Weekend Open Thread
Friday, 24 April 1959, was just another day. Except, perhaps, at one particular location in Michigan.
The year 1959 was during the height of the Cold War. The Strategic Air Command existed then, and was flying – a lot.
On that date, Capt. John S. Lappo was the pilot for one of those SAC aircraft flying. He and his crew were returning to their home base – Lockbourne AFB, OH, which is today Rickenbacker ANGB – from a training mission. They were over Michigan, near the Straits of Mackinac.
From his cockpit, Capt. Lappo saw this:
Later, Lappo was asked about what happened next. When asked, he remarked: “. . . . I’ve always wanted to fly under a big bridge. I thought it would be the Golden Gate.”
That day apparently Lappo decided that Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge would do equally well. So, with a maximum of 155 feet of clearance between the bottom of the bridge and the water . . . he flew his aircraft under the freaking bridge.
Oh, did I mention he was flying one of these?
Yep: that day, Lappo was flying a a strategic bomber – a B-47 Stratojet. The aircraft is just over 107 feet long, has a wingspan of 116 feet – and is 28 feet tall at the tail.
Cojones muy grande. Cerebro? Tal vez no tanto.
The incident wasn’t widely reported at first. But the word got out, and eventually reached the USAF.
Predictably, the USAF “was not amused”. Seems Lappo had violated USAF regs by flying under that bridge.
Capt. Lappo was court-martialed for violating regulations on 10 August 1959. He was found guilty.
However, in that day and age you still had senior officers who had a sense of humor – and valued risk-taking, at least to a point. So Lappo wasn’t “body slammed” as he might have been today.
Lappo’s wings were revoked – permanently. He never flew for the USAF again.
But the USAF didn’t kick Lappo to the curb, either. He was allowed to continue serving. He did – and was promoted twice afterwards, retiring as a Lt. Col. in 1972.
Lt. Col. John S. Lappo, USAF (Ret), passed away in 2003 at the age of 83. His obituary made prominent mention of his 1959 “underflight” exploit – though it appears to have gotten the date wrong (they seem to have listed his court-martial date as the date he flew under the Mackinac Bridge).
. . .
Think I’m kidding about the above? Think again. It’s not a “tall tale” – the above really happened.
Enough YGBSM! history for today. Enjoy yer WOT, everyone. (smile)
Category: Open thread, YGBSM!!
First, “finding” votes is bad, no matter what side it is on.
Second, both sides have done it, don’t get all high and mighty about it when it hurts your side.
Third, this is why we need better safeguards, to include a voter ID.
I know that my “First” comment is WAY off topic, but my FB feed is blowing up because of the topic, so that is where I went today.
ummm….. Weekend Open Thread is there anything off topic? Congrats on the “first”
Well done on First Brother. Nothing off topic on the WOT.
Jon The, what I want to know is where they “found” the votes. Having conducted poll worker training in Ohio, I recall paper ballots but saw electronic iVotronics on TV and they do not “lose” votes. Other “found” votes could be in the form of paper provisional or absentee ballots.
Congrats Jon, may you enjoy your week on the throne! Have a great weekend all of you dickweeds here at TAH!
So I’m a dickweed now?
GREAT! I spent far too long at the rank of “fucknut”….
2nd
Missed it by … THAT much.
Got a new gun last week. XD-S Mod 2. Got a new recoil spring for the AKM.
Pew pew pew. 🤗
I’m waiting for the wife to graduate college so I can restart my collecting.
How does it perform?
Wow top ten
Here, present and accounted for.

“HI DICKWEEDS!!!”
Have a lovely weekend.
Here’s this week’s trivia column, and I open with a recognition of a dear friend’s passing. Coming so soon on the heels of Jonn’s passing, it was like a double-whammy. I dedicated the column once to Jonn … this one’s dedicated to my friend and trivia teammate. Enjoy. DID YOU KNOW…? Did Steve Jobs try to design a pop-up cartoon character in early Macintosh computers? By Commissioner Wretched As I have said many times in this column, I am a member of a trivia team that plays on Thursday evenings in LaGrange. We’re a pretty tightly-knit group, and when odd things happen with us, it takes precedence over the game and the trivia. Last week, one of the linchpins of our group passed away. David Fowler, a LaGrange-based attorney and judge, was one of the best people I’ve ever come to know in my life, and he quickly became a good friend once I joined the team. He and I shared many laughs over the years , as well as many serious conversations about the world. I’m going to miss him very, very much. David passed away last Tuesday of a heart attack. He was 55, five years younger than I am. I am taking very serious notice of this, and plan to adjust my own personal health care accordingly – as much as I can, anyway. I’ve always believed that in times like this, the best thing for those of us left behind to do is to carry on with as much of a normal life as we can. I am certain David would want me to continue with this week’s column, though – to be honest – I don’t feel very much like being trivial and funny right now. But I will … and I dedicate this column to the memory of my friend and trivia teammate, David Fowler. E-mail if you like, at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com. I’ll answer. Off to the trivia… Did you know … … lobsters chew with their stomachs? The lobster has a set of teeth in its stomach with which it grinds up its food.… Read more »
Ah, the ‘wow’ signal! Hydrogen gas emissions in a specific spectrum. The reason astronomers quit spooking themselves over it is that they found more signals from other comets besides those two.
