Micah Turner; deserter (Updated)
Phil sends us a link from YouTube which was posted on October 6th of Micah Turner. AKO says he was a sergeant at Fort Bragg and he’s surrounding himself with smelly hippies celebrating the fact that since he went AWOL 30 days before this video, he’s now a deserter. It looks like he’s making his little press conference at the Occupy DC camp a few blocks from the White House.
I think he’s trying to make a point, but since the war in Afghanistan is over, for all intents and purposes, I don’t know what that point could be.
Yes, I know people are still fighting and dying in Afghanistan, but this administration is doing it’s best to not win the war. I also wonder why we’re still over there, but since this administration has as it’s only strategy to withdraw, former sergeant Turner is pretty much joining in the rush for the exits.
He kind of reminds me of Ward Reilly who claims he went AWOL in Germany to protest the Vietnam War at a time when there were no more combat troops in Vietnam. Yeah, I’m sure the hippies love Turner, but I think he needs a throat punch. Using your uniform to make a political statement is never cool. Luckily, he won’t be a sergeant long after he turns himself in at his unit, like he promises. And I’m sure there’s someone at his unit that will give him the throat punch he deserves.

Update:Seems that he tried to turn himself into a local police station that did not seem interested in it. ALso it seems that he is all about the drama by taking photos of himself in front of a Army Recruiting station and at Fort Hamilton. Here is another video that was made yesterday by him.

Also, here’s another thing about his “brave” decision to turn himself in… In AWOL/deserter cases, turning oneself in is considered by rule to be a mitigating factor that often minimizes the penalty in a court martial. It also is a big factor when determining whether to charge the person or merely discharge him with an OTH. So he’s not being brave… he’s being tactical and operating under the cover of lawyers and friends for his own motives.
…although in the event of court-martial (assuming I’m right and they can’t prove more than AWOL, precisely for the reason you state – turning himself in is evidence he didn’t intend to leave permanently), going over 30 days increased his maximum sentence exposure from 6 months/no BCD to 1 year/DD or BCD. (On the other hand, waiting that long actually made him eligible for a chapter 10.)

@ MCPO. Since the mid to late 70’s the US Army ceased chasing AWOL’s. It was a money saving move for them in which if the AWOL gets popped by civilian LEO, say on a traffic beef, hopefully said AWOL would most likely be listed with NCIC (or whatever database it is these days)and then, Big Army might send the MP’s, MPI or if warranted CID to escort said shit bag to the nearest home for wayward troops…At least that is how I understood it to be.
I would be re-miss in not saying that JAGC is most likely right on target. Now that I think about, if I were in charge of returning shitbags like him back to face charges, I might want to wait his ass out. Just saying.

Most support. and HQ types in PsyOp do short, but frequent deployments. in 2003, I did 6 months in Iraq, back to Bragg, PLDC, 2 months at CentCom Main, Then back to Iraq for another 6 months…..barely 6 months turnaround. if it the Optempo hasnt changed since i left AD PsyOp, he probably got burned out on deploying aka “doing his job” and quit. pussy

@ 57 … I have collared and processed … after 30 days they are listed and there is a warrant. Deserters are big catches for warrants squads and the Army Provost Marshal loves it when you actually drive them to the base.

I served 2 years 7 months as a Marine I have no medals and married while I was in the Corps but I was lucky enough to go to Boot Camp and work with some of the Senior enlisted leaders today to whom one is my brother who just retired after 27 years. In addition I spent 5 years as a dependent and I just get crazy mad when I read about these people..

I’ve dealt with AWOL soldiers before and they’ve all had the balls to turn themselves into the unit they abandoned. We gave them crap duty till they were processed out, hell I even remember one who was a permanent CQ runner, 24 on 48 off or something. I’m sure this guy would send a complaint “to the army” calling all that cruel and unusually punishment. But little Micha has already established proved he is a self righteous coward. In the 30 plus days he’s been AWOL did he smoke too much pot he forgot how to get back to where he was stationed? That is the only conclusion i can come to considering he sees guys in camo hats behind every tree ready to spring a trap on him and take him “peacefully but not quietly”.

In ’88, I had a 5 year USMC enlistment. Dunno if the Army ever had them, or if they presently do.
