Jealous much, Nicole Frazier?
Robert sends us a link to the Rocky Mountain Collegian and a piece written by Nicole Frazier who says she’s an English and Spanish major, but apparently, she doesn’t like that 10% discount that you guys get at Lowes and Home Depot;
First off, I believe when businesses, such as Banana Republic, Lowe’s, Apple and Disney World handout military discounts, they are doing two things. They are establishing an uncouth definition of what it means to serve this country and encouraging a hierarchy that discredits the work of other heroes in our country, treating military personnel better based on their willingness to volunteer.
It isn’t that I am
appreciativeunappreciative (correction) of the risks they have taken. It’s that I recognize that the military is not the only group of people serving this nation.
You’re right, Nichole, we’re not the only people who are serving this country, but if you were old enough to remember the post-Vietnam War era and if you could have seen how veterans of that war were treated like second class citizens, maybe you’d see how this discount thing makes up for that to some small measure. Veterans were ashamed to admit that they served because of mouthy little punks like you who demeaned them for their service to this country.
I am advocating for reconstructing our definition of what it means to serve this country. I am thinking of the word ‘serve’ in the sense of yielding a service or product for others, not limiting it to just those who have enlisted in the military.
I figure that if we were to think of it in those terms, we would discover that millions of people are serving their country; millions of Americans who are equally deserving of discounts as any soldier.
How do you “reconstruct a definition”? A definition is what it is. There are indeed millions of people who serve the country and it’s citizens, but, how many of those you want to extend a discount, yank up their roots every two years like I did and move to some other part of the world, sometimes leaving their families behind and then spend a year or so getting shot at? Are you going to do that, Nichole. Of course you won’t.
Personally, I believe that a collaboration of education, patience and an open mind is key to improving a lot of the world’s problems. I think by glorifying the military profession with discounts is reiterating the long-held notion in this country that a strong military presence is the way to go about encouraging change. To put it more simply, encouraging a forceful approach over what I believe to be a stronger and powerful, and perhaps more peaceful one.
Go take that “collaboration of education, patience and an open mind” to Pakistan and start improving the lot of that part of the world, well, until they chop your head off or shoot you in the face. You’re known as a student, that’s because you’re still learning, that you don’t know everything yet. Even when you’re not a student any longer, you still won’t know how the world works until you’ve accomplished something. Most of our members of the military who are your age have already accomplished something. You’re far behind them, Nichole.
By the way, your local merchants who give a student discount on their wares and services should really be questioning their practices when you haven’t done anything to deserve that which you would deny members of the military, given your conditions for deserving a discount.
Category: Dumbass Bullshit
She’s just mad that they don’t give Pole Dancers a 10% discount because those $1 apparently aren’t flying fast enough for her.
I wonder if she has read “Starship Troopers”, because if it were up to me, veterans would be entitled to A LOT more.
Well, it’s all about Kumbaya for the starry-eyed peaceniks. Clearly she needs to get a clue, and sadly she will not. Because reality has not set in, and may never.
But wait, there’s hope. Meet Lauren Stieritz, a fellow student and writer for the Rocky Mountain Collegian. She has a far more grounded view on our elitist military discounts.

Glorifying the military with discounts?? Huh? It’s not like confetti and balloons fall from the fucking ceiling every time I buy something at Lowes, no sign that lights up and says “Veteran!!!”
Speaking of Lowes, I was in my local one wearing an Army T-shirt and hat. The cashier asked if I was in the military. I said I had been 20 years ago but no longer. She still gave me a discount! Thanks Lowes!
She’s an English major? Oh, don’t get me started.
Handout is a noun. Hand out is a two-word verb. You hand out handouts to people with your hand out.
You don’t ‘yield’ a product to people.
