CT man arrested after shooting bear to protect his dog

By Jim Shay
A 26-year-old local man was arrested this week by environmental conservation police after killing a bear to protect his dog, officials said.

The mother bear was killed and her two cubs survived. The dog was not hurt.

Will Healey, spokesman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said William O’Connor’s dog ran toward a bear and her cubs that were foraging in the woods near his Walnut Hill Road property line on Tuesday afternoon.

“The dog started barking and the mother bear treed her two cubs,” Healey said. “The bear stood her ground and started making loud noises, believing her cubs were threatened.”

Healey said O’Connor, concerned about his dog’s safety, retrieved a rifle and shot in the direction of the bear to scare it away.

Seems bears have Stand Your Ground rights in Connecticut, Delta Whiskies and Whiskettes.

“Our ultimate goal, total control of handguns, is going to take time. The first problem is to slow down production and sales. Next is to get registration. The final problem is to make possession of all handguns and ammunition (with a few exceptions) totally illegal.” — Pete Shields, founder of Handgun Control, Inc., New Yorker Magazine

The bear was a good girl, going to community college in the spring, turning her life a’roun. /s

The DEEP Conofficers are usually pretty understanding, usually…

I saw this sad story the other day. ALL of my sympathies are with the Mama Bear…and her orphaned chill’ren. She WAS a good girl and she dindu nuffin, except try to defend her babies. She was minding her own bidness, just trying to forage up some rations, IN THE WOODS, mind you, NOT roaming thru the house, in the trash cans, attacking the dog, or hard charging towards the dumbass with the weapon. Can’t blame the puppy dog for it’s actions either, just doing the good dog guard duty.

Dickhead homeowner screwed up…”shot in the direction…”? (Throws bull sh^t flag) Nah bitch, you SHOT AT the bear. You know it, I know it, the CT Game Warden knew it, and now the American People know it. Game Warden prolly wouldn’t have written you up if he thought the shooting was a good shoot. The bears were in CT FIRST, people are the interlopers. CT would be better off if there were more bears and less liberals. I’d say the bears ought to eat the liberals but I wouldn’t want the bears to suffer from an upset tummy.

The gun pr0n ties in nicely with the thread from yesterday. Shows that Remington Arms Management has been NOT doing their job for a good while now. Putting profits ahead of product quality will bite you on the azz, Every.Damn.Time!

“CT would be better off if there were more bears and less liberals”. Amen.
Per the article there’s been a spate of home invasions by our furréd friends, “DEEP recently reported there has been a record 42 instances of bears entering homes so far this year. In 2019, there were 17 instances of bears entering Connecticut homes”
If Señor F**klehead wanted to has a ‘good shoot’ he could have just waited.
Just FYI, I’m def not defending his actions, hell this is 100% the fault of morons not policing up their areas of food stuffs for dem ursine crooks.
Here in my AO there’s a wild game freeway in my backyard, the CT river greenway, and on the other a bevy of restaurants and households that love to leave their dumpsters open.
I’ve seen signs of BB and no doubt will come face-to sooner than later.
But I’m of the mindset, it ain’t a problem til they charge, and if the cuties wanna wrestle I’ll probably give ‘em a run for their money.
But the best defense is food denial and making them nervous ‘bout coming round via loud noises and dawgs.
        Less shots fired the bester.

Poor bear, just leave it the fuck alone and she won’t bother you!! They should have shot the stupid homeowner! The bears were here first and won’t bother anyone!!
Karma is a bitch and she is really going to get even with this stupid fucker!!

    • David says:

Guessing you never lived in bear country or seen a mama bear around cubs. If you happen to be near the cubs, even unknowingly, “just leave it alone” is not always a viable option.

  3. Hack Stone says:

Back in the fall of 2016, there was a woman in Montgomery County Maryland attacked by a Momma Bear. This was back in the days when WTOP would allow comments on news articles. A lot of people were upset that Momma Bear was killed, leaving orphaned cubs. One comment was “What happened to the cubs?” Hack was obligated to reply with “They won the World Series, pick up a newspaper once in a while.”
