When it became clear that sanctions would be lifted and that the Iran nuclear deal was going to happen, Iran produced a video. It showed a massive Muslim army converging on Jerusalem. Fast forward to round two. There are indications that some sanctions will be lifted. One Iranian response? Another video, this time showing the Capitol blowing up and the Muslims once again looking at “liberating” Jerusalem. This is an example of what was meant about the quote about preparing for and deserving a master.

Ah, the giddiness of having once again achieved the coveted, sought, never given, always earned FIRST on the WOT! To celebrate, how about some trivia? DID YOU KNOW…? By Commissioner Wretched A couple of weeks ago, in this very column, I made a reference to the fourth, now-forgotten member of the Rice Krispies character team, Pow. On social media, I heard from several of you who felt rather sorry for Pow, being ousted from the team so soon after being added. Sure, it’s all well and good to be concerned about fireflies and their short life spans, but what about Pow? Is anybody thinking of him? A friend of mine at valorguardians.com came to my rescue on that point. According to Hack Stone, it turns out that Pow was able to resurrect his career in entertainment after all. During the 1960s, he was one of the on-screen printed sound effects you saw whenever there was a fight on the Batman TV series. It’s nice to know that Pow earned enough to retire! (I just wish I’d thought of that.) Now, on to this week’s trivia … Did you know … … a famous chef once supervised the catering at a presidential wedding reception? When President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) got married to Edith Bolling Galt (1872-1961) at the bride’s home in 1915, the reception was catered by Hector Boiardi (1897-1985). If you’re wondering who Boiardi was, you’ve heard of him – or at least of the line of Italian foods he created and sold under the name of Chef Boyardee. Boiardi used that spelling of his last name to help Americans pronounce it correctly. At the time of the presidential nuptials, Boiardi was working at the Greenbrier Hotel in West Virginia, where the actual reception was held. Even though he was only 17 years old at the time, he was placed in charge of all catering for the reception. I am happy to announce that Sf3c Robert Edward Bailey, of the USS Oklahoma has made it back to Ohio in time for Memorial Day weekend 79 years after he gave his life for his country. It was a great honor to fly his remains on the last leg to Columbus from Denver.
SF3c Bailey was mentioned here on 31 January of this year.
Well done.
FIRST I had to finish mowing the lawn.
We had 3 days straight w/o rain at the GB Compound, and the grass was getting above my knees, so me and a push mower made some rounds today.
Earlier this week was Mrs. GB’s birthday, and for the 45th time in 46 years of wedded bliss I made her another from-scratch birthday cake. As far as we can determine, I’ve never made the same one twice.
I took the recipe from my old Betty Crocker cookbook with some little twists:
Silver White Cake
2 c all-purpose flour
1 ½ c sugar
3 ½ tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
½ c shortening
1 c milk
1 tsp vanilla
1/8 tsp peppermint extract
4 egg whites
½ c semi-sweet chocolate chips
Heat oven to 350°
Grease & flour 2 round layer pans.
Measure flour, sugar backing powder, salt, shortening, 2/3 c of the milk, the vanilla and the peppermint extract into a large bowl
Blend ½ minute low speed, scraping bowl constantly.
Beat 2 minutes high speed, scraping bowl occasionally.
Add remaining mile and the egg whites; beat 2 minutes high speed, scraping bolw occasionally.
Stir in chocolate chips.
Pour into pans
Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until matchstick inserted in cake comes out clean.
Chocolate Butter Frosting
1/3 c soft butter or margarine
2 oz melted unsweetened chocolate (cool)
2 c confectioners’ sugar
1 ½ tsp vanilla
about 2 tbsp milk
Mix butter and cooled chocolate thoroughly.
Blend in sugar.
Stir in vanilla and milk
beat until frosting is smooth and of spreading consistency.
I’ve managed to keep her happy again.