Speaking of comets, Comet PAN-Starrs is green, and has been emitting small explosions in the last month or two.
I dunno, Sara … I never bought that comet excuse. Then again, I have no other coherent explanation for the “Wow!” signal, so it’s as good a suggestion as any.
Green comet, eh? Why does that make me think of kitchen cleanser?
Ha! Pun noted, but PAN-Starrs really does show up green in photos.
Our sympathies for your loss CW. As we have all had it re-emphasized recently, none of know when our time is up. If you haven’t been taking care, you need to do so. We have gotten used to enjoying the trivia posts and look forward to more. Deo Vindice
Many thanks, my friend.
Seldom heard other than down here. L O S member?

I don’t know who did the nifty formatting for the trivia column, but THANK YOU! It looks great – actually better than it does in the newspapers that carry it!
Off to a slow start on Friday? Gotta be in the top 20!

Make America BLEED again (for her sins)!!!!!!
And Hats off to Hondo for an excellent example of decadent, capitalist-pig cowboying!
You will be the first in the reeducation camp, assuming you’re not expunged first.
Amazingly, she declined the challenge from Ben Shapiro.
Yeah. Shocked face. This.
And even less surprisingly, she could show up at a rally sporting a Che shirt (and who’s to say it hasn’t happened yet) and still win her district by 40 points.
I’m sure she had the dead people voting bloc as soon as she got the D-rat nomination.
Ben Shapiro would devastate her. Cortez is dis-functionally retarded, to wit:

I’m surprised Junior hasn’t risen to right this injustice!
PRESENT!!!
Happy Friday, ladies and gentlemen of TAH.
What about the “others” sex?
Pretty sure you’re joshing, BigJohn. There are two genders, and only two genders, biologically speaking. If one is confused about their particular natural assignment, I hope they receive council and assistance to cure them of their mental illness, instead of enabling them in their disorder.
If I had a dollar for every gender I’d have $2 and a handful of counterfeits!
Dr. Aryeh Nusbacher is a well known military historian and featured all the time on The Military History Channel.
Dr Nusbacher is now known as Lynette following a sex change operation in 2007.
The crime of this is that these people spend their entire lives hating themselves, the way they look, the way the act and the way they think.
Usually, what happens to them is that they understand that no matter what is between their legs and how big their tits are, they still have the things that make the sexes different.
They have man hands, man feet, man Adam’s apple, a man’s voice and the only thing that has changed in them is their opinion of themselves and the way the rest of the normal world looks at them now that they have made such a public spectacle of themselves.
This only compounds the self loathing they have and they struggle the rest of their days dealing with their own stupidity. Many of them end up as suicides or as addicts and alcoholics or simply just going crazy.
Telling kids that they can choose their own gender is child abuse of the worst kind.
Children are not able to understand the concepts forced on them by self aggrandizing adults that push these things on them simply to make themselves feel better about themselves.
It is the act of ultimate selfishness to force your subhuman desires on people as young as 5 years old.
Preach it, Brother, preach it.
Example (?): Girls until a certain age are consider too young and not mature enough to consent to having sex. Yet, even younger girls and boys are considered sufficiently mature to decide what sex they prefer to be. How can an ‘X’ year old be too young to consent to having sex, but the same ‘X’ year old IS mature enough to choosing to have a different sex? They are setting themselves up for a lifetime of self loathing.
Example of flawed liberal reasoning. I’m hoping this nation is not too far gone, that we can reverse course and let the morals and sanity of previous generations prevail. They weren’t perfect, but compared to today?
Just because the whack-o gender warriors get the most publicity, it does not mean they are in the majority in these things.
The loudest noisemakers and squeakiest wheels sometimes bite off more than they can chew.
The truly sad reality is that there really are some babies born who are not easily recognizable as male or female. The willfully confused and delusional are trivializing what those real families face.
Twentieth of the top 20.

Of course, we’ll be standing at the National Anthem unlike the NFCLSS…
(National Football Clown League Second Stringers)…
Hondo, I’d still say some crazed flying that tops the Mackinac Bridge stunt was the time in the Spring of 1944 when a pilot named Bill Overstreet in a P-51 chased a German Me-109 under the Eiffel Tower in Paris:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2533373/WWII-fighter-pilot-flew-THROUGH-Eiffel-Tower-dies-Virginia-aged-92.html
There was a B-17 that flew under the Verona Bridge in Bucksport Maine. BGR was a ferry point to England and lots of bombers passed through there.
