Woman gets out of car in drive through, car moves without her

| May 15, 2022

In the video, the woman is seen outside her vehicle. The vehicle subsequently rolls on, the woman goes after it. It continues to the edge; both the woman and the car disappear on the other side. She apparently made it inside the vehicle before it crashed into a ditch.

From WECT News:

The video, taken by another person in the drive thru line, starts as the woman is getting out of the driver’s side of her car, apparently trying to get condiments off a cart by the drive thru window. Almost instantly, her car begins rolling forward. As she runs beside the vehicle, which is travelling through the parking lot and towards a busy section of College Road, Chick-fil-A employees can be heard saying “Get your car!” and “This is why we’re concerned, ma’am.”

An employee suggests calling the police just as the woman’s car careens over a retaining wall, crashing into a ditch below. “Oh God! Please tell her to stop!” an employee says as she watches events unfold. A young man in a Chick-fil-A uniform runs towards the woman, who reportedly was able to get back into the car just before it crashed.

Family members say the woman’s vehicle was totaled in the crash, but she was not injured. They say when she was putting her drinks into the car’s cup holder, she accidentally knocked the gear shift into neutral without realizing it.

Highway Patrol confirms they responded to the crash at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 9. Family members who reached out to WECT say the woman in the video was charged with DWI, but not arrested. They questioned how she would have been able to get back inside a moving car if she had been impaired. They also said her blood alcohol level was .00. She was cited for failing a field sobriety test.

Family members say she has struggled with addiction in the past, but had been clean for months when she crashed her car. They say the ugly comments about the crash on social media have been difficult for her to deal with.

“when she was putting her drinks into the car’s cup holder”

Cup holders are dangerous and can distract the drivers attention. It is best to hold the beer between your legs so as not to take your eyes off the road.

I never drink and drive. Might hit a bump and spill my beer. I may not cry over spilt milk, but I would wail uncontrolably over spilt beer. That’s al-key-haul abuse.

Why hold it between your legs? God gave us two hands; one for steering, etc. and one for holding a beer.

Bull$4!7. The middle pedal needs depressing iffn’ that to happen. This is why the 10% rule should be obeyed:

Thou must be 10% smarterer then thy equipment.

Actually I can think of a number of ways a car can into neutral without depressing the brake. But here I am thinking lots of Xanax.

Here’s why this is BS: if knocking the car into neutral caused it to roll, then it had to have been in Drive (reverse would be unlikely) before the gear change… so it would have rolled anyway as soon as she released the brake. It was the releasing of the brake, not movement of the shift lever, that resulted in this accident.

I watched the video. This car was definitely in drive when it moved forward. The speed it was moving before it went into the ditch shows it had to have been in gear. It also doesn’t look like she was putting anything into the car when it started forward.

And this is why you should drive a “standard” transmission (though not standard in the US any more)!! If it is in gear and you take your foot off the clutch…it dies (after a little lurch). If you are too stupid to not pull the parking brake with it in neutral it just slowly rolls, not drives away like an automatic! (definitely in drive), and only if it is in neutral will it just slip back in to drive, so was screwed either way for not putting it in park!

That and you can pop the clutch to start it if the battery goes dead!

Now that her vehicle was totaled in the crash, she can now ditch it for a newer one

Heaven forbid anybody should put it in Park. And most folks forget there’s a parking brake.

I think, the car is an automatic and she put it in neutral to get out for the condiments. That would explain how she could hit the gear selector and accidentally knock it into drive. I believe all modern auto trannies have a lock-out to put and take the transmission out of park, just so this sort of accident doesn’t happen.

In modern cars you have to have your foot on the brake to change gears on an automatic transmission.

If she had 40 acres, she could have turned her car around.

Another tough time in Monkey Junction.

Sited for “NOT” passing a field sobriety test.

Sorry, Cited.
