Need Navy help with a possible Poser.
I was cursingcruising POW network and ran into a new one that caught my eye.
He was wearing the rank of a Petty Officer second class in aviation mechanic but I most of his medals were Army and the ones on there raised some questions. Not to mention the order.
The Claim according to POW network.
Claims he is in the Navy and he is originally from the Virginia Beach/ Norfolk area but currently resides in Madison, Virginia. Claimed that he would be stationed in Norfolk then he said he was going to move to Spain then he said he had a choice between going to California, Florida, and Hawaii. All of the sudden he could not go to Hawaii because his commanding officer, a lieutenant, was arrested and he was promoted to lieutenant. Then he could remain living in Madison because he got a job at the Pentagon working for the CIA. Now, he does not have to go to active duty because he is using his GI bill to get his college degree.
According to his myspace page he is 33 years old and he could have possibly earned the Southwest Asian Service Medal. But were the Campaign Star, every medal should have at least one. Also how can one who is suppose to be a former NCO in the Army and Navy mess up in putting a decoration after the service medals and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon. Just about everything is in the wrong order. Also the lack of a GWOT medal and Star on the National Defense Medal also stands out.
Also this is were I wondering from those who are in the Navy/Marine side. What medals/ribbons would someone have after coming over from other Branches. Also is there any medals/ribbons that the Navy does not allow to transfer over to the Navy Uniform? Also I have a question about keeping rank coming from other Branches.
Non-Navy Veterans
If the Veteran holds a skill that is directly covertable to a Navy Rating, they are usually enlisted at one paygrade lower than they held at time of discharge, but not lower than E-3. If the veteran does not have a skill directly covertable to a Navy rating, they enlist at the grade of E-3, regardless of previously held rank, in most cases (there are a few exceptions).
For those who hold a skill that is directly convertable to a Navy Rating, the following criteria must be met:
* E-1 through E-3 –Must have 6 or less years of prior service, and no more than 5 Years Broken Service.
* E-4 –Must have 6 or less years of prior service, and no more than 3 Years Broken Service.
* E-5 -Must have 8 or less years of prior service, and no more than 3 Years Broken Service.
* E-6 – Must have 12 or less years of prior service, and no more than 3 Years Broken Service.
In addition to the above criteria, all prior service must be able to complete 20 years of service by age 55. No waivers are authorized.
The Device on the Good Conduct Medal suggest 6 years + and with the regs it again could be possible. But I am not so sure. Also I found a list of Petty Officers second class with the name of the person showing up under a section called Ati2 I have not been able to find anything on what that means. I was hoping to see one someone might know.
I suspect a fake but I am not 100% sure yet, that is the reason why I have not put up his name or photo. I emailed his wife and asked similar questions about the medals and ribbons so I hope to get a reply soon.
ADDED:
I have some new info that says that he joined the Navy in 2003 and left the Navy in about 2009. So that brings into question were are the Navy Good Conduct medals, Marksmanship ribbons and GWOT service medal.
He goes from giving good conduct in the Army to not getting a single Good Conduct medal in the Navy? Or not going to a rifle range in six years? Plus no one telling him about the GOWT medal?
Now his wife is claiming that the medals that he is wearing are from a late family member that served 20 years in the military. He was just wearing them to “honor” her.
Category: Phony soldiers
Well, he definitely did not get promoted from PO2 to Lieutenant.
The Army NCO Development Ribbon is not authorized for wear on a Navy Uniform-at least not according to this: (scroll down to the bottom).
And he has the order of precedence reversed on the SW Asia and National Defense ribbons.
I also see that the Army Service Ribbon that is not allowed ether.
“All of the sudden he could not go to Hawaii because his commanding officer, a lieutenant, was arrested and he was promoted to lieutenant…Now, he does not have to go to active duty because he is using his GI bill to get his college degree.”
If he doesn’t have a college degree already then he isn’t an officer.