In this article about the MCCS-Okinawa Bodybuilding competition, does Contestant #26 “swimtrunks” look a bit odd, i.e photoshopped?:
https://www.stripes.com/news/pacific/sexually-charged-behavior-draws-outrage-at-mccs-okinawa-bodybuilding-competition-1.54189
BTW, there are pics of the ladies posted there as well.
What do you all think of the article?
Photoshopped? Hell, to my eyes, contestant #26 doesn’t have any legs at all!!
Must be a LT Dan CGI wannabe/s
Claw, I think they changed the story to Ernest Borgnine, so am reposting the link again so others can see the weird picture and read the story:

😅🤣😂👏👏 about LT Dan…
What do I think of the article? Had I been a judge for the women’s division it would have been expected of me to say, “Alright ladies, improve your chance of winning. Show us some tits!”
Jarhead, all I can say is 😂🤣😅!!!
Have a safe weekend, buttwipes.
Who has the Yef watch?
HMC Ret:
Yef said he would be back on Monday buffering the floors.
Yef Watch….say, you gave me a great idea that I could sell on Shark Tank..gotta run to the basement to figure this all out (thinking of timepieces, buffering material, floor wax, Bud-Lites)…😉
Yef said he has some kind of school he’s got to get through.
We want him to get good grades, don’t we?
Do you all remember this story about Kenneth Richard Devore, a VA worker who conned a Disabled Vet in having him sign the Vet’s Will that made Devore the Beneficary? I think he beats Wilted Willy’s Con Brother by a mile. Here is the orignial TAH post from last June 2017: https://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=73333 Here is the update to that post with more info: “Federal Jury Convicts Former VA Field Examiner and OPM Investigator Kenneth Richard Devore of Fraud” “GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – On July 25, 2018, following a six-day trial in U.S. District Court, Kenneth Richard Devore, 44, of Jonesborough, Tennessee, was convicted of wire fraud, mail fraud, financial conflict of interest, theft of public money, and making false statements in matters within the jurisdiction of the United States. Sentencing is set for 10:00 a.m., November 5, 2018, before the Honorable Judge Pamela L. Reeves in U.S. District Court in Greeneville. Devore was detained pending sentencing. Wire fraud and mail fraud both carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Theft of public money carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Financial conflict of interest and false statements both carry a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. According to evidence presented at trial, in 2015, while acting as a field examiner for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Devore schemed to defraud a disabled and incompetent veteran of over $680,000. Under the VA’s Fiduciary Program, field examiners are employed to help protect the financial assets of veterans who are unable to take care of themselves. As such, field examiners conduct on-site fact-finding examinations to ascertain the veteran’s income and assets and to observe his mental condition, living arrangement, and social adjustment. While assigned to a disabled veteran in Knoxville, Tennessee, Devore used his position to convince that veteran that he needed a Last Will and Testament (will). Devore then drafted the will and deceptively inserted his own name as the sole beneficiary of the veteran’s financial bank… Read more »
Yes Pat, but this asshat was caught and put in prison! My fucking brother is still getting his $3200 a month and counting! I would still venture a bet nobody has conned the VA out of more money for a longer period of time! I will celebrate when this asshole is caught and convicted! I would even buy everyone here a cold beverage of their choice!!!
WW: I predict we will be reading about your brother oneday in a DOJ Report…he will slip up! Have you ever contacted ABC’s 20/20 or CBS 60 Minutes or NBC Dateline about him or his local news station in Colorado?
Please don’t give up!
How’s the leg? Physical Therapy now?
