Open thread

| August 30, 2013

Ex-PH2 asked that I start doing more open threads like I did a week or so ago. My two weeks vacation starts today, so, I’m amenable to the suggestion. I’ve got a new receiver for my AR coming today, so I have some other things I could be doing besides waiting for the next Denial of Service attack (which, by the way, is being reported to the FBI as we speak – another nail in Wickre’s legal coffin). It seems that with every DoS attack, it gets easier to find the perpetrator. But you guys go ahead do what you want with this thread – exchange recipes, post links, bloggers push your blog, whatever. You know how to get a hold of me.

Grrr… typo! ‘puncutation’ should be ‘punctuation’.

Vnprotestor, the night you were conceived, your Momma was doing tricks with Winos behind a Bus Station for fifty cents a pop, and she gave change!!
As for us Conservatives, when was the last time anyone heard of robberies, rapes, looting, rioting, illegal drugs, or defecating on police cars at a Tea Party Rally, all of which we’ve read about wherever and wherever your ilk gather and infect someplace?

A Proud Infidel

Ladies and Gentlemen of TAH, I wonder if vnprotestor isn’t just Psul the uncool fool, aka Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Wickre sock puppeting when he isn’t guzzling Thunderbird and dancing to “The Hustle” in his spandex?

ExHack

@103: No, Infidel. vnprotestor lacks the signature (undeserved) arrogance and elitism we see from that individual.

Damn, Ex-PH2, you walked it to him. You got madder at him than you ever have at Psulio!

Pickled eggs done easy.

You will need

1dozen eggs

1 Jar small pickled beets

white vinegar

water

crushed red pepper flakes

2 1qt glass jars with lids, cleaned and dried

In a pot, boil the eggs hard. Drain and let cool. Shell them, and open the jar of small pickled beets.

Layer the eggs and beets alternately in the glass jars.

Boil equal amounts of vinegar and water (about 2 cups each). Add the liquid from the pickled beets. Using a ladle, pour this over the eggs/beets. In one jar, you can add some red pepper flakes (I make 1 jar without for delicate eaters). Put on the lids and hand-tighten, and let set until cool. Place in the fridge for 1 week. Take out and enjoy.

The beets & their liquid will turn the whites of the eggs purple, but the yols will remain golden. This is especially nice for Eater, etc. 🙂

The eggs and beets are great, especially served with some form of sausage and cole slaw, and washed down with cold beer.

Made a GREAT curried meatloaf a couple weeks back. Yeah, I know, but go with me on this one.

Take 2 pounds of ground beef, or, alternately, beef & pork. Put it into a bowl and let it set to room temperature (cover with a cloth).

Meantime, whisk together two eggs, and a cup of cracker crumbs. Into this, add 1/2 jar of Patak’s Dopiaza Curry Sauce. Whisk it all until blended, then pour over the meat and use your hands to blend it all together.

Put into a large glass pan and form into a loaf. Run your thumb lengthwise down the center to make a channel. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes to and hour, until it’s nicely baked.

The last 10 minutes, remove from oven and pour the remaining curry sauce over the meatloaf. Return to oven to finish heating the sauce.

Serve with rice & a vegetalble. I prefer some honey-glazed carrots, but its all good.

FWIW, Dopiaza is a tomato-based curry with onions and roasted cumin that’s wicked good. 🙂

EX-PH2, Et Alii: Although I was drafted, I never did get a draft notice. After being denied enlistment in the United States Marine Corps, I went to the local draft board and VOLUNTEERED to be drafted. That automatically put me at the head of the list, and automatically put me in the United States Army, for the United States Army is the senior service, and in a draft, they always get the first pick of the draftees. As for a Viet Nam veteran in a wheel chair begging – – – ? First of all, is he as old as I am (sixty-seven years old)? If not, he might be a fake. Most of my friends who served in the old Republic of Viet Nam are now deceased (which makes me wonder why we have such a high mortality rate?). I never saw any of them BEG on the street, EVER! Either they received some sort of assistance from the Veterans Administration and/or Social Security, or their fellow Viet Nam veterans helped look after their welfare. Occasionally, I would “panhandle” on the street, not to beg for a handout, but to get people to listen to my songs, hoping to become a star (which never happened). By the way, at my own personal web site, “OUR ETERNAL STRUGGLE”, I’ve just posted one of my homemade amateur video recordings of ME (!), strumming my guitar and singing an original song I composed, “STILL ALONE”. I also updated a homemade amateur video recording of ME (!), performing an original cowboy song, “DRY VALLEY WALTZ”, composed by a friend of mine (who’s a GENUINE cowboy). And, I’m very proud of my homemade amateur video recording of ME (!) performing an Elvis Presley hit song, “DOING THE BEST I CAN”, which was featured in the Hollywood movie, “G.I. BLUES”. So, y’all go look at my videos of me singing and strumming my guitar. Now, then, back to the alleged homeless veteran begging for a handout – – – , Quite a few years ago, while walking home from Mormon church services, I passed a… Read more »

Family usually goes out to eat on Sundays, and they haven’t done anything much in the way of cookouts since I was a teenager. My youngest aunt did make preserves last night with the plums that uncle picked up before he left Coos Bay to head back to where we are in Arizona.

