Weekend Open Thread
Friday, 24 April 1959, was just another day. Except, perhaps, at one particular location in Michigan.
The year 1959 was during the height of the Cold War. The Strategic Air Command existed then, and was flying – a lot.
On that date, Capt. John S. Lappo was the pilot for one of those SAC aircraft flying. He and his crew were returning to their home base – Lockbourne AFB, OH, which is today Rickenbacker ANGB – from a training mission. They were over Michigan, near the Straits of Mackinac.
From his cockpit, Capt. Lappo saw this:
Later, Lappo was asked about what happened next. When asked, he remarked: “. . . . I’ve always wanted to fly under a big bridge. I thought it would be the Golden Gate.”
That day apparently Lappo decided that Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge would do equally well. So, with a maximum of 155 feet of clearance between the bottom of the bridge and the water . . . he flew his aircraft under the freaking bridge.
Oh, did I mention he was flying one of these?
Yep: that day, Lappo was flying a a strategic bomber – a B-47 Stratojet. The aircraft is just over 107 feet long, has a wingspan of 116 feet – and is 28 feet tall at the tail.
Cojones muy grande. Cerebro? Tal vez no tanto.
The incident wasn’t widely reported at first. But the word got out, and eventually reached the USAF.
Predictably, the USAF “was not amused”. Seems Lappo had violated USAF regs by flying under that bridge.
Capt. Lappo was court-martialed for violating regulations on 10 August 1959. He was found guilty.
However, in that day and age you still had senior officers who had a sense of humor – and valued risk-taking, at least to a point. So Lappo wasn’t “body slammed” as he might have been today.
Lappo’s wings were revoked – permanently. He never flew for the USAF again.
But the USAF didn’t kick Lappo to the curb, either. He was allowed to continue serving. He did – and was promoted twice afterwards, retiring as a Lt. Col. in 1972.
Lt. Col. John S. Lappo, USAF (Ret), passed away in 2003 at the age of 83. His obituary made prominent mention of his 1959 “underflight” exploit – though it appears to have gotten the date wrong (they seem to have listed his court-martial date as the date he flew under the Mackinac Bridge).

Think I’m kidding about the above? Think again. It’s not a “tall tale” – the above really happened.

Jon The, what I want to know is where they “found” the votes. Having conducted poll worker training in Ohio, I recall paper ballots but saw electronic iVotronics on TV and they do not “lose” votes. Other “found” votes could be in the form of paper provisional or absentee ballots.

Here’s this week’s trivia column, and I open with a recognition of a dear friend’s passing. Coming so soon on the heels of Jonn’s passing, it was like a double-whammy. I dedicated the column once to Jonn … this one’s dedicated to my friend and trivia teammate. Enjoy. DID YOU KNOW…? We’re a pretty tightly-knit group, and when odd things happen with us, it takes precedence over the game and the trivia. Last week, one of the linchpins of our group passed away. David Fowler, a LaGrange-based attorney and judge, was one of the best people I’ve ever come to know in my life, and he quickly became a good friend once I joined the team. He and I shared many laughs over the years , as well as many serious conversations about the world. I’m going to miss him very, very much. David passed away last Tuesday of a heart attack. He was 55, five years younger than I am. I am taking very serious notice of this, and plan to adjust my own personal health care accordingly – as much as I can, anyway. I’ve always believed that in times like this, the best thing for those of us left behind to do is to carry on with as much of a normal life as we can. I am certain David would want me to continue with this week’s column, though – to be honest – I don’t feel very much like being trivial and funny right now. Speaking of comets, Comet PAN-Starrs is green, and has been emitting small explosions in the last month or two.
I dunno, Sara … I never bought that comet excuse. Then again, I have no other coherent explanation for the “Wow!” signal, so it’s as good a suggestion as any.

Pretty sure you’re joshing, BigJohn. There are two genders, and only two genders, biologically speaking. If one is confused about their particular natural assignment, I hope they receive council and assistance to cure them of their mental illness, instead of enabling them in their disorder.