Yup, I have tried them all and nobody cares. The leg is doing better now, done with therapy, just having to learn how to walk again. Thanks for asking! 🙂
This story has been on my radar when it was published a week ago: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/08/03/alabama-officer-charged-with-murder-in-death-suicidal-man.html “Alabama officer charged with murder in death of suicidal man” HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – “An Alabama police officer on Friday was charged with murder in the shooting death of an armed man who told police he was suicidal. Huntsville Police Officer William Darby, 25, was indicted on murder charges for the April 3 shooting of 49-year-old Jeffrey Parker. Darby was one of the three police officers who responded to a report of a suicidal man with a gun. Police said that Darby shot Parker after commands to drop the firearm were not followed. A police review board initially cleared Darby in the shooting, but Madison County District Attorney Rob Broussard told news outlets that his office became concerned the shooting wasn’t justified. The case was presented to a grand jury which returned the indictment. “Upon reviewing the file, we had great concern about what occurred there in the house,” Broussard told local news outlets in a press conference. Broussard declined to discuss the specifics of what happened in the shooting. “Usually what you are looking at is whether an officer reasonably feared for his life before he was forced to use deadly physical force. And on these particular facts of the case, we had concern that this was not a justified shooting,” the prosecutor said. Huntsville Police Chief Mark McMurray on Friday defended Darby’s actions, saying he has the “full support” of the department. “Officer Darby was called upon to make a split-second decision, a decision in a nightmare scenario the likes of which most people will never ever experience,” McMurray said in a press conference. “He is by no means a murderer.” McMurray told news outlets that Darby has been relieved of duties and is working in an “administrative capacity” pending the trial. It’s unclear from court records if Darby has obtained a lawyer. There is body camera footage of the shooting from the three officers that responded to the scene, Broussard said. The video has not been released to the public. Grand jurors saw… Read more »
Looks like another Nifong is prosecuting the case. That the City Council is providing funding for Officer Darby’s defense speaks worlds. I think this looks like a case of suicide-by-cop, and the officer was put in a no-win situation.
Waiting on the body cam video.
Sounds like a DA who wants to make a name for themselves. No way the officer will be convicted.
From what’s presented, it’s a textbook shooting scenario.
And in following Commissioner Wretched lead, here are facts to pass on at a party when conversing with a stranger:
(1) The length of a man’s outspread arms is equal to his height…try it..
(2) The smallest width of the hand is equal to the smallest width of the foot between its joint into the leg and the insertion of the toes. Just hold your palm across the arch of your foot and see what happens.
(3) Your forearm and your foot are the same length. Be sure you take off your shoes and socks before trying this. Try measuring the length of your forearm (from the crook of your elbow to your wrist) and compare it with the length of your foot. You’ll be surprised that they are the same length.
Pretty cool facts, Pat! Thanks for the back-up!
You are welcome, CW. I look forward in reading your trivia every week. Always learn something new and they are fun and interesting to read!
Hope to see you on Jeopardy down the road!
😎
WOT, huh? I’m prowling around, getting the pantry/fridge/freezer stocked, so I don’t care!
Anyone notice the case of the guy who tracked and fatally shot a prominent Houston doctor recently? What chaps me is that whenever anyone even enlists, never finishes any training, and screws up somehow – the media blasts “ex-Army vet kills” or “Army vet does XX”. Heck, the dead doc once treated George H.W. Bush, and that was all the news. But the doc’s killer had 30 years’ law enforcement experience.. not a peep.
You mean like this guy?

32th and Honorary First once again. Happy Weekend, fellow Dickweeds!
Crab cakes on today’s menu, with ripe, sliced tomatoes (with a little olive oil, feta cheese, and shredded basil*) and Silver Queen corn-on-the-cob. Crusty bread and a chilled white to go with. It’s Summer!
*Picked up on this at a little bistro at Souda Bay, Crete. A grind or two of pepper, too. The feta is salty enough to carry the dish.
Save some for us!!!!🦀🍽
As often as I posted that crab cake recipe this week, I may as well make a double batch. If there are leftovers, well, you’ve had Eggs Benedict? Poached egg with Canadian bacon on a muffin, doused with Hollandaise sauce?
Pitch the bacon and slap a leftover crab cake on that muffin, instead.
THAT is worth getting up for!
will be gathering up the final pieces and parts for the crab cakes and the chocolate volcanoes tomorrow. Planning on hurting my self in a food orgy. Doctors trying to tell us geezers what to eat or not eat, nurses saying eat what you want “in moderation.” Thanks again for those posts.
Ex-PH2 is the duty gourmet in these parts. I’m just a semi-talented amateur, self taught on Navy P-3 Orion deployments.
And you are quite welcome.
Today, 30 year ago, 10 August 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act
Of 1988
https://www.google.com/amp/s/legallegacy.wordpress.com/2015/08/10/august-10-1988-president-reagan-signs-the-civil-liberties-act-of-1988/amp/
On this day in history, President Ronald Reagan signed into law The Civil Liberties Act of 1988 (Pub.L. 100–383, title I, August 10, 1988, 102 Stat. 904, 50a U.S.C. § 1989b et seq.). Among other provisions, it earmarked individual payments of $20,000 to go to surviving Japanese-Americans who were sent to internment camps by the U.S. Government during World War II.
Over 120,000 Japanese Americans of all ages had been forced from their homes in California, Washington, Oregon and Arizona pursuant to Executive Order 9066, issued by Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942, which decreed that no one of Japanese ancestry could be allowed to remain on the West coast of the U.S. during its war with Japan. Some Japanese Americans were simply relocated eastward, but most were forced into internment camps.