The rating is Naval Aviation Structural Mechanic. That would likely put him at major navy duty stations with either carriers or naval air wings, so all the locations he mentions would be legitimate, although Florida was a bit vague. Can’t say much about the medals but Second Class Petty Officer being promoted to Lieutenant without having a degree is 99% BS. In the navy there are LDO’s (Limited Duty Officers) that don’t have degrees but they are fairly rare and usually come from the enlisted Chief’s ranks (E7 & above), maybe 1st Class Petty Offier, but 2nd Class is a big stretch. Working for the CIA at the Pentagon and living in Madison is a good 3 hour commute, one way. And going to college, where?, Lynchburg College maybe, or an hour commute, one-way, to Charlottesville, to go to UVA. As a navy vet I can see some of this but there is a collection of small stuff that does ring right. There is smoke here.
excuse me, “does not ring right”
AT is an aviation electronics technician. There is either I level or O level. I= bench tech. O= flight line tech. Unless he’s in the reserves, chances that he’s an OSVET are slim.
Here’s the AT rating badge insignia:
I also can’t understand how a PO2 would go around wearing unauthorized ribbons and especially in the wrong order. SOMEBODY would have called him on that by now. (His LPO or Chief) Going from PO2 to LT is pretty much impossible. Maybe from PO2 to Warrant or Ensign. He’d pretty much have to have a degree any more to even get Chief, let alone LDO. And…… NO Enlisted Aviation Warfare Designation?? Ain’t no way in hell that he’d get promoted without that in today’s Navy from what I’ve heard and read.
* I should say, no way in hell would he get promoted past PO1 with no EAWS designation.
Good catch, Thor…I overlooked the warfare pin.
I’ll bet this gent is reading this so let me say if you are navy you know the rules when you get busted. Fess up, correct the record, and the Captain will very likely smack you with some NJP, and move on, or try to beat the rap and get no mercy if you don’t. The same rules apply here. So if you are legit, get it out there now, if not, think about it. If you are not navy then we bubbleheads have a saying that applies, “Run Silent, Run Deep” because these guys won’t let up.
This guy is sort of weird. This is the first time I’ve seen one featured who was content to pretend to just be an undistinguished low-level cog in the machine.
Well let’s see if I can get the Army Ribbons in the right order for him since that is my branch.
He has the Army Achievement Medal (AAM) on the lower bar as the furthest to the left. (Left as in looking at the pic) This would be the top most ribbon as it is the highest award he has that I can tell. He has the next 2 after the AAM, the Army Overseas and the Basic Training ribbons in reverse order. The Basic Training ribbon is the lowest ranking ribbon a soldier can have in most cases. On the 2nd row he would have the NCODP (the Army NCO schools) Green and Yellow ribbon then the National Defense then the Good Conduct. I do not know what the top ribbon is from the pic but in place of it would be the AAM previously mentioned. I’ll leave the squid debate to the squids but this idiot is a pathetic poser.
The Navy, when I was in, only awarded Good Conduct medals for 4-year terms. Also, maybe my tired old eyes aren’t working so well, but it looks like he’s missing a Sea Service Deployment ribbon. How anyone can make PO2 without at least one deployment is pretty hard to understand.
As to being an AT, he could easily be assigned at NAS Jacksonville. There’s several P-3 squadrons there. Hawaii would be Barbers Point.
AS to a commission, the Navy still has a good LDO (Limited Duty Officer) program, and a couple friends of mine went that pipeline. You have to be at least an E-5, with 2 years of college and a clean record. Additionally, there has to be slots available in the program you are applying for, and you need certain skill sets that match up too. Today’s Navy, though highly values college degrees, and as was said above, actually making it into the CPO ranks, let alone LPO without a 4-year degree is nigh on impossible.
Guy looks to me like a poseur. Someone ought to have a couple Shore Patrol folks or NCIS types have a little chat with him.
Grunt,
The top one is the Southwest Asia Service Medal which was awarded for Desert Storm/Sheild from 1990-95. He would have had to been there right out of basic to get it and it should fall well below the AAM on his rack…
I live relatively close to Madison VA, where is this POS supposedly hanging out at…I could pay him a visit.
There is another route from PO2 to LT, namely going to medical school. In this case, I doubt it.
As one looks at his ribbons, the one on the lower right is a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. (His lower left)It’s not impossible for an Airedale to NOT have a Sea tour by the time they are PO2. It all depends on to which squadron he has been assigned. I still would like to know if this guy is a Reservist or not. IF he is then that could change things significantly. When I was recruiting,(Navy), I worked hand in hand with the Navy reserve recruiters. There ARE accession programs for the reserves that can even get a civilian in up to E-6. OSVETS would be easy to access as a PO2.
