About two-and-a-half years in the Corps, and it looks like it was cut short for some reason, but he got out as a Lance Corporal so whatever he did couldn’t have been too bad. But, I don’t know where he’s telling people he got wounded five times or has 156 confirmed kills between Sept. 1993 and March 1996. But there are no special assignments or special training;

He’s the first USMC sniper I’ve ever seen who didn’t qualify for an expert rifle badge.
And not even that. I forget the scoring, I think 250 was max, and 220 was expert? If its something like that, I routinely scored expert by the skin of my teeth, at around 225-235. The guys in my unit that went to sniper school were all 245+
The scoring has changed a few times over the years. When I came in, it was out of 60 points, then it changed 250, and currently it is out of 350, with 305 the lowest you can shoot for expert.

I’ve been out for 7 years and I still carry mine. one is a Legion Life Member and the other is my unit coin and I’m the one that designed that myself.
The only challenge coin I carried was a 1970 1 pfennig piece. That was our drink challenge coin back then. I still have that coin.
Since I am a Mormon teetotaler, I have no need of challenge coins, and until a couple of years ago, didn’t even know what they were.
But, I do have some commemorative coins or medallions from a past Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a United States Army birthday party, a patriotic motorcycle group,
some NASA missions, and a Soviet Union medallion from when I went on R&R to visit Expo ’70 in Osaka, Japan.
I might have another one or two in my footlocker, but I can’t remember.
Since challenge coins can be purchased by anyone, why would anyone regard it as proof of military service?

Correct. I believe it was early 2006 when I called on the MARSOC Command Surgeon’s office at Camp Lejeune and spoke with the o-6 Navy surgeon and his HMCM. They were a brand new entity just trying to get their offices up and running in one of the old red brick admin buildings.

Through “PROJECT TRANSITION” in Korea, I got on the job training as a Military Police Patrolman (MOS 95B20), and at Fort Hood, Texas, I transferred into the Cavalry, where I completed on the job training as a Cavalry Scout (MOS 11D20).
When I was at Dong Ha, I wore that embarrassing “Leaning Latrine” unit shoulder patch of the First Logistical Command.
My first assignment in the old Republic of Viet Nam was the Phu Lam Signal Battalion, First Signal Brigade, right in Saigon.
Back in those days, I hated being in the rear with the gear, and wanted more than anything to be a genuine combat soldier.
But, I wasn’t as smart as other guys, who knew better, and WISHED they could have been in the rear with the gear.

It could be an admin mess up, however I had a online discussion about a year ago with a young Marine who was wounded and medically discharged in under three years. Apparently the 3 year criteria can be waived under certain circumstances if the Marine has a clean record and gets out early under honorable conditions. He sent me a link to support that but I’m too lazy to dig for it.

Ok my name is Todd c Davis. I have served in both the USMC and the Army. I started out in ADA as a 14s then a 14t. Deployed for OIF 1 with my ADA unit to a strategic point west of Iraq because of my prior service age. I was. 37 at the time I got tasked out to drive truck in support of 5th SFG into Iraq admit I saw some bad shit there still dealing with it as a disabled vet now. Anyway my point is. I got a GWOTE and ICM. No valor awards just a hat ring and a plaque sent later on which I wear and cherish they gave me those tokens as a way of saying well done. Why this idiot has to embellish I’ll never know I went and did my job to my utmost and that is enough for me. Plus being able to work alongside real professionals. I then spent 2 and 1/2 years out west….then got off active duty and came home and then re-enlisted and spent 19 YEARS MORE in….so guess how pissed we can be as senior NCOs when some shitbag with 25 or 26 months claims Superman status when some of us had that many YEARS in the military.

I have known this guy for sometime now, and I have also known that approximately 90% of everything that comes out of his mouth are lies. I called his b.s. a long time ago. When I first got to Camp Atterbury they wanted to make me the Master Resiliency NCO. I said “I just came from being an Infantry Platoon Sergeant in Iraq and you want to make me the huggy Feely NCO? I can give you my former PL’s phone number and he could tell you why that would be a bad idea” I didn’t get the job.