The 1988 act was sponsored by California’s Democratic Congressman Norman Mineta, an internee as a child, and Wyoming’s Republican Senator Alan K. Simpson, who first met Mineta while visiting an internment camp. The third co-sponsor was California Senator Pete Wilson. The bill was supported by the majority of Democrats in Congress, while the majority of Republicans voted against it.
Even after the passage of the bill authorizing a total of 1.25 billion dollars for distribution, appropriating funds for this purpose proved to be very difficult. In 1988, Reagan suggested allocating a sum of $20,000,000 of the national budget for redress payments, only enough to pay 1,000 individuals.
Finally, in 1990, a bill spearheaded by Senator and 442nd regiment veteran Daniel Inouye ensured that all redress payments would be made within the next three years. When it was discovered that there were about 80,000 eligible individuals instead of 60,000, the figure on which previous assessments had been made, more funds were allocated through the Civil Liberties Act Amendments of 1992.
The $20K checks were sent out in 1993. It was not much considering what the innocent Japanese/Americans lost during WWII (their homes, farms, crops, businesses, freedom, etc).
I was raised in California, and went to grammar school with sons and daughters of Japanese parents who had been interned. I don’t remember there being a lot of bitter resentment at the time. It’s not as if anybody was a victim of ethnic cleansing, nor were there common reports of physical mistreatment.
Also, comparatively as a culture, the Japanese have always seemed relatively stoic about things. Sometimes shit happens. It’s probably also fair to say that whatever collective guilt might have been in play over what happened to the Japanese in California during the war was more than balanced by the price of having a bunch of Marines getting greased on Guadalcanal.
Thank You, Perry for sharing that.
Speaking of the Japanese interment camps during WWII:
Found this very interesting story of Vincent Okamoto, Los Angeles County Superior Court judge, decorated Vietnam vet, author and community leader:
http://www.rafu.com/2018/08/vincent-okamoto-named-nisei-week-grand-marshal/
Vincent H. Okamoto was born in a federal internment camp during World War II; the 10th child and the seventh son born to Japanese immigrants. All six of his older brothers served in the U.S. military. The eldest two fought in Europe during World War II with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a racially segregated unit of Japanese Americans that went on to become the become the most decorated unit in the annals of U.S. military history for its size and length of service. Another brother volunteered for the Marines and fought in the Korean War.
Okamoto graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of International Relations in 1967. He received his commission as a 2nd lieutenant of infantry from UCLA ROTC, where he rose to the rank of cadet colonel, was the first Japanese American to command the Bruin Rangers and was designated Distinguished Military Graduate in 1967.
He completed officer infantry school, ranger school and airborne training at Fort Benning in Georgia, and served with the 82nd Airborne Division before volunteering for duty in the Republic of South Vietnam.
In Vietnam he served as an infantry platoon leader, company commander and intelligence officer. Wounded in action three times, he received 14 combat decorations that included the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second-highest award for valor in combat. His other decorations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Army Commendation, and three Purple Hearts.
After three years of active duty, Okamoto left the Army with the rank of captain. He attended the USC School of Law and served as a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney for five years.
Judge Okamoto was designated UCLA ROTC Alumni Veteran of the Year in 2006. In 2007, he was inducted into the Army Ranger Hall of Fame, the first Japanese American so honored since World War II.
Also, lets not forget what the Japanese government and military did to our POW’s, the Chinese, and everyone else they conquered. If we had gone all Roman on their asses after their defeat, the survivors would have spent the rest of their lives as slaves. I have met a number of German POW’s where were interned here during the war. They all said they were treated very well here; and some said they didn’t want to go home after the war.
rgr769:
What brought this on that has nothing to with the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 and Judge Okamoto? 🤔
Congratulations to all CPO selectees. Initiations are back after being banned for several years, so ‘enjoy’ yours.
Here’s hoping Big Navy pulls their heads out of their asses and lets the Chiefs Mess run their divisions the way they SHOULD be run.
This touchy-feely shit has gone on for far too long.
Well, another season of NOT watching the NFL in our houhehold due to narcissims of several players who don’t believe in Rules.

Will continue to watch College Football games, i.e. “ROLL TIDE!” and “GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY”!😎
AP, love you like a brother, but you have that back-assward.
I know you doggies are a little slow, but are friendly and trainable. Usually. Now follow me,
“Go Navy, Beat Army!”
See? Much better.
AW1Ed Out.
Got a deal for you, Ed.
IF Army loses, the Pat family will send you live fresh, blue crabs directly to your home.
