicable POS that needs to be vandalized with paving stones too. Told y’all awhile back that it would not end with the destruction of Confederate War Memorials. Here’s another example of allowing scum to get away with their actions. Catch ’em, keel haul ’em, then hang ’em.

Chulai

They should be stood against a wall.

The Stranger

I’d rather bury them in a fire ant hill.

Berliner

First shove the contents of a stick of Icy Hot up their nether region before letting the fire ants have a snack. 😜

As a fellow but infrequent visitor to your namesake, I like your remedy for vandalism against the memory of our dead warriors.

Things like this make me want to bring back the Pillory as a punishment, my thought is it was likely done by some antifa cockroach shit on his way back to his Parents’ house where he lives in the basement.