Dr. Aryeh Nusbacher is a well known military historian and featured all the time on The Military History Channel.
Dr Nusbacher is now known as Lynette following a sex change operation in 2007.
The crime of this is that these people spend their entire lives hating themselves, the way they look, the way the act and the way they think.
Usually, what happens to them is that they understand that no matter what is between their legs and how big their tits are, they still have the things that make the sexes different.
They have man hands, man feet, man Adam’s apple, a man’s voice and the only thing that has changed in them is their opinion of themselves and the way the rest of the normal world looks at them now that they have made such a public spectacle of themselves.
This only compounds the self loathing they have and they struggle the rest of their days dealing with their own stupidity. Many of them end up as suicides or as addicts and alcoholics or simply just going crazy.
Telling kids that they can choose their own gender is child abuse of the worst kind.
Children are not able to understand the concepts forced on them by self aggrandizing adults that push these things on them simply to make themselves feel better about themselves.
It is the act of ultimate selfishness to force your subhuman desires on people as young as 5 years old.

Example (?): Girls until a certain age are consider too young and not mature enough to consent to having sex. Yet, even younger girls and boys are considered sufficiently mature to decide what sex they prefer to be. How can an ‘X’ year old be too young to consent to having sex, but the same ‘X’ year old IS mature enough to choosing to have a different sex? They are setting themselves up for a lifetime of self loathing.
Example of flawed liberal reasoning. I’m hoping this nation is not too far gone, that we can reverse course and let the morals and sanity of previous generations prevail. They weren’t perfect, but compared to today?
Just because the whack-o gender warriors get the most publicity, it does not mean they are in the majority in these things.
The loudest noisemakers and squeakiest wheels sometimes bite off more than they can chew.
The truly sad reality is that there really are some babies born who are not easily recognizable as male or female. The willfully confused and delusional are trivializing what those real families face.

There was a B-17 that flew under the Verona Bridge in Bucksport Maine. BGR was a ferry point to England and lots of bombers passed through there.

Looks like another Nifong is prosecuting the case. That the City Council is providing funding for Officer Darby’s defense speaks worlds. I think this looks like a case of suicide-by-cop, and the officer was put in a no-win situation.

And in following Commissioner Wretched lead, here are facts to pass on at a party when conversing with a stranger:
(1) The length of a man’s outspread arms is equal to his height…try it..
(2) The smallest width of the hand is equal to the smallest width of the foot between its joint into the leg and the insertion of the toes. Just hold your palm across the arch of your foot and see what happens.
(3) Your forearm and your foot are the same length. Be sure you take off your shoes and socks before trying this. Try measuring the length of your forearm (from the crook of your elbow to your wrist) and compare it with the length of your foot. You’ll be surprised that they are the same length.

Anyone notice the case of the guy who tracked and fatally shot a prominent Houston doctor recently? What chaps me is that whenever anyone even enlists, never finishes any training, and screws up somehow – the media blasts “ex-Army vet kills” or “Army vet does XX”. Heck, the dead doc once treated George H.W. Bush, and that was all the news. But the doc’s killer had 30 years’ law enforcement experience.. not a peep.

*Picked up on this at a little bistro at Souda Bay, Crete. A grind or two of pepper, too. The feta is salty enough to carry the dish.

As often as I posted that crab cake recipe this week, I may as well make a double batch. If there are leftovers, well, you’ve had Eggs Benedict? Poached egg with Canadian bacon on a muffin, doused with Hollandaise sauce?