‘millions of Americans who are equally deserving of discounts as any soldier.’ is a sentence fragment, not a sentence. When two sentences are separated by a semi-colon, both of them require active or passive verbs, not just one. No sense of correct punctuation. And when doing comparisons, do not use ‘equally’ and ‘as’. Use ‘as’ twice, as in ‘just as deserving as any soldier.’
And another functional illiterate applies for a job. Maybe if we’re lucky, she’ll stay in the copy room and complain about being underemployed.
I know the 10% discount is why I joined and kept re-enlisting. sarc/
great response to this spoiled brat’s tantrum: http://www.collegian.com/2012/10/03/response-to-nicole-fraziers-why-we-shouldnt-just-have-military-discounts-2/
I especially liked the ending: Ask any of our military members if they really, truly care about that super awesome ten percent discount they receive at Applebee’s, or Lowe’s or whatever. Sure, they made a choice to join the military. But if those brave men and women didn’t make that choice, who would? Would you step up and give your life to protect us?
I can one hundred percent guarantee you they sure as hell didn’t sign their name over for you — and for the sake of our country — for a discount on a trip to Disney World
Doh!. Stu beat me to it.
Looks like many of you beat me to it as well, but the response is quite well done.
This statement at the end of the article in Nicole’s bio pretty much sums it up.
“I am very liberal in my views of the world”
Jester, I think Heinlein was a frigging genius with that concept. And people like her reinforce the idea even more.
The rebuttal was very well done!
Here’s an idea, Nicole: How’s about you open yourself a little restaurant, or bookstore, or what kind of business you think you could handle and make your own decision about who you charge what for your service. Why, you could even decide that cops, firefighters, and veterans get an upcharge of 15% just because they are so undeserving of your respect.
Nicole is an oxygen thief. You can just see the contempt dripping from that ill-conceived tripe of an opinion column. She lives within her little bubble of like-minded progressives and probably had a giggle or two over a skinny latte at Starbuck’s over this. Whatever.
Maybe Nicole should ponder the discounts available to her and her fellow college students. And, heck, they don’t even have to incur a paper cut or staple wound to avail themselves of these:
Amazon: The Amazon Student program is free to join and includes six months of free two-day shipping as well as email alerts.
MLB: The Tigers have a dozen College Nights at Comerica to choose from this year. The promotion includes a pavilion ticket and a player T-shirt for $19.

Verizon: Depending on what school you attend, you may be eligible for a discount of 18% off your monthly bill from Verizon.
General Motors: GM is offering college students and recent grads preferred pricing on most of their vehicles.
Apple: Apple offers a new back-to-school discount each year. This year they’re including a $100 Apple gift card with the purchase of a qualifying Mac. The card can be used at the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore.
Microsoft: Microsoft is throwing in a free 4GB Xbox 360 with the purchase of a PC priced at $699 or more.

I guess these and the other 80 or so major student discounts listed on the site do not compare to the 10% military discount for a $3.00 bag of concrete at Lowes or a $19.99 tee shirt at banana Republic.
Seems like she stepped on a hornet’s nest based on the responses on her page. Dumb4ss kid with no actual idea of how the world works attempting to lecture the folks that actually do understand the world…nice to see members of her community attempting to educate her on the reality of life.
Being liberal doesn’t mean you have to be stupid Nicole, do 8 minutes of research before writing your next piece and maybe more people will be interested in your opinion.
@17
You’re right, VOV. You don’t have to be stupid to be liberal, but it helps.
Aw shit, man. She just went full retard.
Perhaps when she graduates with her English/Spanish double major and finds herself without any job prospects, she can go on some of the many government handout programs. Isn’t that sorta like getting a discount on everything?
Been a while since we had an over-pampered/under-clued college student profiled here…and the last one decided to show up and lecture us on how “hard” her life was at Haaaah-vahd and how we were all a bunch of mindless drones. Wonder if she graduated yet, let alone got a job?
“Being liberal doesn’t mean you have to be stupid Nicole….” I beg to differ. Being stupid doesn’t mean you have to be liberal but being liberal necesssarily means you are stupid. Of course, stupid is the operative word and using my “uncouth definition” of it applies.