That said, it STILL doesn’t excuse his blatant disregard for Navy uniform regs and his order of precedence.
For the record, I was an AT. I managed to sidestep that ATO/ ATI conversion.(I should have been converted to ATO) Other than my tour on recruiting, I was helicopter maitenance.
Drop a “flash bang” and see what crawls out.
AW1 Tim–they shortened it from 4 years to 3 for a GCM when I was in.
About the only way one goes from E-5 to the officer ranks (Ensign, not LT) is Seaman-to-Admiral, and that’s when they’ll send you to college. But without a warfare pin, there’s no way he’d be picked up. LDO requires you to be at least CPO board eligible E-6 or above, and without a warfare pin (actually, double warfare these days) hang it up.
And since when are CO’s LT’s? OIC’s are as a minimum LCDR’s, CO’s of squadrons or even smaller units are typically CDR’s.
OT–if he got the SWA Medal in the 90-95 timeframe, wouldn’t it also stand to reason he should possibly have a Kuwait Liberation Medal to go along with it? Or were they handing out SWA Medals after that?
WTF?
Sparky,
The cutoff for Kuwaiti Liberation Medal was ’93. It is possible to have one and not the other. All other criteria is the same for both except the date.
In other words Sparky, he’s too young to have the KLM but barely old enough for SWA. If he was wearing the KLM he would be an obvious fraud.
@Sparky, it’s possible to have the SW Asia ribbon without the Kuwait Liberation medal. The Saudi KLM is: Service must have been performed in support of Operation Desert Storm and the liberation of Kuwait, between 17 January 1991 to 28 February 1991. Eligible areas include: * The Persian Gulf * The Red Sea * That portion of the Arabian Sea that lies north of 10 degrees north latitude and west of 68 degrees east longitude * The Gulf of Aden * The total areas of Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates In addition, those personnel must have: * Been attached to or regularly serving for one or more days with an organization participating in ground and/or shore operations; * Been attached to or regularly serving for one or more days aboard a naval vessel directly supporting military operations; * Actually participated as a crew member in one or more aerial flights supporting military operations in the areas designated above; or, * Served on temporary duty for 30 consecutive days during the qualifying period. Note: That time limitation may be waived for personnel who actually participated in combat operations. The Kuwaiti KLM is: Criteria: Awarded to members of the Military Coalition who served in support of Operation Desert Shield or Desert Storm in one or more of the following areas between 2 August 1990 and 31 August 1993: Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden, that portion of the Arabian Sea that lies north of 10 degrees north latitude and west of 68 degrees east longitude, as well as the total land areas of Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. To be eligible, a service member must have been: (1) attached to or regularly serving for one or more days with an organization participating in ground/shore (military) operations; (2) attached to or regularly serving for one or more days aboard a naval vessel directly supporting military operations; (3) actually participating as a crew member in one or more aerial flights directly supporting military operations in the… Read more »
So yes, it’s possible at age 33 to have a SWA, but only just.
That rating badge he’s sporting is AM (Aviation Structural Mechanic) (crossed hammers), not AT (atom in the center). See http://www.navy.mil/navydata/ratings/navrate.html for the full menu. If he’s claiming to be an AT, he’s wearing someone else’s uniform.
I have a newly discharged Navy vet right down the street from me. Gonna have him come read this, Believe he had a six year stretch as an avionics tech.
Otherwise, this wanna-be water dog is chasing his tail around in circles. I get the same emails Jonn does. Work has been keeping me hooked up like tom cat on the prowl in an alley.
Thor–Navy Warrant programs are even harder to get into than the LDO program, although many of the requirements are the same. HOWEVER, apparently there’s a “Flying WO” program (until at least 2011) that takes E-5 through E-7 with at least an Associates, and commissions them as a CWO2, then trains them to be crews or operate on P-3’s, E-60’s, and E-6’s. But again, I’d be more than sure that this guy without a warfare designator wouldn’t be considered a serious candidate, not to mention one does NOT go from E-5 to full LT.
