That video from the USS Enterprise

| January 2, 2011

I’ve been reading about this supposedly “raunchy” video that the former XO and current commander (CPT Owen Honors) of the USS Enterprise made while the crew was finishing their 2007 cruise. From everything I’ve read, I was expecting something really disgusting. Our reader Matt sent me the video and I’ll tell you, I’m shocked.

Here’s how CNN described it;

Honors is shown cursing along with other members of his staff in an attempt to demonstrate humor, according to videos. There are also anti-gay slurs, simulated sex acts, and what appear to be two female sailors in a shower together.

Sounds pretty bad, huh? Well, here’s the video. You really owe it to yourself to watch the whole 12 minutes;

This is the tamest thing I could have expected. Anyone who gets their balls in a uproar over this bit of sophomoric behavior is a complete pussy. Yeah, OK, they used the F-bomb and they made some toilet jokes and a guy beating off to his maintenance manual is kind of funny, but I guess civilian journalists have a different idea of what is funny than real people.

The Huffington Post calls Honors the “Mastermind” behind the video. Mastermind. Jeez. The Virginia Pilot quotes a shipmember;

“They were the XO’s project,” said one former Enterprise sailor, a ship video-grapher who on one occasion was asked to help in the filming. “He was the one coming up with scripts and the jokes. He was the one planning it.”

The Pilot continues with a description of the “mastermind’s” video;

In one scene, two female Navy sailors stand in a shower stall aboard the aircraft carrier, pretending to wash each other. They joke about how they should get six minutes under the water instead of the mandated three.

In other skits, sailors parade in drag, use anti-gay slurs, and simulate masturbation and a rectal exam. Another scene implies that an officer is having sex in his stateroom with a donkey.

Really. Show me something anti-gay. The women in the shower were clothed and willing participants. And, oh, there’s also a scene with two guys in the shower soaping each other up. In drag? A guy runs through a scene with a bikini top. Who among us hasn’t used the “sex with a donkey” joke?

If what I saw is the entire video, I’d say “so fucking what?” This is the kind of nit-picking bullshit that continues to keep the military arms’ length from civilians. Of course, CNN and the Virginia Pilot hopes this rises to the level of the Tailhook Scandal, but it’s not even close. Most of the civilian dimwits won’t even see the video, but they’ll still complain about shit they’ve never seen…like they always do. Ignorant but vocal.

The Navy’s investigation should have ended twelve minutes after it began. But it won’t.

And, oh, Honors is a homeboy from Syracuse and we ain’t right.

Well, I have to say that since I drop the f-bomb more than that in regular conversation, I’m not too shocked. The “anti-gay” thing I think they’re claiming is the “fag” thrown in there a few times.

I thought that shit was hysterical, especially the parrot, which appears to be the mascot, and Glenn Close. 😀

Doc Bailey

wow. If they can’t deal with this, I’d hate to see what they’d say about some of the S**t I did on edployment

OldCavLt

Because of the slimeballs running the show these days, their collective careers are over.

George

Heaven forbid the XO of a ship should give a shit enough about his crew to make a video that many people would laugh about. This is what happens when you break away from all the boring BS and get some people to pay attention.

Sorry XO but I guess your career is fried. You’re not going to make it to Admiral now because you cared.

Goddamn I hate the path our military is taking now.

streetsweeper

Where’s the ol man Mullins? I’m gonna step out port side and smoke me a “fag”. He can join me if n he wants ta. A$$hat!

Away the Morale Suppression Team, away.

Sorry to be off topic but I have a quick question. You guys are the experts on stolen valor and fake vets – which is the main reason I read this sight. Have you heard anything about a fake vet that goes by the name of Bobby Thompson? From what I understand he claims to be ex-Navy and has stolen a ton of money claiming to be raising money for wounded vets. I have not heard this from a source I trust yet, which is why I am asking TAH.

BooRadley

….. can’t get right.

This is absolutely a lesson on how to waste the taxpayer money to create a conflict where there should be none. You know, it reminds me of when “sexual harassment” was a non-issue.

Example: when the CO might ask the well-endowed private on a PT run if her eyes were good…meaning- not black from the friction created by the bobbing boobs and then everyone else in the platoon had a good laugh, “victim” included.

We called it bonding, and I think this video is more of that…too bad the spin will end the career of this guy. There are much worse offenses, I am sure.

I guess videos for fun is now on a new list of what not to do…

Old Trooper

I’m sure the cupcakes were spitting their double non-fat soy latte all over their computer screen when they watched this. Bunch of fucking pussies. No wonder the bad guys are all laughing at us when we have a bunch of limp wrists crying like fucking school girls about some harsh words and bullshit like that. Ooooooo they were using gruff language and flipping the bird!!! What a bunch of candy-asses!

