A-ha! I’m not a jerk!

| January 18, 2008

After being a Sprint subscriber for nearly eight years, I finally got tired of calling them every month the last few months about my bill and dumped them cold. As soon as I hung up from canceling my account, I threw their phone in the trash. Apparently, I’m not the only one (WSJ link);

Sprint Nextel Corp.’s shares plunged 25% as the wireless carrier reported worse-than-expected losses in cellphone subscribers and issued a gloomy outlook for 2008.

While I feel sorry for the 4,000 people Sprint expects to lay off, I’m glad that I’m not the only person who has gotten tired of their piss-poor service. For years, I never had to call them about anything, I kept the same plan and my bill never changed, but a few months ago, crap started showing up on my bill requiring that I call and complain. They were always helpful and fixed the bill, but I was spending more time on my phone with Sprint than with anyone else. I’m an old man, I don’t tolerate change well.

Anyway, let this serve as notice to all of you who have my phone number, it doesn’t work anymore. I’m going to try to survive with a land line until I can find the perfect plan.

For years I had Tracfone, prepaid phone. But last time I had trouble renewing, and you call them and they don’t speak English. I got sick of it. So I got a T-Mobile prepaid plan. Nicer telephone, customer service people speak English (yes I called before I bought) but the signal coverage isn’t as good as Tracfone. When I was searching, I found a cool website that compared the different companies and plans. I’ll see if I can find it again.
