Girard David Pugsley III aka JJ Pugsley, Not a Navy SEAL
The staff at militaryphony.com send us their case on Girard Pugsley. It seems that many people were under the impression that he was a Navy SEAL.
He is active in the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts community). For some reason people got the impression that he completed training to become a Navy SEAL, our guess is its things like this that probably had something to do with it:
There are many other reasons for all this misunderstanding.
Of course his records and their investigation show something entirely different.
Apparently, Mr. Pugsley did attempt to become a Navy SEAL. That is more than most can ever say. However he was dropped from the program before he completed the basic school required to serve as a Navy SEAL. Probably the claim of him being a Combat Diver is some kind of misunderstanding as well. In any event, QM2 Pugsley has come forward to admit that he was not a Navy SEAL and should have been more pro active about correcting the claims that he was.

We are just glad that we have this opportunity to help him clear all that up. As of yesterday, he seems to be very concerned about people having the false impression that he served as a Navy SEAL.

I think I remember running into this guy and a few other EOD guys that he was with back around fall of ’04 in the food court in the NEX at North Island. I have no clue why he would have felt the need to add in all the extra SEAL crap. EOD guys always had my respect.

Kinda funny he says he went to Combatant dive School…which a SEAL doesn’t need because dive phase is in BUDS, but doesn’t mention Basic Airborne or MFF which are actually follow ons that all SEALS have to attend.

None in mine (2013), just SEAL support folks – I’d heard they started their own static line jump school in the early 2000’s some time, since they weren’t excited about how the Army crams three days of training into three weeks. For nimrods like me, that extra practice was vital, but for guys like that, it was probably a total waste of time…
I remember some went to Lakehurst, and some Recon HMs were lucky enough to go there too…but that shut down.
SEALs have their own JM course(s). I had a billet there, but our funding was cut, so I didn’t get to go. The Army command I was with needed JMs, but wouldn’t fund me, because I was a in the Navy Detachment. SARCs are bahstid children, everybody want ya to deploy, but they don’t want to fund your schools. At least the pipeline now ensures the most needed basic schools are attended.
Not mine, but there were some Force Recon ahead of us … somewhere.
One morning around September/October 1980 a huge “FORCE RECON” banner was hanging from one of the arms of the 250 tower.

Mine too in ’63. They drove the Black Hats nuts. They’d be told to drop and do 25. They’d say “That’s all? Can I do 50?”
There were two SEALS in my platoon at Ranger School. We loved those guys, as you could always count on them to do their part and then some. They always volunteered to swim the rope across the water obstacle we had to bridge or cross. Unfortunately they did not get the tab because they could not pass at least half of their leadership positions, especially in Florida where we were operating as an infantry platoon in CI ops.
It is obvious that Pug isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed.

Many, many moons ago the Navy/USMC had a combat swimmers course. The faker is way too young to even attempt to claim that as part of his training.
Back in the early days Navy EOD incorporated both the combat swimmer and diver training into the school. In the mid to late 90s the diving phase was “pipeline” training, specifically for EOD, and is still in Panama City, FL.
These days if a guy is “preselected” for Navy EOD training, his training starts in bootcamp. Extra PT and a lot of swimming. In this case, from day one in bootcamp, to diver training, to EOD School, to jump school (FT Benning), to small squad tactics, to direct action training, it can be well over a year before you get to your first duty station as a qualified EOD Tech.
Then there’s getting teamed up, team training and team certification before you deploy.
The Marine Mammal System (MMS) program at one time belonged to the SEALs. IIRC the MMS transferred to Navy EOD in the late 80s. At the time, MMS consisted of seals and bottle-nosed dolphins. They were used for various underwater purposes, but I will only get into one role (I’ve been out for almost 2 decades and some programs/roles were classified when I got out).
The one role (unclassified) is the use of both type animals in an underwater mine counter measures mission. They are trained to locate objects underwater that have a mine-like appearance, whether a bottom laying sea mine or a buoyant type in the water column.
EOD has billets for SUPPORT types community wide, including the MMS. However, during my active duty days only EOD Techs were MMS handlers. This faker, being in the Navy when he was, as a QM2 tells me he was a support type.
Probably the closest this idiot got to being a MMS handler was as a small boat driver or helping to feed them.
Recon Corpsmen also supported the Marine Mammal Program. as I said though, we scrubbed those billets out in the 90s.
About forty years ago I attended the USMC Amphibious Recon Course at Little Creek, VA. Those jarheads smoked us everyday. Suddenly, we had to do flutter kicks in addition to push-ups. But it paid off when we had to get in the water with swim fins. I still have the beach survey map we made. With that said, I would never claim to be a combat swimmer or marine recon.
Good old days. I’d get a lot more done these days if I had a platoon sergeant again. Lol