Also found more information on the WO flight program. Only 30 of them right now, and they only picked guys who were going to be 27 or younger when they were commissioned (29 for NFO).
I smell bullshit from this guy.
Active Navy here. There is absolutely no way one can go from an e-5 to an LT. For the LDO program, you HAVE to be an e-6 testing for e-7. period. No waivers, no nothing. They don’t just pick e-5’s out to become an LT. For the warrant program, you HAVE to be an e-7 before going warrant. I don’t know this guys whole story, but if he really was Navy, or active anything for that matter, why doesnt he have the GWOTS, which is pretty much a gimme for all who join the services at this point. It’s been a long day, but I don’t see any Navy specific ribbons on his chest. I’m throwing out the bullshit flag.
Yeah,
No way this guy is legit. I did a stretch from 87-97, and I know a lot has changed since then, but the order of precedence for awards has not. His (supposed) awards are all out of whack, and he shouldn’t have the Army NCO ribbon on a Navy uniform.
UT1 Seabee is right… no way he jumps from E-5 to LT, or even O-1.
I believe (but I could be wrong, I was an airdale) that they used to make some LT’s CO’s of small boats, similar to what the USCG does. But, even if they still do, an aviation rated E-5 with no SWO or EAWS is NOT going to get that job, PERIOD!
I think this guy is full of it, and he should be made to explain himself.
First off … He would not even be eligible for an LDO program at E-5. It is a program for E-6+ with outstanding evaluations through out his career with an Early Promote eval as his last. No where does it say you must have a warfare insignia or have college education in order to be picked up for the program but it is highly recommended. I am an AT3 (AW/SW). E-4 with both EAWS and ESWS (Enlisted Aviation Warfare and Enlisted Surface Warfare) if ever you are on a ship everyone in your chain pushes for at least one and you will not get an Early Promote eval without it. His rate is AM2 Aviation Machinist mate second class. It was possible about 6 years ago to go from Navy enlisted E-5 or above to Army WO1 but that program stopped about 4 years ago as far as i am aware. Commissioning from E-5 to O-3 because some LT got arrested…. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. They would simply remove the officer from his duties and replace him with an already commissioned officer from somewhere else. There is a lot more to becoming commissioned now days than someone saying hey you’re an officer now good luck. It’s very insulting for someone to post this kind of crap info. Even reservists work hard for their commissioning. Maybe i’m missing part of the story since i didn’t see his original post and all but it sounds to me to be B/S.
Could someone link his original post i would like to read it and maybe submit it to my CO as an example of lack of Honor. lol
AW2–he MIGHT be able to go E-5 to O-1 as Seaman-to-Admiral if he was younger, and that’s about it. There he’d keep all his pay and allowances and be eligible for advancement, plus up to $10K a year for college expenses (and GI Bill, but no Navy College Fund). However, selection under STA-21 is pretty strict, and looking at that guy’s chest I’d say no way, not to mention he doesn’t meet the age requirement.
In fact, IIRC, since the late 1990’s everyone E-5 and above on sea duty had 18 months to get a pin or be Not Recommended. Now the MCPON and CNO have made it MANDATORY for ALL personnel to earn warfare designations:
So yeah, I smell bullshit. Again.
AT3: The Army warrant program is still alive. e-5’s can cross over and become a WO1 in the same community you were in the Navy. I thought about it, but I have way too much Seabee in me to become Army. He could go STA-21. But, that is where you get out of the Navy, go to school(have to finish Bachelors in 36 months) and then you come back in as an O1e. There is absolutely no way humanly possible for an e-5 to jump to 0-3 in the Navy. Someone please tell me how an e-5 aviation mechanic manages to get orders to the Pentagon working for the CIA? Everyone in the Navy knows you need to have your warfare pin to work at the CIA, end sarc..
So since everyone wants to give their little opinions, I will certainly clear up a few things about MY HUSBAND! The little bio that is on here is completely wrong, I have no clue where you idiots are getting this info from, but none of it is true. First, he does not live in Madison, Va. That is my hometown, some idiot got my hometown off of Myspace. We don’t live anywhere near Madison, Va, so whoever it was that wanted to pay a visit, sorry honey! Second, he is not orginally from Virginia Beach, so wrong again! Third, he nor I have ever talked about going to Spain or Hawaii or any of those other places and it was never discussed that he was working for the CIA at the Pentagon. And then where in the world did a Lt get arrested and my husband took over his job?!?