He’s got six lots up there that he bought in the 60’s, and only recently did he just finish developing a couple houses for rent. The amount of energy he put into getting them built and ready is something that I would say is obscene for someone in his early seventies, except that he’s proof it’s not. I also imagine it’s pretty uncommon to find someone that generates more wealth post-retirement(s) than most dual-income couples under 40.

The other day we did something as simple as go up to Luke to borrow a hobby bay for an oil change, and we hadn’t been in the BX for five minutes he was chatting up a kiosk operator’s nephew, a year out of high school, into joining the Air Force. Traded phone numbers and everything.

I don’t know how I’m going to feel when he goes back to Indiana, after the caseworkers finish putting together all the paperwork, and grandma gets put in the group home. I know he and another couple have been talking for a bit about going for yet another trip outside of the country, to see if this time they want to do it for good. With most anyone else I’d be pretty dismissive, but considering he dedicated most of his life to government service, and still had advice, resources, and his own back to spare for quite a few people on all sides of the family and others, the country would genuinely be poorer for his departure.

A Proud Infidel

@104, yeah, Ex Hack, I have to agree, that little roach turd IS way too coherent to be “Pee Wee Herman” Wickre, but I just couldn’t resist throwing that at him/her/it!!

The girlfriend chastized me last night for our “picking on” Psulie-boi until I showed her some of the shit he’s pulled of late.

And a bear ate the hummingbird feeder last night but left the seed in the regular birdfeeder alone. Strange. Finally, I certainly hope not to be called in this weekend but issues at work might necessitate it…sigh.

LebbenB

Damn….I missed all the good stuff because I watched the season recap of Strike Back on Cinemax. Y’all should check it out. Strike Back is actually a British show about the exploits of an MI-6 counter-terrorism unit called Section 20. As I understand it, the stars are trained by ex-SAS personnel so the gun handling and movement look REALLY good.

OWB

Bacon??? National Bacon Day???????

Well. That decides that. Bacon, bacon, bacon.

@112. Triple thick cut bacon from Nueskies is the BEST!!! Hell, anything from Neuskies is awesome. One of my favorite mail order emporiums.

Going to be a great weekend, Finally got my a#% to the gun shop to pick out a new 9MM. I’d rather have a 40 or 45, but I want to intruduce my wife to the pleasures of blowing the sh#$ out of stuff. Plus, since my simpleton governor signed a stringent gun bill I got to get what I can while I can. Anyine live in a good gun state?

117 – Anywhere in the south and south west.

118 – Colt Defenders are nice. Recently picked up a SAI MC Lightweight Operator myself.

Just started the 6-9 month wait for my next suppressor. I went with an AAC SDN-6. Usually, I go with Gemtech but I got a new upper from AAC in 300 AAC Blackout and it came with a 51T AAC muzzle device, so I recon I’ll give them a try.

Speaking of 300 AAC BLK, WOW. It’s a pig killing round for sure. I’m thinking about shifting from 5.56 to it for my HD rifle.

The truly great thing about the round is converting a 5.56/.223 upper to 300 BLK is as simple as changing the barrel. Same bolt, same mag (and no loss of capacity like with 6.8 SPC)

RE: #95:
“they should be pittied considering what you do to them when they get caught.”
Tell us, what DO we do to them here?
Do we do something effective?
Do we cause them angst?
De we put sand in their vagina?
Please, enlighten us, because we ARE trying to do something to the phonies, but we would appreciate an AAR, (you do know what an “AAR” is, don’t you?).
And, to offer some crediblity to your pitiful self, how about you answer the basic questions that our friend Ex PH2 has asked?

This is what vietnam war protestor has been missing all these years. Vets know what this is by another name:

2 Cups Boiling Water
2 Cups Chipped (dried) Beef, chopped a little
2 Tablespoon unsalted Butter
2 Tablespoon Flour
2 Cups Half-and-Half

Pour the boiling water over the beef. Drain immediately.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

When it foams, stir in the beef, letting the edges frizzle a little.

Stir in the flour, reduce the heat to low and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from the heat and slowly stir in the half-and-half.

Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens. Don’t let it boil or the half-and-half will take on a scalded taste.

Cook another 5 minutes. Serve over toast, split biscuits or eggs.

Bon-Appetit.

Goooooooood Morning, TAH!!!

Re: el chupapollo vnwarprotestor wouldn’t/couldn’t answer one simple question, and his scribblings were basically illiterate – not exaggerated hyperbole like psul the uncool’s – so I figured he was faking it.

