Monument to Iwo Jima Marine toppled in Somerville, MA

| October 5, 2021

KoB sends in word that a monument to Paramarine Sergeant Henry O. Hansen was vandalized. Hansen was part of the Marine patrol sent up Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. He was one of the men who raised the first American flag over Suribachi.

I recently discussed this patrol and flag raising in a Valor Friday article if you need a refresher. In the photo of the first flag raising (which was eclipsed by the now-iconic second flag raising), Hansen is holding the flag pole and wearing a soft cover.

First Iwo Jima Flag Raising

Hansen was tragically killed in action only days later. Apparently there are those in the Somerville, MA area that don’t appreciate his sacrifices.

From MSN;

Somerville police are investigating damage done to a memorial that honors a World War II Marine who was killed during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

The Sgt. Henry O. Hansen war memorial in Hansen Park was found toppled and cracked along the left, upper edge, police said.

“People do stupid things, and I know the town will fix it, thankfully,” said a resident. “It’s sad, but we don’t teach kids things anymore, and it’s disrespectful in every way.”

Hansen was one of six members of the combat patrol who climbed, captured and helped raise an American flag on top of Mt. Suribachi in February 1945.

Hansen died in action a few days later. He was 25 years old.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 617-625-1600 ext. 7235.

^THIS^!!! And not just them, but ANYONE that destroys/vandalizes American History and War Memorials. Just another example of the lack of home training and RESPECT.

Anybody still think that this is only about destroying all thing Confederate?

I guess when you don’t know any history at all and you’ve only ever been taught that white people are the problem, then any white person at any time is a bad person. And since NAZI is just another word for bad, white Marine in WWII = Hitler. QED

One of the things I learned first as a Marine dependent and later as Active duty Air Force you gain important lessons in leadership from both good and bad leaders.

You learn from the the good parts of history as well as the unpleasant parts of history

The mayor here in own town (i live in the county, not city) got in big trouble from removing a Confederate monument in the middle of the night after the Governor signed a law to protect any monuments. He moved it from the courthouse to the cemetery overlooking Confederate Soldiers’ graves. It was replaced at the courthouse again, then after a day or two, it was moved back to the cemetery.

The worms who did this will feel the need to get praise for their act. Word will get out and then they better pray the cops get them before the vets do.

Whoever did that is the definition of the term “A total waste of flesh and oxygen”.

I’ll wager TAH members can come up with some suitable community service for the vandals, when and if.

A Paramarine to boot. Interesting article here:

“Suitable community service”? How about worm food and fertilizer? The closing scene of Fargo (movie) comes to mind.

Hatchet

Utterly despicable… When caught, this should equate and require the immediate forfeiture of a body part and to paraphrase our Umma – it really ought be one they’ll miss…

Thank you for posting this Mason and thank you KoB for sending it in.

This is whatcha get from fools who have no respect for anything including themselves. If they had any respect, even for themselves, they wouldn’t do such incredibly stupid things.

A few manners would help a lot. We used to be taught manners at school. Evidently they no longer do that sort of stuff.

Too busy teaching about the 128 genders.

I met one of these men in 2007, at the dedication of the Minnesota WWII Memorial.
His name was Charlie Lindberg. He’s the Marine standing just behind the Marine with the rifle on the right. He didn’t just make his way up that mountain, he hauled a 70 pound flame thrower on his back the entire way.
At the dedication he was an old, bent over man, who could no longer speak. But I was able to thank him for his service. One month to the day later, he returned home to join the Marines on the Streets of Heaven.
These were special men, who did an impossible thing, against the possibility of survival, to win a war that had to be won.
They somehow managed this miracle, and came home, or stayed in the soil of these far off islands.
To be forgotten by history is the worst fate that could befall them; worse than physical death. For an ignorant brute, who wouldn’t have the courage to do HALF of what Sergeant Hansen did on that one day on Iwo Jima, topple his memorial, in the dark of night when he could not be seen, makes me wonder when we are going to rip this country out of the hands of those who are trying so hard to destroy it.

Only Army Mom

On the one hand, I want to hope this was kids. And I mean real kids, like 13 or under. Because it can then be said they truly had no idea of the import of what they did.

On the other hand, I can’t recall anytime in my lifetime that kids that age would dare to do something this bad, even if they didn’t know anything about anything. The simple fact this was a memorial and it was old would’ve had kids in my day think hmmm, yeah, this is something that would get us in real trouble. This would be real bad.

If this is kids, the barometer has been lowered so much it is almost as scary as if it was a bunch of COD warriors in their ironic t-shirts, smeared with Cheeto dust, protesting evil Capitalism, bad white people or something equally offensive to their Progressive Marxist teachers. I say “a bunch” because it would take quite a few of those whose biceps mimic a typical two-year-old’s ankle to push over an empty 2-liter, much less a slab of stone.

If it is the former, the parents and the preteens get to clean bed pans at the VA for the next year. And the parents get to pay for the repair and/or replacement. If it is the latter, same-same. To start.

Unfortunately, whoever did it will probably never be caught, and certainly not held responsible.

Ooo, I like your punishment idea!

Public flogging is the first punishment that came to my mind.

Somerville had a large VFW back in the 50’s that served many of the towns
in the Boston area. My dad was a member until his town got their own Hall.
I recall the parades they would put on complete with tanks and other vehicles
towing big guns. Probably been outlawed by now.
