American Guns cancelled
Will sends us a link an article at Fox News that reports the Discovery Channel show, American Guns, has been cancelled as a result of a bunch of Facebook comments;
“I know you all have to make money but would Discovery Channel PLEASE consider ceasing to broadcast the show in the U.K.? Sadly your program makes buying/owning guns seem fun, glamorous, even normal,” wrote one. Another tweeted, “Dear Discovery Channel: it’s not appropriate showing the program American Guns now!” Another weighed in: “With Discovery shows like ‘Sons of Guns’, ‘American Guns’, ‘Ted Nugent’s Gun Country’ etc it’s not surprising how guns r seen as acceptable.”
It’s terrible that gun owners were portrayed as “normal”, isn’t it? The Facebook comments have been dumped down the Memory Hole, but there are scads of recent comments from people who support the show.
I DVR’d the show to watch on weekends because they did work on some pretty unique projects. Some of the clips are still available on the website but the episodes have been removed.
The representative of Discovery with whom Fox talked wouldn’t link the show’s cancellation to the shooting last week, but Fox notes that the popularity of the show was on an upswing;
The show had a 50 percent ratings increase for its second season premiere, and one of its stars, Renee Wyatt, recently said she would “definitely” be interested in returning for season three.
So, you know, read what you want into that.

I guess 80 million gun owning Americans are not normal.

But hey, Elmer needs extended mags for weekends innawoods.
Personally I did not care for the show, but for Discovery to yank it over his is just pathetic. I dumfounded by the blame the gun crowd… tragic, heartbreaking, but it was the idiot who did the killings fault.
The listing of the victims of the Sandy Hook murders probably means something to Anonymous but I’ll be darned if I can figure it out. Is it a demonstration of his or her ability to cut and paste?
I don’t understand the reference to Elmer. I thought the shooter’s name was Adam and that he obtained his guns from his mother Nancy’s collection. Oh well. I guess whatever Anonymous’s point was, if any, he or she doesn’t care to share. That’s okay. We’re easy to get along with here.
2-17 Air Cav: it tells me he’s a reprehensible ghoul who is more interested in not letting a tragedy go to waste than anything else. But what else would you expect from someone in the suburbs west of Philly?
The “Elmer” reference also tells me Anonymous (2) has a problem distinguishing reality from fantasy, since I’m pretty sure that was a reference to “Elmer Fudd” – who doesn’t really exist. But Anonymous apparently thinks Elmer is real.
Hey, Anonymous? Here’s a clue for ya. If the film starts out with the “Warner Brothers” logo and looks like a cartoon – it’s not real.
Hey Anon, remember when every DHS program designed to save lives was screamed about by the left because a few dead Americans was worth it to remain free?
I think the 50% upswing was the chick in the picture became of Legal Age and most men didn’t feel icky oogling her. I think they work on interesting guns but the $$$$$ is just a rip off. And if the UK thinks it makes gun owners look normal some gun owners think it makes us look like slack jawed hicks.
Just my 2 cents.
Beat me to it 2-17, cutting and pasting is quite a difficult task.
I like the show for the custom made hardware they build.
O.K. I did not really watch that show but I do watch “Top Shot” Could someone cancel Honey Boo-Boo while they are in the cancelling mood?
I’m still getting over the shock of discovering Storage Wars is staged. Now this?
Yep, gonna be watching a lot more of American Pickers.
2-17 Air Cav – The Elmer Fudd reference mostly comes from /k/.
It refers to rednecks and mall ninjas who show up at shooting ranges with tacticool bling and end up with orbital fractures.
Gunsmoke reruns are next, I guess. Much too violent. Someone got shot in every show! Talk about pandering to violence and encouraging impressionable people to stand up to evil! We just can’t have that.
@12. And here I thought you were referring to Elmer Gantry! Sonofagun! So, it’s rednecks who are your targets? They are the evildoers? Is that it?