BUT, when Navy loses, the Ed family will have to send the Pat family your famous Crab Cakes, already cooked….with the chocolate lava cakes…
Deal? 👿😉😈
No thanks, I have plenty of Callinectes sapidus already. Been here so long I’m almost considered a native among the locals. Almost. They are a clannish bunch. So a bushel of live crabs is just a phone call away for me. Besides, a crab boil is really a social event, with potatoes, corn on the cob, sausage and the like in the mix, ’cause picking crab is an art unto itself. Normal people would starve to death, trying to eat just crab.
So I could go for a pound of picked “lump” crab meat, either way, instead.
((over))
I also say SCREW THE NFL, where the hell were they and their “protests” during the off-season? Where the living FUCK were they during times like last weekend when 60+ people were shot in the wonderful liberal utopia of Chicongo? FUCK the National Felon League.
Preach It, API!👏👏
AMEN: Buncha over grown, overpaid, underworked cry baby punks.
Game on TV last night, I watched zero seconds of it. I assume the felon snowflakes protested, but I don’t care. As above, where the hell are these fucks as criminals shoot up the neighborhood or kill someone b/c they looked at them ‘wrong’. They are where the reverend al is: MIA. Preach a good game but don’t do shit to improve the lot of the people of color who they feel are being treated improperly. Some people, some groups of people are professional victims, who do nothing to change the perception others have of them. If you act as a lowlife thug, honorable people will consider you a lowlife thug. If you spend your life on welfare, guess what? You are a welfare queen and others will have a lower opinion of you. I’m not talking about those who need a ‘short term’ assistance. I’m talking who look at welfare and public assistance and food stamps as a career path. OK, rant over. Anyway, I think I’m probably preaching to the choir.
What is constantly ignored by those in the LSM is that no one who has a job is allowed to do protests and demonstrations at work, period, unless, of course, you are one of George Soros’s paid protesters/agent-provacatuers.
On THursday, I had a semi-annual wellness checkup at the Pensacola VA JACC. As always, it was “over the top” pleasant and beneficial. As my doctor, (a real cutie), asked me the basic questions, I most often answered with “what?”, after 3 or 4 of those replies she asked if I was hard of hearing, and I asked “what?”. She suggested that I have audiology take a look at me, and put in a consult. When she finished with me, she suggested I go upstairs to audiology and get an appointment. When I got up there and told the clerk the deal, he asked if I could hang around for awhile. I did, and in 5 minutes got in and got my hearing tested. I will return September 17th to pick up my new hearing aids. I punched in my travel information, and was out of the building an hour and a half after walking in for my 0930 appointment. My VA care is all that I need for healthcare.
Frankie, question. I don’t use the VA since I am retired and have TRICARE PRIME (Or Humana…they keep changing things..sigh)
Do you have to pay for your hearing aids?
I was surprised when I got fitted for my hearing aid for my fight ear and the Bill I received for the aid. TRICARE did not cover the cost…🤔
No, AnotherPat, I don’t have to pay for them, or for the batteries, or service down the road. That may be standard procedure or it may be that with my MEANS score, (my only income is Social Security), that they picked up the tab, ($12,000+/-)
Depending on your VA disability rating and your service connected issues, you may be able to get the hearing aids and supplies at no cost.
Hearing is one of the biggest service connected disability issues, and my local VA has a lot of people coming in to get new or replacement hearing aids.
Frankie & Jon: Thank you for the feedback and guidance on the Hearing Aid. Received my last set at a Navy Hospital. Was told it was outdated and that I should buy new ones. I do get a discount because of my retiree status…was just surprised I had to pay. Battery costs comes out of my pocket. Am looking into other options. Thank you again for your input.
Roger that!!
Pretty much the same here. (Butler PA)
AW1Ed: I might have you this before, but if not: The ticker is doing ok now? Everthing fixed?
Yes, thanks. All cylinders firing per spec after they zapped me, and the difference in my stamina (and outlook!) is remarkable. Doc still wants to run a camera up a vein to scope my heart out, but that’s so common it’s an outpatient procedure.
Yeah, feeling mucho better, thanks again.
Great to hear! I know the AW1Ed household was jumping with joy! Thank you for the feedback and holding the TAH Fort. I feel as if we have all becomes Pillars of this Fortress with great leaders such as yourself to guide us. We need an Army Soldier,an Airman and a Coastie to step up to the plate to balance us out as a team. Not going to volunteer or mention any names, even though I can think of a few, strong troops within our team…
Heh! Hardly a great leader, just a guy who stepped up when Jonn was hospitalized a couple years ago, and needed grist for the TAH mill. I take it as an honor to be here, helping where I can. Dave’s scary “you know what you could be in for” phone call was appreciated, as was his stick and rudder in my first steps here. So ya’ll are stuck with me until I get fired.
Good news!
Thanks, Graybeard. Now the hard part- the lifestyle changes I need to do. Dammit, I LIKE bacon!
Now I understand those grumpy old bastards better. Seems I am one.
