Linda Weiss; MSRB saves her from firing at VA
Until November, Linda Weiss was the director of the Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center in Albany, New York. It was that month that she was removed from that position by VA Deputy Secretary Sloan Gibson. However, according to the Albany Times-Union she won’t fired after a review by the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. Sloane says that he won’t allow her to return to a position which allows her to supervise veterans’ healthcare, though.
Gibson removed her from the position, he said Friday, because she did not take timely, appropriate action to ensure that veterans received safe medical care. Weiss did not hold her employees accountable for actions that led to inappropriate care, he said.
“In my judgment, a medical center director who fails to proactively address patient safety concerns or fails to be an advocate for vulnerable Veteran patients has no place in the VA,” Gibson said.
Gibson also did not provide details about the specific patient safety issues considered by himself or the MSPB.
The Times-Union article provides details of some of the problems that have been reported at the hospital, mostly in regards to unpunished healthcare workers, some accusations of drug abuse and other patient abuse problems that Weiss allowed to exist without criminal charges against the perpetrators.
So basically, we, the taxpayers are going to continue to pay Weiss, but she doesn’t have a job. Nice work if you can get it. Thanks MSRB.

Jeezus… nurses diverting drugs from patients, accusations of patients being given morphine for treatable conditions to “hasten their deaths”. And the POS administrator that allowed this to happen on her watch isn’t fired? Who runs the MSRB?
I would hope that the next POTUS would have the balls to do something about this… but I won’t hold my breath.
I saw Many many cases similar to this if not quite as egregious. Individuals that played the system like a fiddle and continued to collect a check. People that never had more than 10 hours of sick leave on the books because the used it like a vacation bank, one that flat refused to work certain days because of “religious” reasons. She was given an even less demanding job, a private office and an assistant. Federal Civil Service is broken, needs to be rebuild from the ground up.
Since they work with retired military I say put them under the UCMJ.

There is no excuse for this. I blame Congress for not putting an end to it long ago. They had to approve/allow this mess, and made us pay for it. Only they can stop it.

Federal Employee Unions and all the incompetence protectionism that goes with them, are very much the root bed of the problems.
Like education, federal employment has become a haven for the idiot, incompetent and malcontent, lazy and stupid due to the insane degree of protection provided by employees from cause and effect of their behavior.
This IME isn’t a case of Federal Employee as much as it is a VA Employee.
You don’t think the VA personnel are covered by one or another of the federal unions? They are federal employees.
That’s not what I said. The VA seems to have compartmentalized themselves beyond the norm.
Agree VA seems to have cornered the market on incompentence, the rare times I’ve seen solid employees get hired (esp. veterans), they quickly become disenfranchised and leave for better opportunities.
The senior management in the VA aren’t in the union.

Gross dereliction of duty is not merit, and the ones you are supposed to protect are not those guilty of dereliction.

She probably had some dirt that she threatened to toss around.
We also (as taxpayers) probably funded her defense by the VA’s Regional Counsel. Another often overlooked group of shitbags…VA Attorneys.