If I hear the word “inappropriate” one more time, I’m gonna have a psychotic episode!!

SSG David Medzyk

I wonder how shocked the Virginia Pilot will be, when they find out the Navy willingly kills muslims.

Stacy0311

that was fucking hilarious!!!
one of my squad leaders on a previous deployment made several morale films like that. One such film led to a full blown 15-6 investigation, sworn statements the whole 9 yards and resulted in a nonpunative letter of reprimand for my room mate. Luckily, I never actually appeared on camera where I could be recognized………….
If you ever see “Mandatory Fun Day”, “Monteith Plantation”, “Fantastic KFOR” or “The Last American Hero”, you’ll know what I’m talking about

baldon73

I watched the “Raunchy” video earlier today. SO FUCKING WHAT??
I’ve seen/heard/done much worse in many of the Restaurants/Bars I’ve worked in. I’ve had female bosses that would put that XO in friggin’ tears.Hell, I’ve seen worse on Public Access TV! This is what we’ve come to- the “HAPPY,HAPPY,EVERYONE GETS A PONY” bullshit where you can’t offend anyone. I never saw anti-gay rhetoric, nor anyone in the video who didn’t look like they were having fun. any of these assholes who got their little panties in a wad should try spending a week in an APC with 1/2 a dozen guys,or go to work in just about any restaurant and see how raunchy it gets.

HM2(FMF/SW)Ret

I jsut watched the video. I am so offended. F__King officers get real showers? We had the G______N car wash nozzles!

This reminds me of the ridiculous shit-fit they threw over the “Hadji Girl” song by the US Marine a few years back. The song was absolutely hilarious (“And then she said: ‘Durka Durka Mohammad Jihad. Sherpa Sherpa Bak Allah.’ Haji Girl I can’t understand what you’re sayin'”), but the terrorist a-holes at CAIR got their panties in a bunch and caused a stink about it.

Rich

So of all the crappy, racist, sexist, horrifying, low brow, and anti gay videos on the internet this is the one that makes people cringe with horror? It’s ok for civilian tards to make fun of the military but god forbid someone do it from the inside. What tools

Well, hold on there, man. Not all civvies are as riTARDed as these MF-ing media fucksticks and any liberals pushing this crap. I think most military-loving civilians have no problem with this stuff, especially “South Park Conservatives” such as myself and millions of others. The only civilians getting their panties in a twist about this crap are those who already have an irrational fear/hatred of the military.

Country Singer

The only thing I found offensive about that was that it was so tame…these bleeding hearts would stroke if they heard one my old XO’s port briefs, particularly the one immediately prior to anchoring off Pattaya Beach, Thailand…

Spockgirl

Hmm… in my capacity as “ignorant civilian” (label provided by Jacobite on a previous post), all I can say is I think this would make one heck of a Navy recruitment video.

MK Berle

I’m terribly offended by this video…because it wasn’t raunchy enough! Hard to believe the XO is in serious trouble over this nonsense. Such faux prudishness is the sign of a very unserious nation/society. These people are risking their lives, living ion lousy conditions to defend their country – and we’re worried about a few silly skits? Unreal. Slap the XO on the wrist (if at all) and move on. Yeesh.

Toothless Dawg

Hell, its a ton funnier than the alcohol and VD flicks they used to show us in the 60s

NHSparky

Jesus, one night in Subic, Pattaya, or even Sydney would have given these limp-wristed fucksticks seizures, to say nothing of “crossing the line” or Bluenose ceremonies.

“They drop fire on people from their jets, but aren’t allowed to write FUCK on them because it’s OBSCENE!”

Marlon Brando, Appocolypse Now

This is a joke right? People are upset over this????? Doesn’t surprise me in the least. The same people that are upset over this don’t mind porn not being filtered in public libraries for children to see. They will hang this guy…mark my words.

NHSparky

Dear CNN,

Show this video against a 12-minute clip of a Hollywood release such as, say, Porky’s, or Superbad, or The Hangover.

Now STFU and carry on.

Jacobite

The only thing wrong with this video is the lack of nudity, lol.
Echoing others here, it’s a shame this is gonna blight the XO’s career.

And Spockgirl, I don’t recall labeling you an ‘ignorant civilian’, but if I did, my apologies. 🙂

Miss Ladybug

So glad to know I have an irrational fear/hatred of the military because I think this is was grossly inappropriate for the XO to be doing.
/sarc

WOTN

Shocked I tell ya!
Those sailors were cussing like sailors.
They were so homophobic that they acted out gay shower scenes.