Now all you whipper-snappers get off my lawn!
Graybeard, hope your brother is doing ok as well. You are one of our Pillars of strengths as well, so we still need Civilian (or Texas) feedback as well to balance the TAH Blog. Good to see you back.
Thanks, AP.
He is holding steady for now. After the choking scare while I was out of state, he’s been on a PEG tube for food, but this past week they started him on puree again.
Fighting with Medicaid about how much income he really has (two different retirement accounts from different school systems) – gets tiresome. Then they moved him (without my input) to a different Medicaid program that required him to travel 2 hours to a urologist, rather than the 30 minutes down the road.
Still trying to keep the wheels on the wagon. We have had some good news on some of the other familial fronts so overall I’m feeling pretty blessed.
“Air Force Fires Wing Commander Amid Financial Misconduct Probe”
https://www.military.com/daily-news/2018/08/06/air-force-fires-wing-commander-amid-financial-misconduct-probe.html
“The U.S. Air Force has removed the commander of the 60th Air Mobility Wing at Travis Air Force Base, California, pending an ongoing investigation, the service said Monday.
Maj. Gen. Sam Barrett, 18th Air Force commander, relieved Col. Ethan Griffin of command Monday after losing “trust and confidence” in Griffin’s ability to lead the wing, officials said in a release.
Griffin, who took command of the 60th in July, is under investigation by the Office of Special Investigations for “alleged personal financial misconduct,” the release said.
“The Air Force’s core values are at the center of who we are as airmen, and we hold ourselves accountable to those values. The decision to remove a commander is not an easy one, but this is the best step to ensure continued mission success and care for the airmen of Team Travis,” Barrett said in the statement.
“who took command of the 60th in July”. Damn. Thant didn’t take long. We’re barely into August!
Slow to bat again.
Preparing to celebrate favorite First DiL’s 40th birthday with a big surprise party this evening.
Tacos on the menu, so my dinner beats your dinner hands down.
Enjoy your weekend, amigos!
Any dinner that someone else makes besides me, beats my dinner hands down.
I’m with you … I’ve tasted my own cooking, and lived to tell about it.

Wait…Buddle of Confusion? That reminds me of a song! (Title a wee bit off, but it works for me!)😎

I have yet to hear a coherent reason why the Navy inflicted Aquaflage on sailors.

Where is the Navy guy?
Right here, BigJohn.
Oh, you mean in the pic- he’s standing behind the goof in the blueberry outfit.
“blueberry outfit”
I was traveling through the blueberry barrens in the Machais area the other day. All the buildings and equipment are painted blueberry including the migrant workers housing. Be hilarious if all the workers wore the above fatigues.
I heard the Marines are going to a neon pink camo pattern with Hello Kitty! as part of the pattern.
They don’t want to be left behind in the confusion.
Dave Hardin, will the “Like” button be back or did it die after the test run. Being “Old School”, and enjoying complimenting others, I liked it because there are so many comments that are deserving of a compliment. Whichever way it goes is fine, but I liked the idea.
Agreed!!
I think there was a post a day or two ago asking feedback on the ‘Like’ button.
Our sympathies for your loss CW. As we have all had it re-emphasized recently, none of know when our time is up. If you haven’t been taking care, you need to do so. We have gotten used to enjoying the trivia posts and look forward to more. Deo Vindice
On behalf of my trivia team, thank you. I am trying to do better at taking care of myself; as my sister often says, if I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.
Been meaning to ask the team – I wrote up something about a lawsuit in Texas where some University of Texas Liberal Arts
snowflakesprofessors are suing because those with an LTC are allowed to carry concealed in their classrooms.I examined the reports TxDPS publishes (from 1996-2017) on convictions in Texas for different crimes – and report on the results.
I thought the TAH community might find it interesting and/or useful. To whom do I send it now? I think Ex-PH2 has/had my email address, if that is any use.
I see since Dave made his anti-semitic “Jew Lawyer” comment and down voted to hades, we’ve lost the ability to down or up vote.
Cowardice
Yeah, that makes real good sense. Leave the comment up and remove the thumbs up/down for the entire blog. None too bright are you?
CAPT0302? Implying Marine Corps Captain 0302 infantry officer?
Yeah, all of the real Marine Corps Captain 0302 infantry officers that I have known over the years have always abbreviated their rank as ‘CAPT’.
Totally legit.
LOL, apparently if I dont include the “ish” part to Jew he wont be Friendish.
If being a Jew bothers him so much maybe he can become Mormonish, they get magic underware.
He will most probably just stay Dickish
I thought the same thing Mick. All of the officer’s I’ve know over the years also called SNCO’s pussies.
How about Cappy. Does that work?
Giggle snort & tee hee.