Seriously, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! Whoever made all of this up is out of their mind and need to get a life! I would love to know how this false info was gathered? Are you seriously that bored?
And by reading all of the posts on here I assume most of you are military, and you should know that not just anyone can get a military ID, you cant make one up with a chip on it! And not just anyone can use the Montgomery G.I. Bill, the government checks into all of that before they pay for your school and pay you your BAH!
I honestly find this all to be disrespectful!
This is what I know. Your husband’s name is ********** who is about 33 years old. Found him while looking up the new claims on POW network. He is the fifth one from the bottom. You can contact them about the other claims, For me the biggest thing that I have questions about is the ribbon rack. The ribbon rack has my attention for several reasons. The many misplaced ribbons is something that a Army NCO who has 6 years in service and a NCO in the Navy with 12 years in service would make. Or how he went 12 years without correcting him. Also he is wearing two ribbons that are not allowed on the Navy uniform. They are the NCO Professional Development Ribbon (Middle on the second row) and the Army Service Ribbon (Bottom third row). Again something that NCO in the Navy in 6 years should know and/ or someone correcting him. Also if anyone every earned a personal award like the Army Achievement medal that it is on top before anything else, not on the lowest row and certainly not after Campaign service medals let alone Service Ribbons. The next issue is the timeline because there are some medals that you can only earn in certain years. The South Western Asian Service Medal was given between 1990 and 1995, the one that he is wearing at the very top of the rack. So because of this award I would imagine was in 1994/1995 when he would be old enough, complete Basic/AIT and be deployed before the close of 1995. The Army Good conduct medal with at least a two knot device that is used for 6 years of service that would put him at ether 2000 or 2001 as far as being in the Army. Then he joins the Navy in 2003, to about 2009 at what rank? Also what was the highest rank that he was promoted to. (It would also help what rank was before he got promoted) Next comes to what I do not see. There are several things that are missing awards… Read more »
Well I don’t appreciate the pictures being posted, and the information in your bio is false. I will be contacting the people on the POW Network as well. And like I previously explained to you in the email, the picture was taken last minute, I was in town visiting my mother and she suggested we take a picture, the uniform wasnt up to date with all his medals and awards, it’s not the one he usually wears. He doesnt keep every single one of his uniforms up to date.
He didnt fake his way into anything and he is not “pretending” to be in the military. He joined, went through boot camp and DID EVERYTHING BY THE BOOK!
It would be very different if you had asked me the questions first and not just start up this little blog…how would you feel if someone did this to you? How would your wife feel? How about your son? Did you think about any of that?
And with the GI Bill, you cant make false reports to them, you fill out the forms and they have to check everything out. I was with him when he filled out the forms and I have been with him when he has spoken to the people regarding his GI Bill (and the phone was on speaker phone).
At least look into things before you make false claims!
And let me ask this…why isn’t there a blog on the real phonies out there? Why single out my husband who was really in the military?
Well I do not appreciate the pictures being up there, nor all the false information. I have already corrected you, put that’s a losing battle. I see it like this, you are going to have your opinion and not going to change it.
I will be contacting the POW Network to get all this cleared up.
Honestly, this would be different if you had asked the questions BEFORE putting this little blog up! Why couldnt you ask the questions first? And better yet, how would you feel if something like this was about you? How would your wife feel? What about your son?
This reminds me of high school, rumors and gossip being dicussed and all of you are grown men!
And as I previously told you in the message I sent you on Myspace, the picture was last minute, I had gone home to visit family and they wanted us to take a formal picture for an engagement photo. The uniform was not up to date, he had grabbed the wrong one before leaving home. He doesn’t keep all of his uniforms up to date with all the medals and awards.
My husband did not fake his way into anything, he went through boot camp and A/T, he did everything by the books.
Regarding the GI Bill, you cant fake papers for that in order for them to pay your tuition and BAH, they check into everything before giving you any money. I was with him when he filled out the forms and I have been with him on the phone when he has spoken to the people regarding his GI Bill. Everything is legit.