On this day in history, President Ronald Reagan signed into law The Civil Liberties Act of 1988 (Pub.L. 100–383, title I, August 10, 1988, 102 Stat. 904, 50a U.S.C. § 1989b et seq.). Among other provisions, it earmarked individual payments of $20,000 to go to surviving Japanese-Americans who were sent to internment camps by the U.S. Government during World War II.
Over 120,000 Japanese Americans of all ages had been forced from their homes in California, Washington, Oregon and Arizona pursuant to Executive Order 9066, issued by Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942, which decreed that no one of Japanese ancestry could be allowed to remain on the West coast of the U.S. during its war with Japan. Some Japanese Americans were simply relocated eastward, but most were forced into internment camps.
The 1988 act was sponsored by California’s Democratic Congressman Norman Mineta, an internee as a child, and Wyoming’s Republican Senator Alan K. Simpson, who first met Mineta while visiting an internment camp. The third co-sponsor was California Senator Pete Wilson. The bill was supported by the majority of Democrats in Congress, while the majority of Republicans voted against it.
Even after the passage of the bill authorizing a total of 1.25 billion dollars for distribution, appropriating funds for this purpose proved to be very difficult. In 1988, Reagan suggested allocating a sum of $20,000,000 of the national budget for redress payments, only enough to pay 1,000 individuals.
Finally, in 1990, a bill spearheaded by Senator and 442nd regiment veteran Daniel Inouye ensured that all redress payments would be made within the next three years. When it was discovered that there were about 80,000 eligible individuals instead of 60,000, the figure on which previous assessments had been made, more funds were allocated through the Civil Liberties Act Amendments of 1992.
The $20K checks were sent out in 1993. It was not much considering what the innocent Japanese/Americans lost during WWII (their homes, farms, crops, businesses,freedom, etc).
I was raised in California, and went to grammar school with sons and daughters of Japanese parents who had been interned. I don’t remember there being a lot of bitter resentment at the time. It’s not as if anybody was a victim of ethnic cleansing, nor were there common reports of physical mistreatment.
Also, comparatively as a culture, the Japanese have always seemed relatively stoic about things. Sometimes shit happens. It’s probably also fair to say that whatever collective guilt might have been in play over what happened to the Japanese in California during the war was more than balanced by the price of having a bunch of Marines getting greased on Guadalcanal.

Vincent H. Okamoto was born in a federal internment camp during World War II; the 10th child and the seventh son born to Japanese immigrants. All six of his older brothers served in the U.S. military. The eldest two fought in Europe during World War II with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a racially segregated unit of Japanese Americans that went on to become the become the most decorated unit in the annals of U.S. military history for its size and length of service. Another brother volunteered for the Marines and fought in the Korean War.
Okamoto graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of International Relations in 1967. He received his commission as a 2nd lieutenant of infantry from UCLA ROTC, where he rose to the rank of cadet colonel, was the first Japanese American to command the Bruin Rangers and was designated Distinguished Military Graduate in 1967.
He completed officer infantry school, ranger school and airborne training at Fort Benning in Georgia, and served with the 82nd Airborne Division before volunteering for duty in the Republic of South Vietnam.
In Vietnam he served as an infantry platoon leader, company commander and intelligence officer. Wounded in action three times, he received 14 combat decorations that included the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second-highest award for valor in combat. His other decorations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Army Commendation, and three Purple Hearts.
After three years of active duty, Okamoto left the Army with the rank of captain. He attended the USC School of Law and served as a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney for five years.
Judge Okamoto was designated UCLA ROTC Alumni Veteran of the Year in 2006. In 2007, he was inducted into the Army Ranger Hall of Fame, the first Japanese American so honored since World War II.
Also, lets not forget what the Japanese government and military did to our POW’s, the Chinese, and everyone else they conquered. If we had gone all Roman on their asses after their defeat, the survivors would have spent the rest of their lives as slaves. I have met a number of German POW’s where were interned here during the war. They all said they were treated very well here; and some said they didn’t want to go home after the war.

No thanks, I have plenty of Callinectes sapidus already. Been here so long I’m almost considered a native among the locals. Almost. They are a clannish bunch. So a bushel of live crabs is just a phone call away for me. Besides, a crab boil is really a social event, with potatoes, corn on the cob, sausage and the like in the mix, ’cause picking crab is an art unto itself. Normal people would starve to death, trying to eat just crab.
So I could go for a pound of picked “lump” crab meat, either way, instead.

Game on TV last night, I watched zero seconds of it. I assume the felon snowflakes protested, but I don’t care. As above, where the hell are these fucks as criminals shoot up the neighborhood or kill someone b/c they looked at them ‘wrong’. They are where the reverend al is: MIA. Preach a good game but don’t do shit to improve the lot of the people of color who they feel are being treated improperly. Some people, some groups of people are professional victims, who do nothing to change the perception others have of them. What is constantly ignored by those in the LSM is that no one who has a job is allowed to do protests and demonstrations at work, period, unless, of course, you are one of George Soros’s paid protesters/agent-provacatuers.
On THursday, I had a semi-annual wellness checkup at the Pensacola VA JACC. As always, it was “over the top” pleasant and beneficial. As my doctor, (a real cutie), asked me the basic questions, I most often answered with “what?”, after 3 or 4 of those replies she asked if I was hard of hearing, and I asked “what?”. She suggested that I have audiology take a look at me, and put in a consult. When she finished with me, she suggested I go upstairs to audiology and get an appointment. When I got up there and told the clerk the deal, he asked if I could hang around for awhile. I did, and in 5 minutes got in and got my hearing tested. I will return September 17th to pick up my new hearing aids. I punched in my travel information, and was out of the building an hour and a half after walking in for my 0930 appointment. My VA care is all that I need for healthcare.

