The folks at Military Phonies send us their tireless work on this fellow, Andre “Andy” Prado, a Cuba-born American who enlisted in the US Army and who currently serves as the Post Commander of the Disabled Veterans of America Post 5 in Los Angeles, California. He tells the tale of his military service to the Library of Congress’ Veterans’ Project as a 20-year veteran Ranger and a sergeant major;
He also tells his story to former classmates on Classmates.com;
He claims that he joined the Army in 1978, that he participated in the Grenada Invasion with the 75th Rangers, that he was in Operation just Cause in Panama, Desert Storm in Kuwait, and Somalia in Mogadishu, Somalia. he was in a coma for more than a year from his injuries, that he went from 200 pounds to 57 pounds. He claims that he has Silver Star Medals, Bronze Star medals, Purple Heart Medals, and a 3rd award of the Combat Infantryman Badge.
The truth is that he enlisted in the California National Guard a few days before the Grenada liberation in 1983 precluding his participation in that battle. His only deployment was to Desert Storm where he was a customs inspector in Saudi Arabia. Probably, he was the customs inspector who accused me of smuggling Iraqi weapons back from the war when he found our M240 coax machine gun stowed beneath the floor boards of my Bradley and he didn’t recognize the Fabrique-Nacional weapon as US Army issued. Maybe not.
Anyway, here’s his FOIA;
He was a buck sergeant, customs inspector, not a Ranger Sergeant Major. No retired sergeant major would dress up like a street hood. The amount of money that he invested in all of his Ranger and Special Forces BS is all on display at Phony Warriors. The guy is such a douche – and of course, he has a “service dog”;

Bullet holes leave scars that tend to be pretty obvious, least they used to unless the surgery has become so sophisticated they can hide missing pieces of skin when you are sewn back together.

I have always been suspicious of the Veterans History Project.
I think it is a great tool to record stories from our past and present to be heard by future generations.
However, they have no concrete way to qualitatively screen the stories. And if I am not mistaken, they will also take stories from spouses and kids – the ones generally getting lied to on a daily basis.
For every 9 or 10 legit stories there has to be a few phonies or embellishers.
Tough call.

Have to agree with you 100% GT. Apparently there are many organizations looking for members who have a good b. S. story; no proof needed. Look at the Vietnam Veterans Association. To be a member, all you had to have done was BE IN the service DURING the RVN war. A lot of these recognition seeking whores ride the floats in parades, as well as load their vehicles down with stickers such as this Prado phony has done. You can spot ’em and smell ’em a mile away. Those of us who have paid the price do not seek recognition, and generally avoid the topic. It’s just difficult to avoid commenting once a phony has made himself visible and looking for the limelight. Contempt is about the only word that really enters my mind at times like that. As I get older I try to mellow a bit more. But the truth is, it just pisses me off more and more when I see these idiots and hear their make-believe war stories. For every 9 or 19 story tellers, my guess would be probably 25% or more are named Mr. Fullashit.

I was wondering the same thing. He seemed so eager to get this all straightened out as soon as he could just a few days ago! You’d think that he would at least let us know the names of some of the other soldiers that he served with, or what SF group he was with, or his Ranger class number. You know, stuff that he could pull off the top of his bullet pierced head to have some credibility. Hell, I’d be willing to start with the name of the hospital where he was treated and his physical therapist, or at least a copy of his VA disability card.

UPDATE: After Prado offered to provide his DD-214 and DD-215 he now posted that his VA psychiatrist, a Dr. Grider (who checks out as legit), told him to ignore the poster accusing him of Stolen Valor.
Prado plans to due for defamation of character.
He went on to say that his psychiatrist told Prado that the Stolen Valor poster never spent a day in Prado’s boots so they don’t know him and what he’s accomplished, so for Prado not to worry about it. He (psychiatrist) said that with a-holes like that they probably never finished military basic training and were probably not accepted to the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard.