Yeah, Bill, I majored in modern languages (French, Spanish, & German). Couldn’t find a job. Joined the Navy. Never looked back.
I believe getting your body blown up, going deaf, dealing with a lifetime of consequences due to ones willingness to serve and you know keep me free is deserving of a little discount here and there.
Where is Rob Riggle to scream, “I hate HIPPIES!!!!!”
“establishing an uncouth definition” – I’m actually quite OK with having a lack of “couth” when it comes to breaking things and killing bad guys.
Hahahahahahha
She’s just jealous. She’ll get over it. Wait until she gets offered a senior discount; by the time she hits that age, she’ll have been around the block enough times to appreciate it when someone saves you money — for ANY reason!
PintoNag, by that point, she will look like Helen Thomas and be ugly as fuck
She’s getting lit up like a Christmas tree in the comments section, but alas, there are still a couple boneheads that are spewing the leftist bull.
When/if she ever graduates, maybe she can get staff position on the Madison County Crier. The only requirment is that female staff members must display armpit hair.
Yeah that 10% discount was so worth my government sponsored vacations in Iraq……. Maybe when she figures out that she cant afford to pay for the cost of her “education” shell end up enlisting for the college loan repayment. Yeah I wont hold my breath and wait for that to happen but its a nice thought.
Nicole nailed it when she said we need a new definition of “service”. A lot of you guys suffer from an obvious superiority complex that you reinforce amongst yourselves, you dismiss and trivialize other peoples hard work and dedication, resort to crude atacks like referring to women as “pole dancers” when they don’t agree with you (nice one Chip [#1] – you and Rush have a lot in common as far as your respect of women), think you have a monopoly on the word service. And, as a columnist recently noted, you are the most easily offended group this side of “The Innoence of Muslims” protesters. Case in point, Jonn even posting this item. Right on Nicole, don’t let these ugly dudes get you down.
Be careful ARoberts, with that degree in English, they make her an officer.
Ex-PH2, I was a geography major (once I figured out that I wasn’t going to make it as a math major) and ROTC. Upon graduation, I got commissioned as a USAF 2lt and went off to pilot training. Best thing I ever did!
Ah, college! That wonderful time when people can think of themselves as adults without actually having to behave like one!
Joe, I for one can say that I dont believe I am better than her just for the sheer fact that I have served. I do believe that I am more learned than she is simply because I have existed in the real world, you know that place where its not all unicorns shitting rainbows.
Joe, this is just going to be the same arguement if we don’t hit it from a different angle. So, let me start. It is the combination of “work-place factors” that make military service unique from other types of service, makes the military profession different from other professions. There is no other type of service that combines the factors that the military does. If you can think of any, please name them.
As in “Community Organizers”? Fuck her and her goat both, you too Joe.
I work for a certain cell phone carrier and we give military members a 15% discount though a contractual agreement with the gov.
The same gov that gives a 25% discount to IRS employees.
Yeah, us vets are riding high on the hog, aren’t we.
fucking idiots.
Really, Joe? When I joined and served, there were no discounts for serving, in fact, just the opposite was more the norm. Plus, we didn’t join and serve for any accolades or promises of discounts, and especially no thoughts of being superior to anyone, etc. So, you, as well as her, don’t have a clue as to why men and women choose to serve. Your father did, but that doesn’t mean you do. Just because certain business interests choose to show their appreciation to those that serve/served doesn’t mean you have to have a case of the ass in jealousy, because you chose not to serve. Dick envy can be a horrible affliction and you suffer from a severe case of it.
Lack of respect for women? What am I? Chopped liver? If these guys didn’t have that, I would certainly not be here.
Joe, don’t you get that Miss Nicole is a stuck-up, snotty little yuppie whose self-importance, like any fungus after rain, knows no bounds? If not, then you REALLY aren’t paying attention. The young woman who wrote a very direct and forthright rebuttal correctly pointed out all the discounts that students get, just for being students.