The Discovery Channel has lately been on the near lunatic left. The really amazing thing is that they put American Guns on in the first place. Between Global warming and The Maya Apocalypse, Discovery, History, et-al have really degenerated in the past few years. I rarely watch them any more. I did see another Maya doomsday show this weekend about some guy who said that he had found a huge statue of some Mayan King on a deserted island 400 miles into the Pacific off Valparaiso Chile. He made all kinds of off the wall statements as to the statue relating to the apocalypse. Turns out his deserted island has an airport, a resort and a small town on it. Total bullshit. Look up Robinson Caruso Island.
@15
Maybe it backfired. Maybe they intended to make gun-owners look like backwoods hicks and people watched because they liked the show.
And I like those doomsday apocalypse type shows. They’re almost as amusing as the “Masons are out to get you” type shows.
@11. I liked American Pickers–until the skinny guy came out of the closet. Turns out thaose two are really enjoying their little road trips. And, yes, I am a homophobe. But I will admit to watching Liberace many years ago.

Guess my pc thought it was worth saying twice!
@17
Skinny guy is gay? Huh. I thought the tatted up chick that worked the shop was his girl.
@20. No, sorry to be the one to tell you. Go ahead and Google. Three dollar bill. Both of the guys. That’s why pudgy’s mom won’t deal with him. That isn’t mayo on his lip.
@14 – I’m just telling you how the nomenclature got started.
The accuracy of the stereotype is up to you.
BTW, /k/ is far from a liberal stronghold.
I think, since I have no TV any more, I’ll stick to what I can catch on live streaming and DVDs. And read books.
Lots of violent episodes in books. Like that part where Wormface is interrogating Kip.
@2-17
Huh. Well, I never particularly liked that show.
I did as you suggested. Found a relatively recent article that says neither of them are.
“In fact, both men are straight; for the last 17 years, Mr. Wolfe has dated Ms. Faeth, an accountant with a laid-back manner that complements what Ms. Colby described as her boss’s “firecracker” personality. ”
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/25/garden/mike-wolfe-of-american-pickers-at-home-in-iowa.html?pagewanted=all
Maybe you can go back to watching the show?
@6. Oh yeah, and Hondo? Congrats for using Whois to find an unresolvable Comcast ISP range.
Go ahead. Try finding my house.
I’ll shove your Bushmaster so far up your ass your mom will feel it.
@25 Can someone tell me why the most anti-gun people are the most violent? It kind of makes me thankful they don’t want to own guns– mental stability and all.
Teh stoopid is strong in this one. Anon, can you please form a coherent thought for me? Trying to decrypt your shameless exploitation of the victims into a logical point is giving me a headache.
@24. I see the problem! Your NYT article is from Aug 2011 when they were still holed up in the hallway closet. Try this link for an update:

@26. I have had the same thought and observation! As I like to point out, they have unilaterally disarmed themselves. And for that I am truly grateful.
@28
Ohhh…gotcha.
Had it not been s firearm it could have been pipe bombs, blades, sharp pointed sticks or blunt clubs. He had an intent on destroying life. If he had used knives would you be cutting your steak with a spoon tonight? My point being Sick people will do sick things we need to identify the sick people before they have a chance to cause harm to themselves or others,
The worst US school massacre ever? 1930’s, a bombing. Look it up.
Now, let’s see, what would have stopped this dirtbag? Hmmm, maybe, call me crazy, but maybe if a teacher had a gun, or 10 teachers had guns, he would have been stopped. But, they can’t have guns. They are citizens (spelled v-i-c-t-i-m-s) of Connecticut. So, their sole defense against a gun-wielding, or knife-wielding, or baseball bat-wielding, or flamethrower wielding whacko is to lock the door and die. Brilliant plan!
“American Guns” cancelled? That’s a shame. The mom on that show is kinda hot.
Hey Anon, I could do that too with alcohol but trying to list the 2000 a month that die from it would take up too much space. Or I could do it with the names of “green on blue” attacks in the ‘Stan since the current POTUS announced his withdrawal plan, but that would take up too much space too.