Is it time that we start a federal investigation on Hollywood? They’ve certainly put out raunchier videos seen internationally? Perhaps we should investigate Jerry Springer, which is watched internationally and a big reason muslims think so poorly of us.

Or perhaps we should insist that when Congressmen grope their staffers, it too should be videotaped?

Whatever; lets make a big deal out of nothing. The XO is responsible for moral on the boat. I would have enjoyed an XO such as Capt. Honors. So what if someone was offended; there are several channels to choose from. Nobody forced anyone to watch.

No worries… I figured your comment to be a generalization as to civilian ignorance, which I would tend to agree with. If I had taken actual offense, I just might have called you an arrogant prick, but that would be wrong. Heh.

I figured your comment to be a generalization as to civilian ignorance, which I would tend to agree with. ========== I tend to agree with the generalization as well, unfortunately. But while most civilians don’t understand military culture in general — and really can’t understand unless they actually are a part of it through family or spouses in the military… and even then, can’t fully understand it without experiencing it themselves — I think the majority of civilians nowadays admire and respect the members of the military and give them the benefit of the doubt on issues such as this. And I think this has a lot to do with Reagan and Bush 41 turning around the perception of our military in the 80s and early 90s. I was a Freshman in High School when my Biology teacher — a really well liked teacher in the school as well — was called to duty for Operation Desert Storm as he was a medic. He left mid-semester around OCT or NOV, I believe in 1990. That was my first experience knowing anyone in the military. That war effort, I believe, was also the first one that was televised on CNN, so people could see what was going on. I still remember the amazing rendition of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl that year and I believe the NHL All-Star game was in Chicago and they blew the roof off with their screaming and cheering for the National Anthem there. So I grew up in a time when America loved and respected its military. The IVAWs and VoteVets and VetsforPeace and ANSWER types are no longer the default view of the civilian public, but are now relegated to fringe radicals. I think if you ask anyone who has any type of connection to the military what groups they think of first, organizations come to mind such as Patriot Riders, Soldiers Angels, America Supports You, Operation Gratitude, the USO, etc. So while there is definitely still a culture gap between those who serve and civilians, I don’t think the gap is as… Read more »

Here’s my proposed defense for the Captain: “No Navy property or personnel were physically or mentally harmed in the filming of these videos, unlike what that bitch holly graf did…”

xjarhead44

Finally navy guy with some balls, everyone should write their congressman, give the squid a hand he is just trying to keep moral up.

gbodge

As a former bubblehead (84-90), I can say that this is nothing compared to our half-way nights on an SSBN, shell back events, or the submarine qualification process as a whole. Anyone who was offended by this has obviously not watched TV after 9 PM or been to a recent movie. I am glad that I bailed on the Navy while it was still a shadow of the organization that my father would have recognized from WW II.

ROS

You have got to be shitting me………

In defense of CPT Honors, I would like to offer those who’d derail his career train an all expenses paid 2-day stay in my home so that they may experience true obscenity.

I’ll even bake them fucking cookies.

Adirondack Patriot

Watch this case carefully.

You can expect more of these complaints, particularly about previous anti-gay slurs made prior to the repeal of DADT.

Gays who served quietly under DADT will now be able to openly come out in protest of prior, perceived “anti-gay” acts. Previously, they had to sit in silence for fear of retribution or outing. Now, they can gun for the officer or SPO they always hated.

Plus, they’ll become media darlings with Katy Couric crowning them as a modern day Rosa Parks. (See Dan Choi)

Welcome to the New Normal.

Civi

Oooh, Cursing in the military. My, my.

If anything, as a civi, I saw an XO who understands his crew, values their morale as critical to the mission, and is willing to be self-deprecating.

If anything, he demonstrates a real-life awareness of some of the issues in the military (sex, homosexuality) and seems understanding of them.

Commander Honors is a man I’m glad is fighting for us!

JonP

This is it??? This is what has the media in such a fucking uproar? Sweet weeping jesus I heard more f-bombs my first day of jump school than in the whole video. The humor was dumb, the jokes dumb and that was just the point. To relieve the tension on a long cruise and see the xo and other officers in a different light. People need to get a grip on themselves and tell the screaming dickwads in the press to shut-the-fuck-up.

Civi

Seems ok in the Army.

Civi

“In a statement to the Virginian-Pilot on Friday, however, the Navy said it had put a stop to videos with ‘inappropriate content'” on the Enterprise several years ago.”

Oh really, so the top brass has known for years.

