Biden caves to Taliban, will stick to the August 31, 2021, troop withdrawal
There was talk about the potential to continue evacuation operations beyond August 31, 2021. The Taliban warned that there would be “consequences” if the US military was not out by August 31, 2021. The Department of Defense looked to Joe Biden for the go-ahead to extend operations beyond that date. Joe Biden stayed firm with the August 31, 2021, pullout date.

President Biden has decided not to extend an Aug. 31 deadline to remove all American troops from Afghanistan, a U.S. official tells Fox News’ Lucas Tomlinson.
The development comes shortly after a Taliban spokesperson — following a meeting between leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and CIA Director William Burns in Kabul — said there will be “no extensions” to the Biden administration’s Aug. 31 date.
Defense Dept. Press Secretary John Kirby said Tuesday that the White House is still “aiming toward the end of the month” for a complete withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan.
The Pentagon also said the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan will go to “zero” at the Aug. 31 deadline.

This doesn’t seem like it is sustainable. “It” meaning to force people to stay in country as slave labor/brides and/or hold them as hostages for ransom money.
What doesn’t make sense is once the Taliban comes to full power, there will be an expectation of it to govern and provide basic human services – hospitals, electricity, food, commerce, etc. Hezbollah somewhat made a successful transition along these lines. When it did, it could no longer be associated with underhanded deeds such as terrorism, so had to pivot to being a legitimate army that provided security for its people.
The Taliban has got ‘rule-with-an-iron-fist-and-subjugate-the-population’ down, but I don’t think it is sustainable to force people to stay if they don’t want to. Perhaps as slaves, but there is the cultivation of strong resentment at that point. If you believe that you have a better society, then why force people to live in it.
They would have to treat doctors, nurses, plumbers and electricians with some dignity if they expect to provide basic human services.
This is why a regime like this is doomed to fail.
Even in a worse case scenario they kidnap Americans left in Afghanistan and behead them one by one if a ransom isn’t paid. A paid ransom that supports jihadist world-domination dreams. This upper hand is only temporary until they run out of hostages.
At some point they have to make a successful transition to taking care of their population. At this point, I don’t think they can see beyond the intoxication of having power. A business model may be to grow poppies for the opium trade as an aside, but basically host training camps for jihadists that are farmed out to perform proxy acts of terror for states that won’t put their name on these acts.
It’s only doomed to fail if the populace cares to overthrow it. I think the Afghan people have proven, with 20 years and billions of dollars of help, that they have no desire to live a democratic life in a free society. They want to have a feudal, tribal system with warlords dictating Sharia Law.
It worked last time. Like all other successful regimes you merely kill everyone who disagrees with you. They are going to make the Khmer Rouge look down right humanitarian.
You must admit, that’s a very effective way to reduce voter dissatisfaction and increase your standing in the polls.