I was surprised when I got fitted for my hearing aid for my fight ear and the Bill I received for the aid. TRICARE did not cover the cost…🤔
No, AnotherPat, I don’t have to pay for them, or for the batteries, or service down the road. That may be standard procedure or it may be that with my MEANS score, (my only income is Social Security), that they picked up the tab, ($12,000+/-)
Depending on your VA disability rating and your service connected issues, you may be able to get the hearing aids and supplies at no cost.
Hearing is one of the biggest service connected disability issues, and my local VA has a lot of people coming in to get new or replacement hearing aids.
Frankie & Jon: Thank you for the feedback and guidance on the Hearing Aid. Received my last set at a Navy Hospital. Was told it was outdated and that I should buy new ones. I do get a discount because of my retiree status…was just surprised I had to pay. Battery costs comes out of my pocket. Am looking into other options. Thank you again for your input.

Yes, thanks. All cylinders firing per spec after they zapped me, and the difference in my stamina (and outlook!) is remarkable. Doc still wants to run a camera up a vein to scope my heart out, but that’s so common it’s an outpatient procedure.

He is holding steady for now. After the choking scare while I was out of state, he’s been on a PEG tube for food, but this past week they started him on puree again.
Fighting with Medicaid about how much income he really has (two different retirement accounts from different school systems) – gets tiresome. Then they moved him (without my input) to a different Medicaid program that required him to travel 2 hours to a urologist, rather than the 30 minutes down the road.
Still trying to keep the wheels on the wagon. We have had some good news on some of the other familial fronts so overall I’m feeling pretty blessed.

Yup; I remember Marine officers calling Marine SNCOs pussies as being a common occurrence in the squadrons/infantry battalion that I served in throughout my career. Happened all the time.
I always found that being a raving asshole towards my fellow Marines went a long way towards maintaining unit cohesion, trust, and loyalty. It’s a style of leadership that I’ve long admired.

Frankie: Good news re your hearing aids. I also go to the Pensacola VA, as does The Russian, Mrs. HMC Retired. We both HAD the same doctor but she is leaving this month, after being there less than two years. I’ve also been pleased overall with the care. I’ve been sent out to civilian specialty providers under the Veteran’s Choice Program an awful lot the past few years, even for dental care.
If you have tinnitus, there is a good chance you will receive an almost automatic 10% for hearing loss. This is particularly true of you served in high noise NEC/MOS.
I don’t have tinnitus, just natural degenerative hearing loss, with my advanced age. I don’t see it as service connected. I was issued ear plugs when I became a Single Rotor Turbine Engine Helicopter Crewchief, (MOS 627.27), which I kept packaged, in the top tray of the tool box. Unlike a Non-CPO, no longer breathing stunt pilot, one time Navy PH-2 I wasn’t ordered onto the deck of a Flat Top with out ear plugs, inducing tinnitus. I don’t think that the Army owes me for this.
Disgusting, confusing, or something true story. Had to stop by one of those “beauty supply” stores last week for something that was only available there. Had not been in the place for a couple of years so was not prepared to be shocked and dismayed with the experience.
Pretty much found what I needed but did have a question. Turned around and a fat (presumably) gay guy with purple hair smiled and asked if he could help me. He actually could and did. A very pleasant interaction. So far, so good. Then I noticed a coven of gay guys in the middle of the store. Easy enough to avoid them. One of them even noticed me looking around and kindly directed me toward the rest room.
When I remembered something else is when it got REALLY weird. Back generally where I started in the store I was approached by an obvious cross dresser. Big guy. Really big guy. Not fat at all, which was kinda scary. This guy could probably take me out before I could get turned around to run!
And he didn’t seem to like me very much. Wearing 40 pounds of makeup on a frame which should have been playing professional basketball he was an imposing figure even in a dress.
Oh, well. Some things are just better not seen in daylight.