Jorge

Yep, the crew of the ship was subjected to this, but they are still watching videos on their iPods and personal laptops of rappers dropping much worse in “music” videos, watching uncut movies of Hollywood performers doing the same.

I do not condone a senior officer doing the same on an official Navy circuit, it is inappropriate.

But people should realize that the military is tough, rough and we don’t need their nanny state c**p. If an individual had an issue with the videos, they need to take it up the chain of command. This is what the CAPT had an issue with; simply have the honor, courage and commitment to follow understand the process of issuing a grievance. Not following the process implies consent. I think this is a hit tactic by the mass media, bored with the current news.

OK… I just wanted to comment on the biggest non-story of the day that “exposes” the fact that sailors sometimes use salty language and humor to break up a long and arduous deployment. No kidding…. Really? No Shit.

This story is obviously being pushed by a bunch of land locked lubbers who have never spent a day at sea and have NO idea how difficult that can be. This Skipper is the kind of officer that inspires his crew to follow him anywhere.

Like other Submariners here I remember halfway night celebrations that make this video seem like an episode of “Barney”.

The only message this “Tempest in a Teapot” sends to the Navy is “Levity is secured until morale improves.”

UpNorth

“Sweet weeping Jesus I heard more f-bombs my first day of jump school than in the whole video”. I heard more f-bombs in my first hour at basic, at Ft. Knox, from the time the door on our bus opened and a corporal screamed, “get the fuck off my bus”. And these, um, “people” are offended by an f-bomb, or a “fag” reference, and the simulation of two women taking a shower?

And, I agree, Jorge, with the hit tactic, but I suspect it’s a chair-warmer, or someone pissed that CPT Honor got “their” command, or as AP said, this is the “new” military post-DADT.

Lord help Audie Murphy is he ever uttered the descriptive word for a gay male, his MOH is toast, it’ll have to re-awarded to Choi-Toi.

Jorge

No kidding about the “ceremonies” Ray. I did Bluenose and “initiated a few shipmates on following missions; it was fun. I remember a few folks opted out, but they were asked just to stay out of the way if they didnt want to participate. People enjoyed the silliness and the great dinner that followed (Submarine CS’s rock!!)

If people think this is bad, try hot-racking and finding your rackmates sock on the pillow…

CTIC(SG) (Retired)

Bubblehead Ray

My gut feeling on this is the video was leaked by someone on board who wanted to delay or stop the deployment.

ROS

And then you have those who parrot this horseshit:

“The sad thing is that this guy will probably make millions despite his inappropriate behavior and probable dishonorable discharge. This is the “wikileaks” era…there’s always someone willing to watch and pay big $$$ for it. I think my dad, who served on the Big E during Vietnam, would agree.

Whether in the name of maintaining morale or not, a CO at that level should have had the forsight to see the potential negative outcomes of engaging in behavior that could be interpreted as inappropriate should evidence of those actions be made public-a virtual certainty in today’s word.”

Jeff

NHSparky and gbodge are absolutely friggin’ right on the money. The scheisse we pulled in Subic, Patio Beach, and other unnamed villes in Korea would put the good idiots in the MFMSM too their knees. What I went through going from wog to shellback would make their eyes bleed (especially since I was a Marine and my brownshoe navy buddies wanted some payback). This is an outstanding Skipper trying to motivate his troops with some ship-wide humor that all the troops understood. Hence, that’s why it didn’t surface until 2 years later when some friggin’ pussy crybaby found it. He should be promoted for his Naval Officer’s ethic.

Holy shit has this gotten ridiculous. Even the usually military-supporting people over at AoSHQ are getting their panties in a twist about this: NBC News: Navy Will “Temporarily” Relieve USS Enterprise Captain Over Videos

I love how Brian Williams begins his report by saying the stuff in the video isn’t suitable for a family audience. Well sport, it wasn’t intended for a family audience. It was aimed at an audience of adults who were spending 6 months at war.

As for Captain Honors… how they hell could he have put himself in this situation? It can’t be a mystery to a US Navy Captain that repeatedly dropping ‘fag’ on videos and some of those other jokes was going to end well for anyone. I get that some of it was funny but dude isn’t paid to be funny. As an experienced pilot and officer he has to have some situational awareness here.

“Situational awareness” my ass. That’s just bullshit. I’ve heard worse shit in a men’s locker room. This is nothing more than some asshole who is getting back at Honors now that DADT has been repealed. For all those fuckers who said that DADT wouldn’t ruin our military, well, here we are. Great job, fucksticks.

Here’s a link to a Support Captain Owen Honors — USS Enterprise page on Facebook. Yeah, it won’t do anything to stop this bullshit, but whatever.