Why not just debate the topic at hand without resorting to emotional response. Use logic and reason.
but the news media still kind of tip toes around the mental illness problem…like maybe it will go away. I think I’ll just cancel cable totally.
So, what is this going to be the Scarlett letter on all things firearms now? The show wasn’t great but it wasn’t that bad either. Heaven forbid Americans use their rights not be demonized. Could anyone imagine if cop shows were canceled for having the 4th amendment in it or The View cancelled because Whoopi goes batshit crazy every day invoking her 1st amendment rights.
This country is overran with hysterical children.
Evil exists and it always will, Libtards. Wishing away guns and anything related to them won’t change the human condition.
What’s being cancelled on TV next?
Disarmed “citizens” (either by self-choice or Teh State) = serf/slave.
And “gun free zones” — aren’t.
Connecticut already had a gun ban in place, worked well.
Someone said that if the NRA took steps to do something that the media would not be able to vilify them. Those calling the NRA despicable don’t get it. And A protest against them is ridiculous.
In all seriousness, if there’s something on TV I don’t care to watch, I just don’t watch it. Maybe our neighbors overseas (and citizens here) can opt for that as well?
Frankly, the gun shows aren’t so bad, and I’ve have been curious on one or two episodes, wondering how much they ask for restoration or upgrades of firearms – but since I’m not in that market, I could really care less if they cancel the show or not. If nothing else, the shows tried to show proper gun use and safety, so that maybe folks would have an appreciation for them – but a TV show doesn’t replace responsible care/handing of a firearm, and certainly doesn’t replace firearms training courses on the range.
PS…Just like the gov’t agencies and Jamie Gorelick’s wall…the social workers, psychologists while trained to do many things, have no recourse when recognizing that someone may be of harm to themselves or others. They get shoved into a system of inadequate care. The psychiatrist cannot admit a patient if there is no psych ward, and no insurance will pay for mental health healing. It’s a crapshoot. Then you have parents who are in denial that more love and patience will be enough. And some live in fear of the truth and the stigma that someone must be institutionalized. The sooner we stop being a politically correct Country, the better off we’ll all be.
@39. That’s why the anti-gun nuts want to take the guns. They know the laws probibiting and prescribing punishment for certain actions don’t stop those actions. Every criminal statute is broken. Burglary and robbery are crimes and they are committed thousands of times a week. Thus, the game plan is to portray guns as inherently bad and gun owners as stupid (the latter is a terribly strong theme in the Cole visitors’ comments.) Ultimately, the guns must be taken. That’s the absolute goal.
It was a damn good show and will be missed. Not as violent than any cop/CSI show. For the love of God, if you want to cancel something, cancel that dam honey boo-boo crap.
@39 it worked really well, it effectively disarmed the law abiding citizens, guaranteeing the criminal would encounter no opposition to his plan…..
@42 indeed I believe you are correct, you would think a mom who had given instructions to babysitters when her kid was 10 to “never leave him alone, and never turn your back on him” would realize that perhaps weapons training was not what was needed in this instance….
Dear Anonymous,
I did not watch “American Guns” for the guns.
I watched it for the “cans” … if you know what I mean … those will be missed.
You see, I am very comfortable with my guns. The guns that I will keep, maintain, shoot, and use to protect my life, that of my family, and that of anyone who is in danger of serious bodily harm and or death.
Oh .. the fat dude in the basement … I’ll miss him too.
Have a nice day!
This show was awful. Just plain awful. Boring as hell, poorly scripted, and plain old yawn inducing. And I love guns. Glad it’s being cancelled. I don’t think many people will miss it. Except for all you pedophiles that thought the trampy daughter was hot. Skank city. Good riddance AmGuns. Let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.
I never watched that show. I like shows where the crew does things like recreate a ballista and make it work properly, or a siege tower, or even reconstructing a trireme.
That doesn’t waste my time on superfluous silliness.
I guess they should cancel CSI, bones, and any other show that has characters carrying and using guns
The history channel, wwii in color. Cancel them all.