Maybe on gas mask Thursday. If everyone is wearing pt gear that is.
Yup; I remember Marine officers calling Marine SNCOs pussies as being a common occurrence in the squadrons/infantry battalion that I served in throughout my career. Happened all the time.
I always found that being a raving asshole towards my fellow Marines went a long way towards maintaining unit cohesion, trust, and loyalty. It’s a style of leadership that I’ve long admired.
Reminds me of one of my favorite sarcastic fitrep comments, “Marines follow SNO out of idle curiosity.”
John Giduck – the turd with a face!
Cori LeCinda Pierce – the turd who defrauds with a dog!
“They will eventually get it out of their systems, says Ms. Pierce.
She doesn’t know us very well.
man i can’t even get 1st on saturday for fridays open thread….
Speaking of flying under bridges, I can neither confirm nor deny that I may or may not know certain Marine Corps Aviators who may or may not have flown under a certain prominent bridge several times way back in days of yore when they were young, stupid, and foolishly considered themselves to be invincible.
That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it.
The Tom Johnson spans the Patuxent River- seems there’s a NAS dedicated to Flight Test nearby. 140 feet at its apex. I too can also neither confirm nor deny shenanigans involving said bridge and a VX-1 SH-60B helo. Or two.

That was some fancy flying and aircraft thieving out west last night. He had an F-15 for a shadow and everything.
Quite a spectacular grand finale, too.
And the tinfoil-hatted conspiracy theorists begin claiming that the two F-15Cs that were sent out to intercept the stolen aircraft shot it down in flames in 3…2…1…
I’m confused about the supposed shooting in Canada. Obviously fake news because there could not be a shooting there since they have draconian gun laws. I haven’t seen the “shooter” identified after all these days. His name must be “Smith” or something like that?
A little old CPO shuffled slowly into the Love Boat ice cream parlor inFort Myers,
And pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool.
After catching his breath he ordered a banana split.
The waitress asked kindly, ‘Crushed nuts?’
‘No,’ he replied, ‘Arthritis’
(rim shot)
Thank you; thank you folks. Now THAT’S entertainment.
He’ll be here all week, to include two shows on Friday evening at 1900 and 2100 in the lounge at the Holiday Inn down by the interstate. Ladies will get 2-for-1 well drinks, and remember to try the veal and to tip your wait staff.
-vigorously clapping-
Bravo!
Frankie: Good news re your hearing aids. I also go to the Pensacola VA, as does The Russian, Mrs. HMC Retired. We both HAD the same doctor but she is leaving this month, after being there less than two years. I’ve also been pleased overall with the care. I’ve been sent out to civilian specialty providers under the Veteran’s Choice Program an awful lot the past few years, even for dental care.
If you have tinnitus, there is a good chance you will receive an almost automatic 10% for hearing loss. This is particularly true of you served in high noise NEC/MOS.
I don’t have tinnitus, just natural degenerative hearing loss, with my advanced age. I don’t see it as service connected. I was issued ear plugs when I became a Single Rotor Turbine Engine Helicopter Crewchief, (MOS 627.27), which I kept packaged, in the top tray of the tool box. Unlike a Non-CPO, no longer breathing stunt pilot, one time Navy PH-2 I wasn’t ordered onto the deck of a Flat Top with out ear plugs, inducing tinnitus. I don’t think that the Army owes me for this.
Disgusting, confusing, or something true story. Had to stop by one of those “beauty supply” stores last week for something that was only available there. Had not been in the place for a couple of years so was not prepared to be shocked and dismayed with the experience.
Pretty much found what I needed but did have a question. Turned around and a fat (presumably) gay guy with purple hair smiled and asked if he could help me. He actually could and did. A very pleasant interaction. So far, so good. Then I noticed a coven of gay guys in the middle of the store. Easy enough to avoid them. One of them even noticed me looking around and kindly directed me toward the rest room.
When I remembered something else is when it got REALLY weird. Back generally where I started in the store I was approached by an obvious cross dresser. Big guy. Really big guy. Not fat at all, which was kinda scary. This guy could probably take me out before I could get turned around to run!
And he didn’t seem to like me very much. Wearing 40 pounds of makeup on a frame which should have been playing professional basketball he was an imposing figure even in a dress.
Oh, well. Some things are just better not seen in daylight.
Enjoyed reading this, OWB.
Thank you for sharing.
Thx!
There’s always the Avon lady, isn’t there? Do they still exist?
If I can’t find what I want at Walgreen’s or Walmart, I go to Sally’s. So far, no peculiar confused people have shown up. Maybe it’s just the metro area, and they’re all in the Loop. But what do I know?
You’re right: some things are better left unseen – ever.
Enjoyed this, glad it wasn’t me.
I recommend drinking off this sitcheeation