Miss Nicole is WAY off base, and has a poor grasp on her use of vocabulary. “Uncouth” basically means uncivilized or ill-mannered, so how does one go about making a definition uncivilized or ill-mannered? She’s a twit, with a rather lofty view of her own importance in the worl.
@Lucky, she’s not a hippie, she’s a yuppie. Probably even dresses like one of those tarted-up women on Good Morning America or the NBC evening news. I’d bet she even has Diane (gag me) Sawyer as her idol. Or worse — Baba WaWa.
Joe, You hate the Military and anyone whose opinion isn’t in line with yours, we get it.
If I remember correctly there was a topic on here about Military dicounts and most of us could care less if we recieve them. I could be wrong and confusing TAH with a different milblog that I read.
If you bothered to read all the comments and use some reading comprehension, most people are upset that she is pissing and moaning about the Military getting dicounts while she is enjoying her student discount at the same establishments that she mentioned. I’ll go out on a limb here and say that in my opinion I think even Insipid would agree with us on this.
As far as our treatment of women read Ex PH2’s comment above. Hell I’m shocked that you were unable to read racism into any of our comments.
Joe: Take off the ideological blinders, fella. You’ll see much more clearly and completely if/when you do. Wanting something doesn’t make it either truth or acceptable. Here are some of the current accepted definitions of the term “public service”. Am Heritage Dictionary: public service n. 1. Employment within a governmental system, especially within the civil service. 2. A service performed for the benefit of the public, especially by a nonprofit organization. 3. The business of supplying an essential commodity, such as water or electricity, or a service, such as communications or transportation, to the public. Collins English Dictionary: public service n 1. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) a. government employment b. the management and administration of the affairs of a political unit, esp the civil service 2. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) a. a service provided for the community buses provide a public service b. (as modifier) a public-service announcement 3. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) the Austral. and NZ name for the civil service Most others are fairly similar to one or both of these. Simply put, public service is work (service) performed primarily to provide a benefit to the general public vice in expectation of making a profit for a given business or corporation. Indeed, much public service is performed by volunteer labor. And even using the expanded definition from the first case above, it’s clear that most commercial ventures don’t generally qualify. What this ditz is doing is throwing a temper-tantrum because (1) the world isn’t to her liking, and (2) she has no clue about how this country – or the world- really works. She shouldn’t be expected to have a clue, actually; she’s not experienced enough yet. From all appearances, all she’s done so far in life is go to school(s) paid for by either tax revenues or mommie and daddy. Her major (English/Spanish) is further proof that she hasn’t a clue about the real world. As Ex-PH2 noted above, the job market for modern languages majors isn’t exactly robust – and hasn’t been for decades. For her sake, I hope her family either has money or owns… Read more »
Twist: give him about 15 minutes and he’ll probably brand all of us as sexist for daring to question her opinion. It will probably take him that long to make the dubious mental connection between one -ism and the other.
@43 – Hondo, you’re an optimist. I give Joe half an hour to figure it out.
BTW I have to admit that I joined the military because a sergant who was standing in front of me at 7-11 bought $100 worth of pixie sticks and porno mags and with his 5% military discount, he only had to pay $95.
Pixie stix and porn. Hmmm. Thanks for sharing that, MJ.
I believe the saying goes something like “If you’re young and conservative, you have no heart. If you’re old and liberal, you have no brain.” She’s young. I wonder what the old liberal’s excuses are.
@46: I can’t be the only Futurama fan here.

don’t have a dog in this fight now, being out of service longer than she’s been alive, but do recall PCSing 9 times in 9 years, usually between continents, usually two addresses at least in local moves per duty station. Maybe one or two times ever GOING to a hardware store in that 9 years since I lived in quarters or apartments and wasn’t worth it to buy a home.
