Amazon drops Kindle price
I don’t push my links on you folks very often, but Amazon just made it worth my (and your) while. I don’t know how many books ya’all read, but I read a ton a year. It was a main point of contention with my wife because I can’t seem to throw any away. I looked at Kindle 1 last year and thought it was a great idea – no more arguments over our shrinking home and all the books I can read delivered in seconds. But it was too expensive, so I figured I’d wait.
A year later, they brought out Kindle 2 and I figured they’d never drop the price so I bought it the first day it was available. It’s been the most useful thing I ever bought – books and newpapers delivered at the moment I get the urge – and no cluttered bookshelves. I’ve read more in the last few months than I ever read in my life. Waiting at the doctors’ office doesn’t bother me anymore since I always have a book to read because it’s so convenient to take everywhere.
Amazon has over 300,000 book titles available for Kindles (I’ve never not found a book I was looking for) in addition to some newspapers and blogs. The newspapers are waiting for me in the Kindle when I get up in the morning – and there’s no little Chinese guy trying to throw the newspaper through my plate glass window every morning.
The Kindle reads to you (with a choice of male or female voice), it has an MP3 player and limited websurfing on the free 3G network.
Last night Amazon emailed me that they dropped the price $50, so it’s about $300 now. The first price drop in the history of the thing. Plus they bumped up what I’ll earn on it if you buy it from the link in my sidebar. If you’ve been thinking about buying one – now’s the time. And TAH is the place.
Added: By the way, there have been some questions about the links, so I figured I take some time to explain them. On the Google links, I get paid when you click them. Period. You don’t have to buy anything.
On the Amazon banners, even if you don’t buy the stuff advertised on the banner, as long as you click over to Amazon from TAH and buy something, I get a piece of it. Actually, all I get is credit on my Amazon bill at the end of the month – so you’re just paying my Amazon bill, which, as you can imagine, is pretty substantial every month since I buy all of my media from them because I hate leaving my easy chair.
Thanks.

$300? Dude, that’s my monthly salary. What kind of income from this blog are you hiding from me?
I demand justice!
I told you yesterday, when Google pays out it’s first check to me next month, it’s anything you want off the dollar menu – on me. It’s the least I can do.
I bought a Kindle about 6 months after the first one came out. I love it. I got my son one for Christmas last year and since it is registered to my account he can download and read every book in my Amazon library. When the new KindleDx came out, I bought it. I use my original Kindle for audio books because it fits in my house dress pockets and I just couldn’t sell it. However I probably will one of these days. I highly recommend Kindle. My first one paid for itself within the first year because I’m too old to do much but I still can read a lot.
$299 bucks for that thing? I’ll take 299 double cheese burgers off the Extra Value menu instead.
If only. Someday, someday, when I’m graduated, commissioned and employed again, perhaps then I can afford one of these MARVELOUS devices. Until then, it’s my netbook’s book reading application and Gutenberg Project classics for me… Still, that’s probably a GOOD thing. Like my productivity could STAND another hit!
Well, if I ever hear back from the VA about my rating increase, I’ll consider one. Been 8 months now. But hey, I ain’t actually complaining.. 🙂
Seriously, my one concern about the Kindle is that, burined deep in the fine print, is a little known and less talked about restriction on the number of times you can download a book from your own library. The library that you only thought you were buying.
Seems that a very large number of the books available limit the number of times you can download the book, or transfer it to another platform. When you hit the magic number, you have to buy the book all over again.
So, in reality, you are only renting the books. Like everything related to the POTUS and His administration, it seems Kindle books have an expiration date too.

So this “read to me” function. Does it sound fairly lifelike, or will it remind me of the days of old where we would type stupid comments into an apple window and have the robot try to speak english?

The one book they don’t have that I want is Atlas Shrugged. There are some other much more obscure titles that aren’t available, but I go vote for them to be make for the Kindle once in a while.
I love the fact that I can change the font size with a couple of clicks. If my eyes are tired or the light isn’t so great, I just make the font bigger. And I think eInk displays are perfect for reading, especially after staring at an LCD all day long.
I’ve been meaning to have the voice read one of Chuck’s more elaborant rants and record it for giggles.
This should seal the deal for TSO:

Hmmm…sounds like a good Christmas present for the parents…