Besides, there were conscientious objectors who were drafted into the Army and went to Vietnam, and there were draft dodgers who simply ran away. I knew one, a doctor whose specialty was cytopathology, who was convinced he’d be in the thick of a firefight and ran off to Canada, when in fact, he’d probably have spent his entire time at Walter Reed. He was an idiot.

I just got tired of playing the twerp’s game.

#119. It’s my own damn fault for moving to MD when I retired. I shoulda gone back to Texas.

That guy

Let’s talk about burger MEAT. The actual meat with which we make our burgers.
Me, I’m a fan of 20/80 beef. 20%fat for the taste.
Rebuttal?

jerry920

#124. Agreed. 70/30 has too much fat for me and shrinks a lot. 90/10 is just missing that flavoring that comes with the fat. we have a Lancaster Dutch market nearby where you can get really good meat fresh.

When I went to Schrank’s to get cigars to send to someone, they had an antique 1851 Colt revolver in a wood display case. It had an engraved barrel, a bunch of (I guess lead) balls in a couple of pockets, and a powder flask. It was for sale. http://www.smokengun.org/

Schrank’s is in Waukegan. If it’s a revolver and had a powder & ball load, how do you load it? I forgot to ask that question. They also had an Uzi with an instruction booklet in another case.

Oh, yeah — how were those cigars?

My wife and I collasped the frame on our bed last night. It was an outstanding achievement for me. Oh … It was an oustanding achievement for my lovely wife too. We still got it!

I simply cannot resist this, because it is National Bacon Day.

jerry920

#131, Congrats! Where are you off to now?

#126, Even closer for me. I live in the DC Metro area so VA is just across the river and WV is just up the road. It’s good for me here though because my work takes me to most of the military bases in the local area on a monthly basis.

ex-PH2:

Regarding loading the percussion revolver.

You need a measure and fffg black powder. The militaryt used ffg, but it really works better with fffg.

Anyway, in real life Colt, Remington, and everyone else made & sold nitrated paper cartridges for these revolvers. They were combustible, and came in packs of 6 rounds. You also carried a small tin or percussion caps. Both these items easily fit into a vest or coat pocket.

Anyway, the paper cartridge was inserted, tail-first, into the FRONT of the chamber, then the loading lever (situated under the barrel) was used to press fit it into place. You did this with each round.

Next, you placed the hammer on half-cock, it’s intended safety, so the cylinder would rotate, and placed (press fit) a copper percussion cap onto the cone at the back of each chamber in the cylinder. 6 cartridges, 6 percussion caps.

Next, the hammer was let down carefully, and rested on a pin between each of the chambers. There was a hole in the front face of the hammer that this pin fit into so that the cylinder couldn’t rotate a round under the hammer without it (the hammer) being cocked.

It’s actually a lot faster to do that to write about. You’ll note in images that many cavalrymen and cowboys wore vests. This was so they could have 3-4 pockets available to hold things while in the saddle, like a watch, packet of cartridges, tin of caps, etc. It made it MUCH easier to load and do normal things whilst riding, or just sitting astride your mount.

Probably more than you asked for, but that’s the basics. 🙂

You headed to Hill AFB? I grew up about 50 miles north of there. Used to be on base once or twice a month with the CAP before I joined the Navy. Great museum too.

Yes I’m heading to Hill. Utah is incredible if you like to do anything outdoors. Summer hiking in the mountains or down to Moab and Arches. Winter skiing. Plus the golf course at Hill is one of the best.

AW1Tim – Thanks for the info. Definitely not too much, and glad to have it. Thank you!

Since it is National Bacon Day today, I am making it National Bacon Weekend, and taking pictures.

I also have sausages.

Hi Airforcekj,
Welcome Home, nice to see another Korean Vet here on TAH, wish we had a few more. Myself, well I’am just one of them old geezers who’s military services goes back to 1950 when the Korean war first broke out, drafted Sept, 15th 1950, discharged Sept,10th 1952, and here I am at 87 years old with a bunch of the nicest guy’s you’d ever want to meet, and don’t ask me how I got here, but I’am here. When you get settled down out in Utah drop me a line, there’s a Korean Veteran’s Chapter in Salt Lake City that you might wish to look up, all of the members are Korean service Vet’s that served over in Korea, could be some you know that were drafted from Utah, never know. Anyway I thought I’d pass this along just incase. Again, welcome back.

@137–And I spent a good portion of my “yute” not far from you. Most of it was in the Bear Lake region (Idaho side) in Montpelier, and a bit of it in the Price/Helper area. Whee.

How the hell did we get all the way out here from there?

On an unrelated note, I got a couple hundred rounds of 62-grain 5.56 ammo and three 30-round mags for $150. Not a bad price. It’s still taking too long to come down, but it’s coming down at least. I saw a .338 Lapua for $3200. Sweet looking bangstick, but worth the price? Anyone help me out?