I did contact Paul privately. I told him we knew what he was doing and I gave him a chance to correct it quietly. He chose instead to lie to me and try to cover his tracks. That’s not the actions of an honorable person.
And how dare you say that our service bears no weight in the civilian world. What we did while in uniform protected your right to spew the silliness that you have here. Many of us bear the scars from that service and will for the rest of our lives. Many of us lost the ability to use various parts of our bodies and even lost body parts. And Paul would spit on that with his lies and fraud. We have every right to call him and those like him on those lies and fraud. So yes, we are the judge and jury of those who would seek to steal the valor and tarnish the honor of those who’ve served honorably, many who aren’t here anymore to defend that honor themselves. The US Supreme Court told us we have that right.
The fact that you came here in a pathetic attempt to admonish us and defend a liar shows that what was said earlier is true. You, Paul, and those like the both of you are what’s wrong with this country. he should be ashamed for what he’s done and you should be ashamed for defending him. I don’t think any of you guys have brought it up, so I will. Beyond lies and deceit, Paul Latare stole something he neither owned or paid for. He’s a thief. If “Concerned” came home to find that some petty criminal had broken into her house and stole her valuables that she had worked her ass off to acquire, what would be her reaction? Would she “reach out” and try to get the thief professional help? Would she be concerned for his feelings and his self esteem? While that is possible, I think it is unlikely. More likely is that “Concerned” would be mad as hell, want her stuff back, and want to punish the asshole that stole it. She would probably also want to ensure that the thief never stole from anyone ever again. She might put the word out, warn her neighbors, distribute flyers in her neighborhood….hell she might even create a website.
Many of you guys and gals that post here are veterans (I’m not) and you are deservedly proud of the skill set and achievements that you earned in the military. Many of you paid for your achievements in blood. And many of you saw too many good men and/or women, who were just as proud of their military skills and accomplishments, come home maimed and injured… or in body bags, having given their last full measure of devotion.
Although Paul Latare did serve, he stole valor, and he stole it from his fellow veterans both living and dead. The dead cannot decry their stolen property as they have no voice. The living, however, damn well can, and in my opinion, they should…with enthusiasm and rancor.
So “Concerned”, please explain once again to these men and women how you think it is somehow their duty to reform the thief that stole from them, and stole from their dead brothers. They might get it this time.
Not only is he a thief of valor, he was also found guilty of felony theft in 1998.

I just don’t understand it. What ever happened to shame? It’s a powerful tool to get someone back on the straight and narrow. Now people are afraid to shame someone. It might hurt the persons fragile ego. Everyone’s a victim with a sad tale, an excuse for their wrong doing. And people let it pass feeling sorry for the poor baby. Nothing is ever anyone’s fault. Way back in the days of old, when I was just a little controller, I would rather have gotten a good thrashing with a belt than have my parents shame me. But the shaming worked. I learned valuable lessons about right and wrong. Now everyone wants to be coddled and far too many people are willing to do just that. Look at the comments to Latare’s apology. Far too many of the commenters say his lies and fraud don’t matter, that he’s still a good person. WTF!!! No, he isn’t! he’s a pathological liar and a fraud. he pissed on the his own honor and the honor of those who served, both living and dead. he used his lies to get free things. That’s theft!! But to those people it’s alright. None of them have tripped to the fact that he didn’t apologize until he was caught. He would have continued with his lies and thievery. Support him and help him to become a better person, yes. But don’t coddle him and downplay the seriousness of what he did. He isn’t strong and courageous for admitting his lies. He was forced into admitting them. There’s no strength or courage in that.
I just read all of the comments under his apology. He hangs with a pretty forgiving crowd. They are all so proud of him for “coming clean”, but they do not seem to realize the reason that he finally ‘fessed up. Maybe they should all chip in and take him down to the local ice cream parlor to celebrate his integrity. And as for that person that keeps posting on this thread that this issue should have been handled between private messaging with him, he made his false claims publicly, then it should be cleaned up publicly.