Why are you singling out my husband, when he is in the military? Why isn’t there blogs on the phony people????
Who is this POS? I am a Poser Hunter. Please go to my facebook site and PM me all his information. I will have his service record book delivered. My friend creates a web site for these guys. It’s new but growing. No competition with others. I share all data. http://posers.jeffrey-lippold.info/
POS?!? All of you need to grow up and get a fucking life! Find someone who is a poser, not someone who is telling the truth! I explained everything to the asshole that created this little blog, but all of you jack-offs are still at it!
Seriously, grow the fuck up!
@ Live{Laugh}Love: Your excuses are lame. I don’t care who one is, if they were EVER in the Navy, they’d know the uniform regs. That ribbon rack was thrown together, something that any Sailor with ANY service in excess of two years or being a Petty Officer, would know NOT to do. They would have been gigged on their first personnel inspection, hopefully by their LPO or Division Chief. I’ve had to come home on emergency leave a few times. Every single time, I brought my uniform. Every single time, my uniform was correct and inspection ready. This Sailor is NOT buying your pathetic lies.
USN(ret) sends…
“He doesnt keep every single one of his uniforms up to date.”
Then he certainly isn’t an officer or a NCO worth a shit. I learned BEFORE graduating boot camp that ALL my uniforms were to be “inspection ready” at ALL TIMES.
I’m throwing the bullshit flag on ya.
“I explained everything to the asshole that created this little blog”
LLL, A little education might be in order here. First off, this is not a ‘little’ blog. It’s nationally recognized and highly ranked within the military blogosphere. Second, hyperbolic attacks are never the best way to make your point or attain a goal, you’re distancing yourself from success in a hurry.
One last thing, and I think most here would agree, the possible poser certainly does his case no good by sending his wife out to do battle for him, and if you’re doing it without his knowledge you should be aware that you are doing his cause more harm than good. Fastest way to clear things up would be for him to come forward and explain himself.
US Army(ret) sends….
Also I know that you lied to me about having intentions of going to Spain.
and in ur lil description of my husband, he does not live in Madison, Va thats my hometown. we were never going to spain or hawaii…where do u find ur info?!?!? u need to check ur sources!
i would love to know how u make up your info!
Except that you posted this back in December 2008 to a Navy Wife online group.
hi! I was wondering if anyone is currently living in Spain! my husband and I are moving there later this month!
Kinda make you wonder how you were going to go to Spain for a extended period of time when you told me he got out in Nov 2008.
I came across this page via a friend and I must ask why everyone here feels the need to blast some man on here. And according to what I see, no one even asked questions to the man or his wife before the page was started. I do not think it is right, you handle matters like this Privately, not posted for the world to see. If he is innocent, and I’m not saying he is, then every last one of you owes him an apology.
And if he’s innocent, he’ll get an apology. But if one is man enough to publicly claim accolades they didn’t earn, or claim service they didn’t perform, then they can take their ridicule in public as well.
As has been stated, the easiest way to clear it up would be for the accused to come forward and clarify the glaring discrepancies and inconsistencies in his self told history. He’s had over a month to do so and hasn’t, that speaks volumes all by its self.
“I do not think it is right, you handle matters like this pivatley, not posted for the world to see.”
When you make public representations of yourself by wearing military awards in public and posting photos of yourself wearing those awards to publicly viewable websites, you’d better be damn well prepared to have them questioned publicly, if discrepancies are noted. It’s exceedingly simple to prove the accuracy of one’s awards if they are deserved.
And seriously, don’t get so bent out of shape. No one posted this guy’s name or photo, and you can’t even find out who he is unless you dig through the comments posted in response to his wife’s unwarranted reaction, follow links and do some reading. In the scope of phonies outed on TAH, this one has been handled with kid gloves.
Also one thing that I should be brought up is that both InfantryMan and Live{Laugh}Love have the same IP address. I just know how shocked everyone is.
Virginia Community College System? Fer realz? Seriously, hon, you’ve got to try harder than that. Oh, and your horrific spelling and atrocious syntax under multiple user names is kind of a dead giveaway.
And it’s nice to note that after all this, there has been no clarification forthcoming. Speaks volumes, really.
