Albert Seely; phony Marine Corps hero
The folks at Military Phony send us their work on this fellow, Albert Seely. He was easy to catch, because just last year, he was convicted by the Feds for defrauding the Veterans’ Affairs Department of $174,656 for his claims of combat service and some medals that he said he earned.
I guess six months wasn’t enough because Seely is back at it. This was his Facebook profile last night;
The truth is that he did do four years of active duty in the Marine Corps he left as a sergeant. He was in Vietnam from July 1966 – July 1967 and he served as an Engineer Equipment Operator. He doesn’t have a Combat Action Ribbon or any of the other awards that he claimed to have, so it’s doubtful that he ever heard a shot fired in anger.

I always thought a “Chaser” was a beer you drank after downing a shot of some kind of liquor. His 118 lists that as his last duty position on active duty. What the hell?

Thanks, Scotty – but just what the hell does a “Brig Chaser” do? I’d figured out he worked at the old Portsmouth Brig from his assignments.
I always thought they were sort of like court officers…moving people to and from the brig for whatever purposes, trials or whatever…
I wasn’t a Marine, but I have a couple of friends who were and that’s how they explained it.
I was a Brig Chaser. Perfect place to get work parties. It’s a secondary MOS.
Usually they are escorts for the detainees. They even have cross country chasers.
Really? In my day it was working duty. Went to a class and got the belt and that was it (though I remember the cross country types seemed to be more dedicated–had no idea it was an MOS.
Went to a class, got the belt & card only to use it as a way to get able bodies for work details while I was TAD to Base Special Services. It wasn’t a secondary MOS for me though.
Scotty: thanks. Don’t know if the Army has a designated MOS for that function and wasn’t aware that’s what the USMC called it. Appreciate you educating me on another bit of “Marine-speak”.

MOS description for Army 31E says the specialty does substantially more than merely escort prisoners to/from confinement. From the description, it sounds much like USMC 8131, Cor Svc Gd (which I assume is short for “Correctional Service Guard”).

From the description above, the duty position/MOS “Chaser” (USMC 8151) appears to be more limited in function than Cor Svc Gd (USMC 8131)- e.g., escort duties only. It’s also a different MOS code entirely. That’s what threw me.
I worked for the PM at Dix some years back, we had an “AWOL Apprehension Team” that would escort prisoners to and from various detention centers/brigs etc. No specific MOS, just be an MP.
I received my Chaser Card while assigned to guard duty waiting for to get picked up for class in the Stumps. Sounded pretty cool to a hard charging Private with four months of active duty. Then reality set in. Late one evening, the Company Duty NCO snagged myself and one other Marine to babysit some dirtbag that Law Enforcement turned back over to the Corps. We had to watch over this POS in one of the C&E open squad bays with no heat in the dead of winter, and all of the other dirtbags in that barracks welcomed him back as if he was Neil Diamond returning from an Apollo mission. And the other Chaser spent the evening saying that we should handcuff him to the rack, and he just happen to have a pair that he would use when putting it to his girlfriend. I guess that was in case she regained consciousness. That was my one and only experience as a chaser.

In the Navy, they used to be Shore Patrol. I don’t know what they are now. Usually, Bosun’s Mates, the do-all guys, but sometimes other rates filled in.

Yeah, you get the authority from the CO to escort the prisoner, or do errands relating to the prisoner. Did that in Okinawa a couple of times… including escorting the “detainee” to my house for Thanksgiving.

I held brig sick call at Hansen 70-71. I would occasionally escort a prisoner to the dispensary. These were those in the brig for the most minor offenses who were near the end of their incarceration, so they were the least likely to haul ass. I never had a problem with them. No way was I what would be considered a ‘chaser’, more like an escort.
We used to get chaser cards for some of our Corpsmen. They could check out prisoners to do projects at the BAS. They usually were glad to get out of there and worked hard. We fed them well and didn’t treat them like shite. They generally wanted to come back and work again.
That trailer reminds me of when three Marine boots saw me in a bar in DC. I was sporting a long-arm cast, a trach tube and a wired shoulder. All from wounds I had received. One of the boots said “Look at the Army SGT with all his pretty ribbons”. I invited all three outside, broke ones jaw with my cast, kicked the one in his jewels and the third one got behind me. They did not realize that I was fresh out of the jungle. Their DI shoulda told them to know their enemies capabilities before you attack.
I did it a few times, I had to sit throught a short class and get a chaser ( Prisoner Escort) card signed by PMO. I only dealt with Marines from my unit ( Battery) who were sentenced from a SPCM and below. Follow the sentence we had to inventory their belongs and have them take only a list of things required at the brig. Everything excess was turned into supply if it was Government issue or stored in boxes there if it was personal. For some reason, I never remember getting a vehicle to take then to the brig. It was a 30 minute walk to the Brig from the unit, and I had a “Chaser” Arm band and was armed with a 45 pistol and a whistle. The prisoner had cuffs on. I was to remain bend the prisoner at all times. When I got to the Brig I took him inside and the staff had him stand facing the wal while I gave them my chaser card and his confinement orders and ID. They then would have him inventory his belongings and if he was lacking anything they could refuse to take custody until the unit bought it over. The process seemed to take a long time, but it was probably under 45 minutes. They would give me a reciept for the prisoner and I’d walk my ass back to the OOD and turn in the reciept and turn in the 45 to the Armory, If memory serves me right Every time I did this shit was a Friday Afternoon. Every Marine I took there was a friend who simply fucked up. McNealy got a case of stupid and found a camera that didnt belong to him and put it in his locker. The only reason to not put him in prison for 20 years is so that he MAY be able to repay some of the loot. Knowing the VA, they probably have him on a $50 a month payment plan, with the option to skip three payments in any twelve-month period due to unforeseen circumstances. In his case, I hope the unforeseen circumstances would include not being able to work b/c of a boot up his ass.
It NEVER fails. The sheer amount of phony Amphibious Recon and Force Recon Bubbas is staggering….ly funny. I guess I am privileged having a Father and Godfather who were in that line of work. Makes it easy to spot the fakes though. Well, since he stole that from the gubmint, Uncle Sam has the same option with him that they have with people who decide to defer paying off their college loans. It’s called garnishing his wages (in this case) and his Social Security. If it’s paid at the rate of $148+ per month, it will only take him 28.66 years to pay it back.

More often than not, they do not get caught or prosecuted. I watched in real time the two year campaign Mary Schantag mounted to get Richard Cayton charged. Intervention by a general officer under whom Cayton had served while he was still on active duty was necessary before any official action was taken for his POW and related false claims with the VA.

Question for one of you legal types: If he is on 3 years of “supervised release” could the Judge do something since it appears he is up to his old tricks? At least contempt of the court?

Doubtful, but it depends on what entity is supervising his release. The bigger issue is that they are technically supervising him for defrauding the VA, not being a lying shitbird. That being said, there are probably “good conduct” clauses in the conditions of his supervised release that may work.
The trick would be 1) letting someone know, and 2) letting someone know who cares enough to pursue it.
Guess Old Bert has got a hankering for cockmeat sammiches and tubesteak again. Maybe someone will hook up the manhole inspector and send him back for a reunion with Bubba, Thor, Julio and Mr. “Tiny”?

Prison chaser/guard was a temporary detail in my ft. sill company that we sometimes pulled.
One guy decided to take a nap at night in the stockade barrack he was guarding.
He later got his own bunk there 8-).
